  • This paper reports the characteristics of TFTs, formed inside a location-controlled grain: "single-crystalline" Si TFTs (c-Si TFTs). Position of the grains were controlled with a great precision by "${\mu}-Czochralski$ (grain-filter) process". Effects of process parameters, such as, deposition method of gate $SiO_2$, crystallization energy density and position of the channel with respect to the grain filters on TFT characteristics is investigated. It is concluded that the characteristics of TFTs drastically improved by avoiding the grain filter from the channel region. With TFTs having the current-flow direction parallel to radial direction from the grain-filter, electron mobility and subthreshold swing of 600 $cm^2/Vs$ and 0.21 V/dec. respectively are obtained.

  • This paper presents an comparative study on the effect of STATCOM and UPFC to the power system static analysis. The effect of STATCOM can be analyzed with PSS/E program which is generally used in power system analysis, while UPFC model for static analysis is not provided yet. Thus, UPFC is equivalently represented as a synchronous condenser and load, while the active and reactive power of the specific transmission line and the voltage of the bus is controlled appropriately. This procedure is implemented by IPLAN which is an external macro program of PSS/E. The simulation results show that UPFC is more effective to control the bus voltage than STATCOM, because UPFC can control not only the bus voltage where the parallel inverter is installed but also the active and reactive power flow in the transmission line where the series inverter is installed.

  • The discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vents and their ecosystems is a monumental landmark in the history of Ocean Sciences. Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are scattered along the global mid-ocean ridges and back-arc basins. Under sea volcanic phenomena related to underlying magma activities along mid-ocean ridges generate extreme habitats for highly specialized communities of animals. Multidisciplinary research efforts during past three decades since the first discovery of hydrothermal vents along the Galapagos Rift in 1977 revealed fundamental components of physiology, ecology, and evolution of specialized vent communities of micro and macro fauna. Heterogeneous regional geological settings and tectonic plate history have been considered as important geophysical and evolutionary factors for current patterns of taxonomic composition and distribution of vent faunas among venting sites in the World Ocean basins. It was found that these communities are based on primary production of chemosynthetic bacteria which directly utilize reduced compounds, mostly $H_2S$ and $CH_4$, mixed in vent fluids. Symbioses between these bacteria and their hosts, vent invertebrates, are foundation of the vent ecosystem. Gene flow and population genetic studies in parallel with larval biology began to unveil hidden dispersal barrier under deep sea as well as various dispersal characteristics cross taxa. Comparative molecular phylogenetics of vent animals revealed that vent faunas are closely related to those of cold-water seeps in general. In perspective additional interesting discoveries are anticipated particularly with further refined and expanded studies aided by new instrumental technologies.

  • Two perforated plates are placed in parallel and staggered arrangements with a gap distance of 2 times of the hole diameter, and initial crossflow passes between the plates. Both the injection and effusion hole diameters are 10 mm, and the Reynolds number based on the hole diameter and hole-to-hole pitch are fixed to 10,000 and 6 times of the hole diameter, respectively. To investigate the effect of crossflow, the flow rate of crossflow is changed from 0.2 to 2 times of that of the impinging jet. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to determine the local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the upward facing surface of the effusion plate. With the initial crossflow, the heat/mass transfer rates on the effusion (target) plate decrease as the velocity of crossflow increases, since the crossflow induces the locally low transfer regions formed at the mid-way between the effusion holes. However, the impingement/effusion cooling with crossflow presents higher heat/mass transfer rates than the array jet impingement cooling with the same initial crossflow.

  • A fan is the most common air flow machinery and is being used in various different industries such as for heavy machinery, home appliances and automobile. An axial fan has blades that force air to move parallel to the shaft about which the blades rotate. This type of fan is used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from small cooling fans for electronics to the giant fans used in wind tunnels. An axial fan generating large air volume used to cool equipments, but is less efficient. A sirocco fan is a efficient device for moving air by centrifugal force and can generate high pressure. Fans that affect the performance and noise of a product are important components. It is also a time and budget consuming equipment to develop a fan through physical experiments. In order to overcome this problem, we have designed and developed a fan simulator for axial and sirocco fan's fluid analysis using supercomputer. Performance and noise prediction based on datamining without numerical analyses is also developed for the conceptual design of a fan.

  • Recently the construction of atrium buildings has increased but along with it many problems in thermal environment have arised. since the exterior wall of glass, indoor temperature is greatly influenced by weather conditions and since the space volume is very large, the vertical air temperature is not uniform. So, in this study, a Vertical Temperature Distribution Model was developed to predict the vertical air temperature of an atrium and evaluate the effects of the design parameters on the air temperature distribution of an atrium. To consider the characteristics of the vertical air temperature distribution in an atrium, the Satosh Togari's Macroscopic Model was used basically for the calculation of the vertical air temperature distribution in large space and the solar radiation analysis model and natural ventilation analysis model in atrium. And to calculate the unsteady-state inside wall surface temperature(boundary condition), the finite difference method was used. For the verification of the developed temperature distribution program, numerical evaluation of air flow by the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and in-situ test was conducted in parallel. The results of this study, the developed temperature distribution program was seen to predict the thermal condition of the atrium very accurately.

  • A dynamic model has been developed to investigate the operability of a single and double-effect solar energy assisted parallel type absorption chiller. In the study, main components and fluid transport mechanism were modeled. And solar radiation and the solar collector also were also modeled along with its control design. The model was run for the single mode with solar energy supply only and the solar/gas driving double effect mode. From the simulation results, it was found that the present configuration of the chiller is not capable of regulating solution flow rates according to variable solar energy input. And the issues of the excessive circulation flowrate and the mismatch between available solar power and cooling load discourages the use of the single mode, but the dual use of gas and solar power is recommendable in view of controllability and enhanced COP.

  • This paper investigated the applicable possibility of PTT and wool staple fibers to the air vortex system as high quality yarns for a high emotional and comfort garment. It was found that the tactile hand of vortex yarn knitted fabrics was harsher than ring and compact yarns knitted fabrics. It was observed that formability and sewability of air vortex yarn knitted fabrics seemed worse than ring and compact yarns due to low tensile and compressional resilience and high bending and shear hysteresis of air vortex yarn knitted fabrics. It revealed that wicking and drying rates of air vortex yarn knitted fabric were better than ring and compact yarns; in addition, the heat keepability of vortex yarn knitted fabric was higher than ring and compact yarns due to low thermal conductivity and max heat flow rate ($Q_{max}$). Any difference of thermal shrinkage between air vortex and ring yarn knitted fabrics was not shown, but pilling characteristic of air vortex yarn knitted fabric was superior. However, it was shown that wicking, drying, thermal property and pilling characteristics of air vortex yarn knitted fabric were superior due to air vortex yarn structure with parallel fibers in the core part and periodical and fasciated twists in the sheath part of the yarns.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the analytic solution for determining the optimal capacity (lot-size) of a batch-storage network to meet the finished product demand under infrequent shutdowns. Batch processes are bound to experience random but infrequent operating time losses. Two common remedies for these failures are duplicating another process or increasing the process and storage capacity, both of which are very costly in modern manufacturing systems. An optimization model minimizing the total cost composed of setup and inventory holding costs as well as the capital costs of constructing processes and storage units is pursued with the framework of a batch-storage network of which flows are susceptible to infrequent shutdowns. The superstructure of the plant consists of a network of serially and/or parallel interlinked batch processes and storage units. The processes transform a set of feedstock materials into another set of products with constant conversion factors.A novel production and inventory analysis method, the PSW (Periodic Square Wave) model, is applied. The advantage of the PSW model stems from the fact it provides a set of simple analytic solutions in spite of a realistic description of the material flow between processes and storage units. The resulting simple analytic solution can greatly enhance a proper and quick investment decision at the early plant design stagewhen confronted with diverse economic situations.
