  • Objective : For the purpose of developing Korean herbology of the plants to Papaveraceae in Korea, the literatures of the successive generations have been thoroughly investigated to prepare this article. Methods : Books and research papers about Herbology which published at home and abroad were examined. Results : A list was made about Papaveraceae plant which were cultivated or grew naturally in Korea, after investigated the data on domestic and foreign Papaveraceae plants. Out of those lists, serviceable plants were selected and with those available plants, their distributions were analysed and parts which can be used as medicines were divided into 3 categories such as oriental medicine name, scientific name and non-official name. Papaveraceae's properties flavor, channels they use, effects, and toxicity were also noted. Papaveraceae (grew in Korea) were divided into 4 classes with 8 species. Out of those, 3 classes with 4 species were found serviceable which indicates 50% of all. Out of all 8 species of Papaveraceae family, Papaver genus were found 4 species, which were shown the most. Among 3 genus of 4 species, medicinal plants were all one species each. Out of all serviceable parts in Papaveraceae, Radix and Herba, Etc parts took first place as 2 species. There are toxic, the 3 species and 6 parts survey said. Conclusion : There were totaled to 4 genera and 8 species in Papaveraceae in Korea and among them medicinal plants are 3 genera, 4 species, some 50% in total.

  • In the course of screening Korean natural products for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity, it was found that a methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Corydalis incisa (Papaveraceae) showed significant inhibitory effects on AChE. Corynoline isolated from this plant inhibited AChE activity in a dose-dependent manner, and the $IC_{50}$ value of corynoline was $30.6{\;}{\mu}M$. The AChE inhibitory activity of corynoline was reversible and noncompetitive.

  • Aerial parts of Corydalis ochotensis Turcz. (Papaveraceae) has been used as a folk medicine in China for its antipyretic, analgesic and diuretic properties, which is widely distributed in Korea. Phytochemical study of the aerial parts of C. ochotensis led to the isolation of three isoquinoline alkaloids, (+)adlumidine, govadine and (-)severtzine, together with quercetin, rutin and tridecanoic acid. These compounds were established by conventional methods of analysis and identified by $^{1}$H,$^{13}$ C-NMR, and MS data.

  • Coreanomecon is a monotypic and endemic genus in Korea, distributed mainly in the southern regions. Coreanomecon is morphologically similar to Hylomecon by producing red latex, easily distinguished from Chelidonium, which produces yellow latex. Coreanomecon were merged into Hylomecon or Chelidonium depending on the authors. To understand the phylogenetic relationship of Coreanomecon, DNA sequences of chloroplast rbcL and matK and nuclear Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) regions were determined from the species of Papaveroideae (Papaveraceae) in Korea and analyzed with the Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian methods. Phylogenetic analyses of Papaveroideae suggest that Coreanomecon is sister to the clade of Chelidonium and Stylophorum in the ITS data and that it is sister to Hylomecon in the chloroplast (cpDNA) data. A constraining analysis using the Shimodaira-Hasegawa test (S-H test) suggested that the ITS data do not reject the sister relationship of Coreanomecon and Hylomecon. The S-H test also suggested that the cpDNA data is compatible with the placement of Coreanomecon as a sister to the clade of Chelidonium and Stylophorum. Although the conflicting phylogenetic results may stem from insufficient phylogenetic signals, they may also be associated with hybridization between Hylomecon and an ancestor of Stylophorum and Chelidonium. The results of this study suggest that Coreanomecon is a distinct lineage as an endemic genus, supporting the morphological data.

  • Dehydrocorydaline was isolated from the roots of Corydalis ternata (Papaveraceae) and identified by the comparison the $^1H-$ and $^{13}C$-NMR spectral data with those of authentic sample. The content of dehydrocorydaline was determined by the HPLC analysis based on extraction of ground plant material. Quantitative analysis of dehydrocorydaline in MeOH extract of C. ternata by HPLC showed $1.31{\pm}0.95%$ in 20 samples collected throughout regions of Korea.

  • Alkaloid producing species of plants have long been a major component of the medicinal social and magico-religious aspects of human culture. A diverse array of biological activities has been attributed to different alkaloids including numerous members of benzylisoquinoline family of alkaloids. For biotechnological approaches of alkaloid biosynthesis in poppy family, plant regeneration protocol through somatic embryogenesis or shoot organogenesis is a first step. This paper describes the methods and applications of plant regeneration of poppy family.

  • Corydalis Tuber has been used in traditional medicine for an analgesic, antispasmodic and gastric ulcers. For the quality control on this drug, isolation and quantitative determination of berberine and coptisine from Corydalis ternata Nakai (Papaveraceae) has been conducted by using HPLC method. Berberine and coptisine in quarternary alkaloidal fraction from the crude drug were separated on silicagel column using a $CHCl_3:MeOH\;(85:15)$ and $CHCl_3:MeOH:H_2O\;(70:30:4)$ as an eluent, and the average contents were about 0.93 and 0.36%.

  • Here we report the cytotoxic activity of three known compounds isolated for the first time from Corydalis pallida (Papaveraceae). An isoquinoline alkaloid, berberine, exhibited cytototoxic activity against two human cancer cell lines, HT-1080 (human fibrosarcoma) and SNU-638 (human stomach adenocarcinoma), with $IC_{50}$ values of 3.2 and 3.4 $\mu$g/mL, respectively. Ntrans-feruloyltyramine and N-trans-feruloylmethoxytyramine were also isolated from this plant but were inactive.
