This study investigated the relationships between parental marital conflict, attachment to parents and peer relationships. The mediating role of attachment to parents was also explored in the relationship between parental marital conflict and peer relationships. Two hundred eighty four 8th graders participated in this study. The participants answered questionnaires regarding parental marital conflict, attachment to parents, qualify of their friendship, and attachment to peers. The main results of the study are as follows: First, adolescents who perceived a higher level of parental marital conflict reported less positive feelings and more negative feelings toward their friends. They also reported lower peer attachment, and tended to perceive their friendship functions negative. Second, adolescents who showed stronger attachment to their parents reported more positive feelings and less negative feelings toward their friends. They reported higher peer attachment, and perceived friendship functions positively. Third, adolescents who perceived a higher level of parental marital conflict showed weaker attachment to their parents. Finally, attachment to fathers and mothers mediated the association between parental marital conflict and peer relationships. In other words, parental marital conflict had an indirect effect on peer relationships. The results suggest that attachment to fathers and mothers that resulted from parental marital conflict played an important role in determining peer relationships among adolescents, rather than the existence of the parental marital conflict itself.
Loneliness in adolescence was examined in relation to peer aggression /victimization and to parental attachment with sample of 426 eighth graders in a suburban city. The subjects rated themselves on questionnaires regarding attachment to parents, peer experiences, and loneliness. Peer aggression and victimization was also rated by peers. In both boys and girls, the more they were attached to parents, the less loneliness they experienced. The more aggression and victimization they experienced from peers, the more loneliness they experienced. Lonely adolescent girls had lower attachment to parents and higher self-rated victimization by peers.
The purpose of this research is to explore the self-concept and school life adjustment based on group classification of attachment types with parents, teachers and peer groups among 6th grade students at elementary schools. The findings suggest that attachment is highest with one's mothers, followed by peer groups, fathers and teachers. This is in accordance with the overall tendencies of children to be attached to their parents, teachers, peer groups, according to their self-concept and school life adjustment. In addition, the tendency of attachment with parents, teachers, and peer groups according to gender is not meaningful except for peer-group affection between boys and girls. Furthermore, an integrated attachment type is ranked highest, followed by parents attachment type, peer attachment type, and unstable attachment type, in order based on cluster analysis. Finally, each attachment group among students showed meaningful differences in socio-demographic variables, self-concept, and school life adjustment.
This study sought to examine the effects of child-parent attachment and its concordance with children's peer status. The subjects were 110 5-6 year old kindergarteners (48 boys & 62 girls) and they were asked to respond to the Attachment Story Completion Task by Bretherton & Cassidy (1990) and the peer rating scale by Asher, Singleton, Tinsley & Hymel (1979). Our results indicate that the secure mother-child and father-child attachment groups had higher peer status than the insecure attachment groups. The insecure-avoidant groups had the lowest peer status. Young children who were securely attached to both parents and at least one parent had higher peer status than who were found to be insecurely attached to both parents. The implications for parent education for enhancing peer relations were also discussed.
This study aimed to investigate how child neglect abuse by parents, children's intimacy with teachers and peer attachment influenced boys' and girls' psycho-social maladjustment(aggression, social withdrawal and depression). The subjects were 2,264 elementary school students(boys: 1,180, girls: 1,084) in upper grades participating in the Korea Child Youth Panel Surveys. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, correlations and hierarchical regressions. The main results of this study were as follows. Firstly, regardless of children's sex, as child abuse levels by parents are higher, so children's aggression levels are higher. Also, children's intimacy with teachers and peer attachment moderated the effects of child neglect abuse by parents on both boys' and girls' aggression. But the patters of moderating effects were differed in children's sex. Secondly, child neglect abuse by parents didn't influence boys' and girls' social withdrawal and boys' peer attachment moderated the effects of child neglect by parents on boys' social withdrawal. Finally, child abuse by parents strongly influenced boys' depression, but child neglect by parents strongly influenced girls' depression. Also, there were no moderating effects of children's intimacy with teachers and peer attachment on the relation between child abuse neglect by parents, and boys' and girls' depression.
The purpose of this study was to explore the impacts of adolescents' body images, attachment to parents, attachment to peers, and resilience on life satisfaction. The participants were 1449 adolescents selected from six junior-high schools. T-tests and stepwise multiple regression were conducted for data analysis. Major findings of this study were as follows: 1) There were gender differences in body images, peer attachment, and life satisfaction. 2) Adolescents' body images and degree of resilience were significant predictors of life satisfaction. 3) Attachment to parents was a significant predictor of life satisfaction, but peer attachment was not significant.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among control parenting, early adolescents' ego-resiliency and peer attachment. The subjects were 2,346 1st-year middle school students from all over the country. Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey(2010) data were analyzed by means of Pearson's correlation, hierarchical regression, and by the use of SPSS 19.0. The results of our study are as follows. First, parents' control parenting operated as a major determining factor with the effect that peer attachment decreased as parents' control parenting levels increased. Second, early adolescents' ego-resiliency operated as a major determining factor with the effect that peer attachment increased as adolescents' ego-resiliency levels increased. Finally, the interaction effects of parents' control parenting and early adolescents' ego-resiliency on peer attachment were observed.
The major purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parents divorce and childrens peer-attachment. For this purpose, 79 elementary school children whose parents divorced answered the questionnaire which asked about the length of period after parents divorce, present family type, and childrens peer-attachment. The results showed that boys had lower communication level and higher estrangement level than girls among children who had experienced parents divorce, that children who passed more than two years after parents divorce had lower communication level than children who passed less than two years after parents divorce, and that children from single father family had higher estrangement level than children from step parents family.
The primary purpose of this study was to explore the parent and peer attachment of both American parenting and nonparenting adolescents. Do parenting adolescents differ from nonparenting adolescents in their attachment to their parents and peers? A convenience sample of 190(81 parenting and 109 nonparenting) adolescents were recruited and participated in the current study. The short form of The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment(IPPA) developed by Armsden and Greenberg(1987) was used to measure attachment to their parents and peers. Overall, both parenting and nonparenting adolescents had more positive relationships with their peers than their mothers and only one significant difference in attachment between parenting and nonparenting adolescents were found in the present study. Parenting adolescents reported having less communication with their peers/friends than nonparenting adolescents. Implications and recommendations for future research are presented.
The purpose of this study is to examine the relations between parenting behaviors, adolescents' attachment toward parents and peers, and adolescents' self-esteem. The differences in parenting behaviors and adolescents' attachment and self-esteem as a function of parent and adolescent gender are also examined. Participants were 405 high school students (Mage = 16.3, SD = 0.71) who completed questionnaires regarding parenting behavior, parent and peer attachment, and self-esteem. Results show that girls perceived a higher maternal behavioral control and peer attachment, whereas boys perceived a higher parental psychological control. The relative contributions of peer attachment and parenting differed depending on the adolescent's gender. Peer attachment was the only variable to predict boys' self-esteem, but mothers' behavioral control is also important to predict girls' self-esteem. The results underscore the importance of parenting behaviors and adolescents' attachment toward parents and peers in predicting an adolescent's positive self-esteem.
