A Study of Parenting Characteristics of mothers experienced child care teachers ('유아교사'를 경험한 '엄마'의 양육특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was to establish a framework to provide the necessary caring knowledge in preparental period by analyzing the effects of an experience of being a child-care teacher in a field based on child-care knowledge from university. The data were collected from 5 in-depth interviews for 7 weeks from July to August, 2015. The results showed that mothers who used to be child-care teachers put conversation first in the child rearing process, made a room environment similar to the activity space in a kindergarten, and evaluated themselves as mothers with a burden that their children should be different from the others. This means that they perform child rearing in a positive way by re-creating their experience and knowing the child rearing process.

Work-Family Compatibility Experience of Married Nurse: Focusing on the Expanding Stage of the Family Life Cycle (기혼간호사의 일-가정양립경험: 가족확대기 간호사를 중심으로)

  • This study examined the work-family compatibility experience of married nurses. The participants of this research were 7 registered nurses who are on the expanding stage of their family life cycle. Data were collected by individual in-depth interviews from June 10 to November 30, 2015 and analyzed using phenomenological methodology by Colaizzi (1978). The results showed that the work-family compatibility experience of married nurses may be categorized into 4 categories, 'the reality of work and parenting', 'external and internal conflicts about the compatibility of work and parenting', 'compromise with reality for solving the difficulty of compatibility', 'growing desire and efforts for compatibility', and may be identified with 12 theme clusters and 29 themes. The worthiness as a professional woman and happiness in child rearing are the driving force of the compatibility of work and family in married nurses. Therefore, the continued support of government policies and family is important for married nurses to maintain work and family balance.

The Influence of Value of Children, Marital Intimacy, Perception of Childbirth, Co-parenting on Parental Satisfaction in Women with a Child (한 자녀를 둔 어머니의 자녀가치와 부부친밀감, 분만경험지각, 부부공동양육이 부모역할만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • South Korea's total fertility rate dropped to 1.2 in 2014, which was far below the population replacement level of 2.07. Parental satisfaction of mothers contribute to secondary childbirth intention as well as child outcome. This study was to identify the factors affecting parental satisfaction particularly in mothers with one child. The survey conducted in five daycare centers in B city from September to October in 2015. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analyses using SPSS/Win 21 software. 42.7% of variance in parental satisfaction was accounted for by co-parenting(t=5.566, p<.001), value of children(t=3.575, p=.001), and perception of childbirth(t=2.906, p=.005). The explain power was significant(F=21.581, p<.001). This study revealed that the perception of childbirth last long enough to affect mothers of children up to the age of 6. Midwifes and nurses working with laboring women should try to give them positive experience of delivery.

Maternal Overprotection and Young Children's Interactions with Peers During Play: The Mediating Roles of Social Immaturity and Withdrawal of Children (어머니의 과보호와 유아의 놀이 중 또래상호작용: 사회적 미성숙과 위축의 매개역할을 중심으로)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the pathway from mothers' overprotective parenting to their child's peer play interactions mediated by internalizing problems, that is, social immaturity and withdrawal. Methods: Surveys were conducted on mothers and teachers of 341 children aged three to five. SPSS 22.0 was used to analyze the data using descriptive statistics. Structural modeling analysis was also implemented to test theoretical model using AMOS 21.0. Results: Maternal overprotective parenting, which increased social immaturity of their child, indirectly reduced the child's positive interactions with peers during play. Mothers' overprotection led to a higher level of withdrawal of their child while the effect of children's withdrawal on their peer play interaction was not significant. Because overactive parenting of mothers had no direct effect on peer play interaction, the complete mediation model representing a path from maternal overprotection to children's peer play interaction via their internalizing problems was partially supported. Conclusion/Implications: This study shows that overprotective mothers hinder their child to experience confident and mature manners, and eventually lead their child to be socially unskillful and incompetent. It was suggested to explore more individual characteristics of mothers and children to help overprotective mothers to take a step back.

The Effect of Parental Experience: Evidence from Birth Month Based on Birth Order (부모 경험 효과: 출생순위에 따른 출생월 분석)

  • When parental experience improves parenting skills, parents are likely to behave in favor of children of higher birth orders. To examine this hypothesis, this study analyzes birth month based on birth order of children in South Korea where parents prefer to have babies in the earlier months of a year. This study finds that while more babies are born in the earlier months, second-born children are more likely to be so than first children. This implies that parental experience makes for better parents.

Intergenerational Transmission of Parental Disciplinary Practices (부모 훈육방법의 세대간 전이)

  • The present study investigated the notion that supportive and harsh parenting might be transmitted across generations. Data for this study were collected from a sample of 421 two-parent families, each of which included a kindergartener. The analyses were conducted separately for the group of fathers and the group of mothers. Descriptive analysis, cronbach's $\alpha$, correlations, and t-tests were used to examine research questions. The findings indicated that 1. There was a difference between fathers and mothers in relation to disciplinary experience in childhood. Mothers perceived their disciplinary experience in childhood more supportive than did fathers. 2. Parents'supportive disciplinary experience in childhood was negatively related to the overreactivity and verbosity of current parental disciplinary practices. 3. Parents'harsh disciplinary experience in childhood was positively related to ineffective parental disciplinary practices at present 4. Fathers who perceived their disciplinary experience in childhood as more supportive exhibited less overreactive and less verbose disciplinary practices while fathers who perceived their disciplinary experience in childhood as more harsh exhibited more overreactive disciplinary practices at present. 5. Mothers who perceived their disciplinary experience in childhood as more supportive exhibited less verbose disciplinary practices while mothers who perceived their disciplinary experience in childhood as more harsh exhibited more ineffective disciplinary practices(including more overreactivity) at present.

Infant Day-Care and Family Factors on Maternal Behavior (영아보육 및 가족변인이 어머니의 앙육행동에 미치는 영향)

  • Multiple features of infant day-care are explored, including age of entry, quantity, quality and stability of day-care. And relative contribution of day-care and family factors on maternal behaviors are examined. Data were gathered from 299 mothers who have infants aged under 36 months using self-report questionnaires. Results show that more than 40% infants enter day-care before 6 months of their life and about 85% of infants have far more than 30 hours of care a week. Half of the infants experience different day-care arrangements more than once. Compared to the other types of day-care, frequency of day-care arrangement change and quality of care are highest in private child-care centers. A series of Hierarchical regression results reveal that quality of day care is negatively related to mothers' control behavior whereas positively related to mothers' responsive behavior. But in general, family and child characteristics play a greater role in mothers' parenting behaviors than infant day-care characteristics.

A Comparison of Two Types of Commuting Family′s Child-rearing (맞벌이 주말부부와 홀벌이 주말부부의 자녀양육에 관한 연구)

  • Due to the changes of modern society, alternative types of nuclear family so called as commuting family have appeared. Also, with the increase of women's economic participation and their needs of self-actualization, dual-career commuting family have increased. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is any difference between the traditional commuting family and dual-career commuting family in terms of family relation, types of child-care and social support. Also, this study qualitatively analysed parenting-guilty of the mothers of commuting family. One eight seven mothers of three to eight year-old participated the survey. The main results were as follows : (1) In case of traditional commuting family, children cohabit with the mother and usually fathers move between two houses. But among the dual-career commuting family, there are some children who cohabit with the father and some mothers who move. Dual-career commuting family relied on the more types of child-care than traditional commuting family. (2) While traditional commuting family get more support for child-rearing from the husband's family of origin than dual-career commuting family, wife's family of origin provide more support to the dual-career commuting family. The more support the husband's family of origin provide, the more stress both types of commuting family experience. However, there was no significant relationship between the support from the wife's family of origin or friends and the stress of the mothers of both types of commuting family. (3) Mothers of two types of commuting families were different regarding the motives of parenting-guilty Difficulty of caring the children for their job as well as father-absentness makes mothers of dual-career commuting family feel parenting-guilty more.

Structural Model Analysis of Individual and Environmental Factors of Korean Language Ability of Multicultural Children

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and verify the effects of multicultural children's psychosocial adaptation, bicultural experience, parental support and parenting attitudes, and school activities on the development of Korean language ability using data from the second stage of the MAPS(Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study) using a structural equation model. The subjects of this study were 396 children from foreign families and mid-immigrant families, multicultural children who were enrolled in the fourth grade of elementary school in 2019. As a result of the study, it was found that psychosocial adaptation, bicultural experience, and school activities directly or indirectly significantly affect the ability of multicultural children to speak and understand Korean. In particular, it was found that school activities have a direct effect on the improvement of the Korean language ability of multicultural children, so it was understood that the support of friends and teachers should be treated as very important parts of educational activities in the educational field. These results mean that the most ideal educational environment that affects the development of Korean language skills must be necessarily reflected in the Korean language education policy for multicultural children.

A Qualitative Study of the Parenting Experience of Adolescents (청소년기 자녀 어머니의 양육경험에 대한 질적 연구)

  • This study was conducted to explore parenting experiences for mothers of adolescent children. Participants in the study were 7 primary caregivers of children in the first to third grades of middle school in the Seoul area, and in-depth interviews were conducted from September to November 2019. After recording the interviews of each participant, the transcripts of verbal words and documents that were the summary of the interview were collected as data. In this study, the participants' perceptions of experiences and actions were analyzed by Smith & Osborn (2003)'s interpretative phenomenological method, which allows researchers to make meanings. As a result of data analysis, 6 major topics and 25 sub-themes were derived. The results derived from the parenting experiences of mothers of adolescents are largely six types: the implications of spending time with their children, unnatural act, the aesthetics of expression, the way to recharge energy, the mental heritage that they want to leave for their children, and resilience. The research results of this study can be presented so that they can learn the healthy responses and interaction of care-givers in a preventive educational dimension, as it provides both generality and specificity of how mothers should interact with their adolescent children in the field of clinical practice.
