  • A study on the solidification of sludge by reactive amendment agent was carried out in this paper. The reactive amendment agent used in this study is mainly composed of inorganic solidification agent and reactive adsorptive material. The reactive agent has a function of soil-cement-agent solidification and harmlessness of contaminant in waste. The reactive agent is environmentally friendly material to the surrounding environment. In this study, a series of tests and experiments including unconfined compressive strength, permeability, pH test, constituent analysis, leaching test were carried out to analyse engineering and environmental characteristics of solidified sludge treated reactive agent. The result of this research shows that the solidified sludge treated reactive agent is increased in strength and decreased in contaminant concentration.

  • In general, the electric motor for driving the centrifuge of Decanter type is selected based on the power(starting power) necessary to start the bowl and the screw shaft. However the operation cost of the machine is dependent on the power needed at a steadily operating condition, including the power against the bearing friction and that for the sludge removal. In this paper, the formulation for the sludge-removal power is presented. Sample calculation for a specific design shows that the sludge-removal power is increased with the friction coefficient. It also reveals that the power is mainly dependent on the length of the screw blade rather than the beach angle. Further it is shown that the power increases in square of the rotational speed of the machine.

  • Although Fly ash possess viable engineering properties, an overwhelming majority of the fly ash from coal combustion is still placed in storage or disposal sites. Similarly, sludges generated from various water treatment operations are predominantly subject to the fate of land disposal. To prepare sludges for land disposal typically requires time consuming dewatering schemes, which can become extremely difficult to execute dependent upon the composition of the sludge and its affinity for water. This test was undertaken to reuse of fly ash and sludge with mix. In this paper includes of geotechnical properties of fly ash and fly ash-sludge mixture and results of compaction test, unconfined test, falling head test and CBR test and it was analyzed the effect on mixing fly ash with sludge.

  • The discharge of sewage sludge ash that is rapidly increasing in Korea. The utilization of sewage sludge ash would contribute to the elimination of an environmental problem and to the development of new high-performance materials. So the paper is focused on an experimental study in order to investigate the utilization of sewage sludge ash as the construction materials. It achieves leaching test, chemical composition and compressive strength test. As a result of tests, the sewage sludge ash has sufficient potential for use of pozzolanic raw material. However. it is judged to be available to construction material if research is continuously gone.

  • An effective technique of sludge separation is required for excess sludge of sewage or wastewater plant. The separation of bulking sludge of paper manufacturing plant was studied using DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) system. The effects of parameters such as nozzle type, A/S(air/solid) ratio. pressure, injection time of pressured water and saturation time were examined. The results showed that the best nozzle type was flat which had small orifice hole, The optimum A/S ratio and pressure were $7.070\times10^{-3}$(recycle ratio of pressured water $20\%$) and 5atm, respectively. Injection times of pressurized water around 20-25 sesc and flotation time of 30 min appeared to be optimal for the DAF operation. The order of performance of packing was 18 mm > 22 mm > 32 mm.

  • As a basic research for developing a sludge application technique in forestry, this study was conducted to investigage a reasonable amount and period of sludge to be applied onto forest nursery of Acer palmatum Thunb. The paper mill sludge was used for the study, and ammonium nitrate was treated to some of them to reduce the C/N ratio lower than 40. The maximum amount of applied sludge was 7ton/ha/year, and they were spread on spring and on late summer. The sludge application did not stimulate early growth of the trees during a year. Since there was no significant changes in soil chemical properties, the amount of applied sludge was thought to be too little to result in a significant role for tree growth. However, the soil water showed significant increase of Cu when the activated sludges were applied during late summer. Thus, the time of application need to be determined cautiously with considering the risk of ground water contamination. In conclusion, if we set a goal from the view point of long-term concept such as forest productivity rather than to get a short-term product, the uncomposted sludge in small amount during growing season might be considered to be applied on forest nursery.

  • The objective of this study is to improve the function of an artificial culture soil which was mixed mainly with alum sludge. The artificial culture soil was more efficient than the commercial culture soil for the growth of perennial ryegrass and bush clover. Artificial culture soil was prepared paper sludge(40%), alum sludge(30%), sewage sludge(20%), and compost (10%). This artificial culture soil had no adverse effect on phytotoxicity tests. The alum sludge gives some water holding capacity and cohesion strength to the soil enought to require no other addition of adhesive agents. The leaching of aluminum from the alum sludge was negligible even at very low pH(=2) due to the mixed compost.

  • This article presents the flexural behaviour of reinforced fly ash (FA)-based geopolymer concrete (GPC) beams with partial replacement of FA for about 10% by weight with paper sludge ash (PSA). The beams were made of M35 grade concrete and cured under three curing conditions for comparison viz., ambient curing, external exposure curing, and oven curing at $60^{\circ}C$. The beams were experimentally tested at the 28th day of casting after curing by conducting two-point loading flexural test. Performance aspects such as load carrying capacity, first crack load, load-deflection and moment-curvature behaviours of both types of beams were experimentally studied and their results were compared under different curing conditions. To verify the response of reinforced GPC beams numerically, an ANSYS 13.0 finite element program was also used. The result shows that there is a good agreement between computer model failure behaviour with the experimental failure behaviour.

  • In recent years, problems of industrial solid wastes appear to be kind of national crises, caused by a sudden increase in their quantities, lack of disposal technique, and public discontent in installing plants for their disposal. This study is designed to investigate that pozzolana-based materials, such as blast furnace slag, fly-ash, paper sludge-ash, which are produced from industries as solid wastes, can be used as construction materials. The variations of concrete strength in function of compositional differences of raw materials including the wastes are studied experimentally. As a result, we find out that the blast furnace slag, the fly-ash, and the paper sludge-ash can be recycled as useful resources for replacement of cements by adjusting their substitution ratio.
