Feeding trials were conducted for a test of the optimum dietary protein levels for the fingerling Korean catfish, Parasilurus asotus. The growth response was examined in terms of weight gain, feed coefficient. protein efficiency ratio and net protein utilization for 8 weeks at $23\~27^{\circ}C$. Within a range of 25 to 55\%$ crude protein levels in the diet, the body weight increased while the dietary protein level increased. Accumulation of protein in the body reached the maximum when the crude protein level in the diet was at $45\%$. These results indicate that the optimum dietary protein level of fingerling Korean catfish was about $45\%$ when anchovy meal was used as the protein source.
Monogeneans(Phylum Platyhelminthes) have been known as common parasites onto the skin and gills of cultured freshwater fishes. Infestation with these parasites result in a great loss in aquaculture industry. Some classification studies on these parasites have mostly been conducted in Japan but rarely in Korea. For the purpose of classifying monogenean parasites infesting two Korean freshwater fishes, eel (Anguilla japonica) and catfish(Parasilurus asotus), samples captured from March 1998 to April 2000 were examined. Here we report for the first time in Korea that four different species of monogeneans are identified: Pseudodactylogyrus bini and P. anguillae in eels; Ancylodiscoides infundibulovagina and Ancylodiscoides sp. in catfish.

This study was conducted to collect the information on the behavioral characteristics and the habitat environment of mandarin fish (Siniperca schezeri) and catfish (Parasilurus asitus) with acoustic telemetry method in Chungju Lake, Korea. Mandarin fish tended to stay within 1km from the release points in downstream, and had a strong diurnal behavior. They approached to the lakefront at night. They also preferred to stay at deep water off the lakefront. The average swimming speed was faster at night (0.4BL/s) than during a day (0.2BL/s). They swam the shallow water area at night. Catfish frequently moved between upstream and downstream. Catfish tended to act during a day. The average swimming speed was faster during a day (0.3BL/s) than at night (0.2 BL/s). The average swimming depth was 14.3m, and they tended to float about 4m during a day.
The plasma proteins of fresh water fishes have been fractionated by disc electrophoresis in acrylamide gels utilized as an electrophoretic supporting medium. The species of fishes examined in this experiment were Anguilla japonica, Misgurnus mizolepis, Parasilurus asotus, Siniperca scherzeri, Pelteobagrus fulvidra, Carassius carassius, Cyprinus carpio, and Hemibarbus labeo, obtained in the Han River. Disc electrophoresis was performed as described by Ornstein and Davis. Gels and buffer solution were prepared by the method developed by W.J.Kim. The separation gels were 7% acrylamide gel. The fractionation of plasma proteins showed 13 bands in Anguilla japonica, 10 in Misgurnus mizolepis, 15 in Parasilurus asotus, 12 in Siniperca scherzeri, 11 in Pelteobagrus fulvidra, 13 in Carassius carassius, 9 in Cyprinus carpio, and 13 in Hemibarbus labeo. The patterns of plasma protein on the each species of fishes were different in the number of bands, ratio of contents, relative mobilities, and forms of fractionation.
This study was performed to investigate the contamination level of heavy metals in freshwater flshes. The samples of 92 cases were collected at 7 areas located on HanRiver from November to December in 1980. Contents of heavy metals: cadmium, lead, copper, chromium and zinc were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results were as follows: 1. Generally mean value of the heavy metal contents of fishes collected on lower parts of Han River were higher than those of upper parts. 2. In the cadmium contents, the highest value was $20.52{\pm}5.10$ ppb in Carassius auratus, and the values at Hannam and Noryangjin area were higher than those at other parts on Han River. 3. In the lead contents, the highest was $0.29{\pm}0.03ppm$ in Carassius auratus and that in Parasilurus asotus was the lowest $0.12{\pm}0.02ppm$ Mean contents of lead in the samples of Hannam and Haengjue area were higher than those of other area 4. In the copper contents, the highest value was $3.13{\pm}0.34ppm$ in Carassius auratus and the contents of fishes of Haengjue area was higher than those of any other area. It was significant among the species, but not among the collecting areas in copper contents. 5. In the chromium contents, the highest was $1.16{\pm}0.12ppm$ in Carassius auratus and that in Parasilurus asotus was the lowest $0.21{\pm}0.01ppm$ The contents of samples of Hannam and Noryangjin area were also higher than those of other area. 6. In the zinc contents, that in Arassius auratus was the highest value with $14.06{\pm}1.13ppm$ and that in Parasilurus asotus was the lowest $4.79{\pm}0.53ppm$. On the other hand, it was significant among the species and collecting areas. 7. Accumulation of heavy metals in freshwater fishes is tended to increase with growth.
The effect of copper ion on the lactate dehydrogenase isozyme patterns in the heart, liver, kidney, skeletal muscle, and ovary of catfish, Parasilurus asotus, was studied by cellulose acetate gel electrophoresis. 1. The LDH-1 and LDH-2 of heart type appeared in the heart muscle of control fish. When the fish were exposed to copper ion, however, the LDH-1, LDH-2, LDH-3, and LDH-4 appeared. The amount of LDH-1 was decreased and those of LDH-2, LDH-3, and LDH-4 were increased. 2. There was one band of LDH-4 in the liver of normal fish. But the amount of LDH-4 was decreased and additional new LDH-5 appeared by exposure to copper ion. 3. There were LDH-1, LDH-2, and LDH-4 in the kidney tissue of both control and experimental groups. The LDH-1 was increased, whereas LDH-2 and LDH-4 were decreased after exposure to copper ion. 4. There was broad band of LDH-5 in the skeletal muscle of the control fish. However, the LDH-4 and LDH-5 with M sub-band appeared by the exposure to copper ion. 5. There was LDH-3 band only in the ovary of control, wheras all five LDH isozymes appeared in the ovary of the fish exposed to copper iion. 6. During the period of exposure to copper ion, the LDH isozyme of heart type which associated with aerobic metabolism was decreased, but the LDH isozyme of muscle type of anaerobic metabolism was increased in most of heart, liver, and skeletal muscle. It seems that these organs are related to some of important functions for anaerobic metabolism during the copper poisoning period.

In order to find out the effect of supplemented diets with squid intestine on the catfish, growth and body compositions of catfish (Parasilurus asotus) were investigated for 112 days with the four experimental diets of different lipid levels. The higher lipid level of diets with squid intestine supplement was fed, the higher body weight was gained (p<0.05). HSI (Hepatosomatic Index) was the lowest in the diets with $10\%$ squid intestine. There were no significant differences in muscle md skin compositions, however the increasing lipid levels in the diets well reflected in the fatty acid pattern of skin and muscle. The percentage of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids such as C20 : 5 and C22 : 6 in tissues was increased according to increase of supplemented squid intestine. Saturated and n-6 fatty acid contents did not show the significant difference.
To investigate the species and infection rate of Tripartiella sp in three species of freshwater fish, carp(Cyprinus carpio), goldfish(Crassius auratus) and Korean catfish(Parasilurus asotus), fish cultured in the fish farms next to Yosu and in the western area of Chunbuk province in Korea was examined from April to June, 1996. The infection rate was evaluated after observing the gill and mucous from 130 fish under the microscope. The species of Tripartiella was identified on the basis of the shape and number of denticle according to methods of Bychowsky(1985) after staining the parasites with 2% methyene blue solution. All the detected-parasite was classified as Tripartiella differed from Trichodina reported previously in our country. T carassii, T californica, T rhombi from Goldfish, T rhombi from common carp, T californica from Israeli carp and T bychowsky from Korean catfish were observed. In the fish from the fish farms in the western area of Chunbuk province, the infection rate of Tripartiella sp was ranged from 6.7% to 100%, but in neither carp nor goldfish from the farms next to Yosu the parasite detected.
This study was carried out to clarify the neuronal organization in pineal body of catfish. The pineal body was observed by acetylcholinesterase histochemistry and electron microscopy. The neuronal types observed in the pineal body of catfish were bipolar and multipolar cells. Multipolar cells were found throughout the pineal end vesicle and whole stalk, but bipolar cells only in the end vesicle and distal stalk. The pineal tract was formed by the long axons of these neurons. The neuronal clusters(pineal ganglia) were also observed in the end vesicle. In summary, the type of neurons in catfish pineal was different from that of other species, and the neuronal distribution differed depending on the region of pineal body. These results reflect the interspecific and regional differences of the pineal organization of fishes.
This study was designed to elucidate the lipid and its fatty acid composition in various tissues of cat fish, Parasilurus asotus. The free lipid contents in meat, skin and viscera were 5.62%, 26.34% and 19.27%, whereas the bound lipid contents in those tissues were 2.34%, 2.30% and 19.27%, respectively. The neutral lipid contents in free lipid were 5 times higher than those in bound lipid, while the phospholipid contents in bound lipid were 4 times higher than those in free lipid. The neutral lipid was mainly composed of triglyceride (79.84%-99.86%) in free lipid, and esterified sterol & hydrocarbon (55.12-64.33%) in bound lipid. The phospholipid was mainly composed of phosphatidyl choline (52.38-69.98%) and phosphatidyl ethanolamine (24.09-40.48%) in free lipid, and phosphatidyl choline (53.03-58.54%) and phosphatidyl ethamolamine (13.80-19.23%) in bound lipid. The major fatty acids of polar lipid in free and bound lipids were C16:0 (28.37%, 21.99%), C18:1 (12.01%, 11.52%), C18:2 (17.93%, 14.12%) and C22:6 (17.22%, 20.63%), and those of nonpolar lipid in free and bound lipids were C16:0 (14.81%, 18.94%), C18: 1 (25.93%, 10.89%) and C22:6 (9.95%,23.44%), respectively. The total essential fatty acid (TEFA) content in skin was slightly higher than that in meat. In both polar and nonpolar lipids in meat ${\omega}3-HUFA$ contents of polar lipid were 1.5-2.0 times higher than nonpolar lipid and also ${\omega}3-HUFA$ content of bound lipid was slightly higher than that of free lipid. There were significant differences in the lipid classification and its fatty acid composition between free and bound lipids and/or in various tissues.
