Objective: This study pays attention to types of parental depression and differences in happiness and self-esteem of children in each group of parents. Methods: This study employed the 10th wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children. Cluster analysis, covariance analysis, and Bonferroni verification were performed on the data of 1,282 parents with 9-year-old children. Results: A total of four parental depression groups were categorized: 'both depressed,' 'mother depressed,' 'father depressed,' and 'not depressed.' Children of the not depressed group showed the highest psychological well-being among the four groups. Children of the mother mildly depressed group had lower scores in happiness and self-esteem than those of the father mildly depressed group. Conclusion/Implications: This study was a new attempt to categorize parental depression together, breaking away from individual approaches such as mother's depression, father's depression, and mother's and father's depression and complementary approaches between couples. When examining the impact of parental depression on children's psychological well-being, it is necessary to consider depression of the father and mother as a unit.
This study is about the influences of the type of after school care and the degree of mothers' affection and monitoring toward their children on the psychological well being of children with working mother. For this research 437 children attending an elementary school with working parent were chosen. The major finding were as follows: First, the results of the findings on whether there were differences in the psychological well being of these children depending on the form of after school care showed that there were significant differences between loneliness and self-perceives competence felt by children. Second, the results of the findings on whether there were differences in the psychological well being of these children depending on the mother's affection and monitoring showed that there were significant differences between loneliness and self-perceives competence felt by children. Third, Multiple regression analysis shows, no matter what type of care a child gets, a mother's affection is the most effective variable which influence toward a child's psychological well being.
Even though gratitude is considered as an important virtue to possess for successful adulthood, little is known about what cultivates gratitude and its benefits associated with psychological well-being among adolescents. By examining gratitude as a daily mood, this study asked (1) whether adolescents' daily grateful mood varied as a function of daily parental emotional support and (2) whether adolescents' psychological well-being varied as a function of daily grateful mood within person across seven days. The sample consisted of 70 adolescents in 8th grade recruited from a public middle school. Participants completed daily diary checklists online each evening for seven days. On days when adolescents perceived greater parental emotional support from mother or father than they typically did during the week, they rated their grateful mood to be higher than other days. With more emotional support from father, adolescents reported more grateful mood not only on that day, but also the following day. While this result highlights the important role that parents play in adolescents' experience of grateful mood, emotionally supportive behaviors of fathers appear particularly promising for cultivating gratitude. Further, daily grateful mood on a given day accounted for the significant variance in adolescents' psychological well-being not only on the same day, but also the following day. Research and practical implications of the results are discussed.
The purpose of this study was to identify: (a) the latent profiles of the difficulties associated with the schoolto-work transition (decline in confidence, mood swings, family disagreements, the burdens of familial expectations, economic hardship, and a lack of support) made by university students, (b) predictors (gender, age, grade, university location, co-residence with parents on weekdays, monthly household income, and parental educational attainment) of these profiles, and (c) how the profiles were associated with mental wellbeing. The participants of this study were 311 senior or above students (164 males and 147 females) under the age of 29, who were unmarried and preparing for employment. The findings of this study were as follows. First, the latent profile analysis revealed three distinct profiles: the "low overall difficulties" type (25.4%), the "moderate overall difficulties" type (49.9%), and the "high overall difficulties" type (24.7%). Second, the factors that predicted each profile included gender, age, co-residence with parents on weekdays, monthly household income, and parental educational attainment. Third, the "low overall difficulties" type demonstrated the highest level of mental well-being (emotional, social, and psychological well-being). This study was significant for examining the latent profiles of the difficulties associated with the school-to-work transition made by university students preparing for employment, while also exploring their mental well-being. Based on the results of this study, practical implications, limitations, and suggestions for further study were discussed.
This study is intended to improve parental capacity from the viewpoint of children's happiness. It extracts a core parental capacity for children's happiness from the international index such as OECD well-being, UNICEF Children's welfare, International survey of children's well-being, and Korean children's key index. Based on the extracted core parental capacity, this study developed a self-checklist aiming to perceive parents' capacity status and suggest a political plan in order to improve parents' capacity for children's happiness. The self-checklist has a total of 66 questions and is composed of 7 domains; Child development, Health and Safety, Family relation, Physical and material environment, Play, Guidance in life, and Community engagement. The results from the survey are as follows. The domains of Development of children as well as Health & Safety are reported as the highest value at 4.1 point; on the contrary, those of Guidance in life and Community engagement are reported as the lowest value at 3.8 point. In terms of age, it was reported that the capacity of parents under 35 years-old was better than that of parents over 35 years of age. As for family income, it was revealed that the order of parents' capacity generally depends on the family income.
This study was conducted to identify adults' knowledge, dietary behavior related to sodium, and attitude towards. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the quality of multiple roles and psychological well-being upon parenting behavior among employed mothers. The subjects were 172 employed mothers living in Seoul, Korea. The results are as follows. First, the quality of parental role was related to all of subscales of parenting behaviors of employed mothers. Second, employed mothers' higher autonomy was significantly associated with greater intimacy and reasoning guidance in their parenting. Third, employed mothers with greater positive relationship and autonomy were more likely to exhibit limit setting. Finally, higher level of environmental mastery and autonomy was related to greater parental involvement. Mothers' psychological well being was not significantly related to mothers' responsiveness.
This study investigated the effect of parental attachment on interpersonal competence and psychological well-being of college students. 625 college students completed self-administered questionnaires. Reliability test, ANOVA, Duncan ex-post analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis on data were used. Study results showed that parental attachement and interpersonal competence had significant effects on college students' psychological well-being. Results also depicted gender differences in the relationship of study variables; students' interpersonal competence demonstrated partial mediation effect in the relation of attachment with the same-sex parent and psychological well-being, while complete mediation effect in that of attachment with the opposite-sex parent and psychological well-being, These findings suggest that gender-conscious university policies to promote interpersonal competence among students are greatly needed to ensure psychological well-being of the student population.
This study examined the effects of parental psychological control, dysfunctional perfectionism, and self-conscious emotions on depression in adolescents. The sample consisted of 471 adolescents (212 boys, 259 girls) attending high schools in Seoul. The results from Structural Equation Modeling indicated that dysfunctional perfectionism and self-conscious emotions mediated the impact of parental psychological control on depression only in the mother-daughter relationship, such that with mothers' greater psychological control, girls experienced higher levels of dysfunctional perfectionism and self-conscious emotions, and reported higher depression scores. Similarly, dysfunctional perfectionism functioned as a mediator in the association between parental psychological control and adolescent depression. This tends to support findings from previous studies emphasizing the importance of same sex parent-adolescent relationships. Dysfunctional perfectionism also had the largest direct effect of all variables analyzed on depression. Parental psychological control did not show statistically significant effects on self-conscious emotions for either boys or girls. These findings suggest that interventions designed to promote adolescents' mental well-being should focus on parenting of the same sex parent as well as adolescent cognitive characteristics.
Purpose: Infant regurgitation is associated with other functional gastrointestinal disorders and signs and symptoms that have a major impact on the quality of life of infants and their families. This study evaluated the safety, tolerance, and real-world effectiveness of an anti-regurgitation formula containing locust bean gum (LBG), prebiotics, and postbiotics to alleviate digestive symptoms beyond regurgitation. Methods: This 3-month study involved infants with regurgitation requiring the prescription of an anti-regurgitation formula according to usual clinical practice. Outcomes included evaluation of the evolution of stool consistency and frequency; occurrence of colic, constipation, and diarrhea; and assessment of regurgitation severity. Infant crying, parental assessment of infant well-being, and parental satisfaction with the stool consistency were also evaluated. Results: In total, 190 infants (average age: 1.9±1.1 months) were included. After three months, stool frequency and consistency remained within the normal physiological range, with 82.7% of infants passing one or two stools per day and 90.4% passing loose or formed stools. There was no significant increase in the number of infants with diarrhea, whereas a decrease was observed in the number of infants with constipation after 1 month (p=0.001) and with colic after both 1 and 3 months (p<0.001). Regurgitation severity and crying decreased and parental satisfaction with stool consistency, formula acceptability, infant well-being, and sleep quality increased. Monitoring of adverse events did not reveal any safety concerns. Conclusion: Formulas containing LBG, prebiotics, and postbiotics were well tolerated and provided an effective strategy for managing infant regurgitation and gastrointestinal discomfort.
This study examined the relationship between parent-child relationship experiences in childhood and adulthood, and individual development and psychological well-being in mid to later life using structural equation modeling with data from 1,882 parents who have at least one child over 18 years old. Findings indicated that receiving more affectionate parenting in childhood was associated with greater generativity development, more positive parental experiences with one's own children, and better psychological well-being in mid to later adulthood. In addition, the effects of received parenting in childhood on psychological well-being after midlife were partially mediated by parental experiences with adult children and generativity development. These findings suggest that early experiences with parents in childhood continuously influence psychological well-being in adulthood through their impact on concurrent family experiences. However, early influences can be redirected through adult experiences too. These findings have implications for the development of intervention programs aimed at promoting volunteer work for older adults, as well as for practitioners who work with families and individuals who are having problems.
