  • Objectives : Isolated cleft lip with or without cleft palate(CL/P) is among the most common human birth defects, with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 700 live births. The B-Cell Leukemia/lymphoma 3(BCL3) gene has been suggested as a candidate gene for CL/P based on association and linkage studies in some populations. This study tests for an association between markers in BCL3 and isolated, non-syndromic CL/P using a case-parent trio design, while considering parent-of-origin effects. Methods : Forty case-parent trios were genotyped for two single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) in the BCL3 gene. We performed a transmission disequilibrium test(TDT) on individual SNPs, and the FAMHAP package was used to estimate haplotype frequencies and to test for excess transmission of multi-SNP haplotypes. Results : The odds ratio for transmission of the minor allele, OR(transmission), was significant for SNP rs8100239(OR=3.50, p=0.004) and rs2965169(OR=2.08, p=0.027) when parent-of-origin was not considered. Parentspecific TDT revealed that SNP rs8100239 showed excess maternal transmission. Analysis of haplotypes of rs2965169 and rs8100239 also suggested excess maternal transmission. Conclusions : BCL3 appears to influence risk of CL/P through a parent-of-origin effect with excess maternal transmission.

  • This study investigated the effects of Korean parents' family-of-origin experiences, marital conflict, open or dysfunctional communication with their children, children's coping behaviors on their behavior problems as a function of a child's sex. Theoretical models for both sexes were constructed based on the results. Two hundred and nine boys and one hundred and ninety six girls of 4th and 5th grades from two elementary schools filled out the questionnaires to assess their communication with the parents, their problem-focused coping behaviors, and their internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Four hundred five parents of these children answered the questionnaires to assess differentiation for the family-of-origin and the marital conflict. The results were as follows. Boys' path pattern showed that the fathers' differentiation from the family-of-origin effected their sons' internalizing and externalizing behavior problems through parent-child dysfunctional communication. Girls' path exhibited two different patterns. One is that the mothers' differentiation from the family-of-origin effected their daughters' internalizing and externalizing behavior problems through parent-child dysfunctional communication. Another one is that the mothers' differentiation from the family-of-origin influenced children's internalizing behavior problems through daughters' problem-focused coping behaviors as well as parent-child dysfunctional communication.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of family-of-origin experiences(parents' marital adjustment and affectionate relationship with parents) and self-differentiation on the nuclear family relationships(marital adjustment of married men women, and affectionate relationship with child). Data were collected using self-administered questionnaire method with 159 married men and 193 married women. The results showed that first, married men and women perceived the level of family-of-origin experiences lower than that of nuclear family relationships, and there were significant differences in the level of marital adjustment across sex, age, marital status, and income. Second, there was significant positive correlation between family-of-origin experiences and self-differentiation, between family-of-origin experiences and the nuclear family relationships, and between self-differentiation and the nuclear family relationships. Third, multiple regression analyses indicated that parents' marital adjustment and emotional cutoff were the powerful predictors of marital adjustment of married men women. Finally, women's affectionate relationship with child was predicted by such variables as affectionate relationship with parents, fusion with others, and emotional fusion, whereas men's affectionate relationship with child was predicted by such variables as affectionate relationship with parents, emotional reactivity, and I-position.

  • A least squares regression interval mapping model was derived to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) with a unique mode of genomic imprinting, polar overdominance (POD), under a breed cross design model in outbred mammals. Tests to differentiate POD QTL from Mendelian, paternal or maternal expression QTL were also developed. To evaluate the power of the POD models and to determine the ability to differentiate POD from non-POD QTL, phenotypic data, marker data and a biallelic QTL were simulated on 512 F2 offspring. When tests for Mendelian versus parent-of-origin expression were performed, most POD QTL were classified as partially imprinted QTL. The application of the series of POD tests showed that more than 90% and 80% of medium and small POD QTL were declared as POD type. However, when breed-origin alleles were segregating in the grand parental breeds, the proportion of declared POD QTL decreased, which was more pronounced in a mating design with a small number of parents ($F_0$ and $F_1$). Non-POD QTL, i.e. with Mendelian or parent-of-origin expression (complete imprinting) inheritance, were well classified (>90%) as non-POD QTL, except for QTL with small effects and paternal or maternal expression in the design with a small number of parents, for which spurious POD QTL were declared.

  • Objective: The study examined the mediated-moderation effect of social-support levels from maternal-acceptance experiences by the parents of origin to child emotion regulation strategies through an emotion-coaching reaction. Methods: The participants in this study were children (Grades 4-6) and their mothers. They completed questionnaires on Maternal Parenting Experiences Scale, Children's Emotion Regulation Scale, Emotion-Coaching Scale, and Social Supportive Level Scale. Data were analyzed via SEM. Results: The main findings were as follows. First, a mediating model showed that the relationship between maternal-acceptance experiences by the parents of origin and child emotion-regulation strategies was mediated by emotion-coaching reactions. Second, there was a moderation effect of social-supportive levels on the relationship between maternal-acceptance experiences from parents of origin and emotion-coaching reaction. Finally, social-supportive levels mediated the moderation effect of social-support level from maternal-acceptance experiences to child emotion-regulation strategies through emotion-coaching reaction. Conclusion: These results indicate that importance of maternal social-supportive level from owns spouse or friends. I discussed the implications of the intervention of parent counseling and parent education in this research.

  • This study examined the experience of family of origin among those who decided consensual divorce. Questionnaires regarding family relationships, alcohol problem, domestic violence, and health in family or origin were distributed to 500 people who visited Busan Family court for filing divorce and 3% questionnaires were collected by the staff of the Family court in April, 2004. As for analyzing the data, using SPSS/WIN 10.0 program, t-test and ANOVA were conducted. The results of analyses are as follows. First, more respondents tended to report that theirs parents' marital relationship was bad in their childhood than parent-child relationship. Second, 41% of all respondents reported that their parents have had alcohol problems, and 32% reported that there had been domestic violence between their parents. Third, the overall score of health in family of origin was lower than the medium score, which implies the lower health in family of origin among the divorce deciders. Lastly, there were some differences in experiences of family of origin in terms of some demographic variables such as gender, education, and religion. Women tended to perceived their family relationship more positively than men did. Also, highly educated group of divorce deciders reported lower parental alcohol problem and higher health in family of origin than the group of lower education. Respondents which had specific religions reported that their parents have had less alcohol problems, and higher health in family-of-origin.

  • This study was conducted to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting meat quality in an $F_2$ reference population of Korean native pig and Landrace crossbreds. The three-generation mapping population was generated with 411 progeny from 38 $F_2$ full-sib families, and 133 genetic markers were used to produce a sex-average map of the 17 autosomes. The data set was analyzed using least squares Mendelian and parent-of-origin interval-mapping models. Lack-of-fit tests between models were used to characterize the QTL for mode of gene expressions. A total of 10 (32) QTL were detected at the 5% genome (chromosome)-wise level for the analyzed traits. Of the 42 QTL detected, 13 QTL were classified as Mendelian, 10 as paternal, 14 as maternal, and 5 as partial expressed QTL, respectively. Among the QTL detected at 5% genome-wise level, four QTL had Mendelian mode of inheritance on SSCs 5, 10, 12, and 13 for cooking loss, drip loss, crude lipid and crude protein, respectively; two QTL maternal inheritance for pH at 24-h and shear force on SSC11; three QTL paternal inheritance for CIE b and Hunter b on SSC9 and for cooking loss on SSC15; and one QTL partial expression for crude ash on SSC13, respectively. Most of the Mendelian QTL (9 of 13) had a dominant mode of gene action, suggesting potential utilization of heterosis for genetic improvement of meat quality within the cross population via marker-assisted selection.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the family of origin variables on marital conflict. Seventy five married couples living together for less than 10 years were chosen from Seoul and Suwon cities. These subjects completed Korean Version of Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale Ⅱ, Individual Separation Scale, Family Rules Scale, Korea Certificated Egogram, and Marital Conflict Scale. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired-t test, and hierarchical regressions. The results were as follows: First, husbands and wives were different from each other in triangulation, family rules from family of origin and marital conflict. While husbands felt more strongly about their family rules than wives, wives perceived triangulation, and marital conflict higher than husbands. Second, husbands' controlling ego state, individuation, and family rules explained sixteen percents of husbands' marital conflict. Statistically speaking husbands' controlling ego state positively influenced on husbands' marital conflict. However, both of husbands' and wives' controlling ego states explained twelve percents of wives' marital conflict, and husbands' controlling ego state was statistically significant.

  • We report a patient with a ruptured vertebral artery (VA) dissecting aneurysm that was treated by internal trapping of the aneurysm and parent artery using detachable coils with subsequent antegrade recanalization of occluded vertebral artery during the follow-up period. A 38-year-old man was admitted with a ruptured right VA dissecting aneurysm just distal to origin of right posterior inferior cerebellar artery. The dissected segment of the VA was occluded by coil embolization. The 14 months follow-up angiography showed that dissected aneurysm was completely occluded, but the parent artery was recanalized in an antegrade fashion. Based on this unique case, the authors suggest that careful angiographic follow-up of dissecting aneurysm is required, even in patients successfully treated with endovascular occlusion of the affected artery and aneurysm.
