This paper presents the modeling, theoretical formulation, and stability analysis for a combined system of a spinning disc and a head that contacts the disc. In the analytic model, head interference is considered by a rotating mass-spring-damper system together with a frictional follower force on the damped annular discs. The multiple scale method is utilized to perform the stability system that shows the existence of instability associated with parametric resonances. Using the formulated system , instability regions of optical recording disc are investigated with variation of mass, stiffness and friction force of a head, respectively. The simulation results show that the stiffness of a head is the most sensitive parameter on the instability of the disc.
A transient finite element simulation is developed for the two-dimensional thermoelastic contact problem of a stationary functionally graded material between sliding layers, with frictional heat generation. Thermoelastic instability in functionally graded materials is investigated. The critical speed of functionally graded material coating disk is larger than that of the conventional steel disk. The effect of the nonhomogeneity parameter in functionally graded material is also investigated. The results show that functionally gradient materials restrain the growth of perturbation and delay the contact separation.
Based on plastic instability, analytical prediction of bursting failure on tube hydroforming processes under combined infernal pressure and independent axial feeding is carried out. Bursting is irrecoverable phenomenon due to local instability under excessive tensile stresses. In order to predict the bursting failure, three different classical necking criteria such as diffuse necking criterion for sheet and tube, local necking criterion for sheet are introduced. The incremental theory of plasticity for anisotropic material is adopted and then the hydroforming limit and bursting failure diagram with respect to axial feeding and hydraulic pressure are presented. In addition, the influences of the material properties such as anisotropy Parameter, strain hardening exponent and strength coefficient on bursting Pressure are investigated. As results of the above approach, the hydroforming limit in view of bursting failure is verified with experimental results.
Researchers have applied theoretical and CFD models for years to analyze the fluidelastic instability (FEI) of tube arrays in steam generators and other heat exchangers. The accuracy of each approach has typically been evaluated using the discrepancy between the experimental critical flow velocity and the predicted value. In the best cases, the predicted critical flow velocity was within an order of magnitude comparable to the measured one. This paper revisits the quasi-steady approach for damping controlled FEI in a normal triangular array with a pitch ratio of P/d = 1.375. The method addresses the fluidelastic frequency at the stability threshold as an input parameter for the approach. The excellent agreement between the estimated stability thresholds and the equivalent experimental results suggests that the fluidelastic frequency must be included in the quasi-steady analysis, which requires minimal computing time and experimental data. In addition, the model allows a simple time delay analysis regarding flow convective and viscous effects.
In adaptive control, the lack of persistent and rich excitation causes the estimated parameters to drift, which degrade the performance of the system and may introduces instability to the system in a stochastic environment. To solve the problem of the parameter drift, the concept of single parameter adaptation is presented. For the parameter identification, a priori error is directly used for adaptation error. The structure of the controller is based upon the minimum variance control technique. The stability and robustness analysis is carried out by the sector stability theorem for the second order system. The computer simulation is performed to justify the theoretical analysis for the various cases.
To evaluate the combustion instability of a gas turbine combustor, the DMD technique was applied. The mode frequency results for each fuel composition were compared with FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) results. The damping coefficient, which is a quantitative parameter for combustion instability, was evaluated for 5 experimental cases. The flame transfer function (FTF) was calculated in the most unstable test case. In deriving the FTF, gain and phase were calculated using DMD technique. As a result of the analysis of the OH radical perturbation of the DMD, the heat release fluctuation was the highest at 100 Hz, at which the highest value of gain is observed. The frequency of FFT and FTF were different. In order to clarify the reason for this, FTF for various resonance frequencies was performed and it shows that the pattern of gain was similar to FFT.
Hard turning replaces grinding for finishing process with expectations of higher productivity and demanded surface quality. Especially for the surface roughness as surface quality demanded in finishing process of hard turning, know-how of machining characteristics of hardened materials by cutting force analysis should be accumulated in company with achievement of precision of elements and high stiffness design technology in hard turning. Considering chip formation mechanism of hardened materials, adequate cutting conditions are selected for machining experiments and cutting forces are measured according to cutting conditions. Increase of cutting forces especially thrust force and increase of dynamic instability could occur in hard turning. Analysis of dynamic characteristics of the cutting forces is executed to investigate relation between dynamic instability and surface roughness in hard turning. Investigation on effects of relative motion of machining system generated by vibration due to dynamic instability shows that ultimate surface roughness could be predicted considering relative motion of machining system with geometrical surface roughness.
A new load/displacement parameter method is developed for the cases that loads are applied to one or more points, and displacements of a structure are controlled at one or more points sinultaneously. The procedure exploits a generalized Riks method, which utilizes load/displacement parameters as scaling factors in order to analyze the post-buckling phenomena including snap-through or snap-back. A convergence characteristic is improved by employing new relaxation factors in incremental displacement parameter, particularly at the region where exhibits severe numerical instability. The improved performance is illustrated by means of numerical example.
This paper presents a novel approach based on eigenvalue perturbation of augmented matrix(AMEP) to estimate the eigenvalue for variation of controller parameter. AMEP is a useful tool in the analysis and design of large scale power systems containing many different types of exciters, governors and stabilizers. Also, it can be used to find possible sources of instability and to determine the most sensitivity parameters for low frequency oscillation modes. This paper describes the application results of AMEP algorithm with respect to all controller parameter of KEPCO systems. Simulation results for interarea and local mode show that the proposed AMEP algorithm can be used for turning controller parameter, and verifying system data and linear model.
