  • Liquid filling machines are frequently used in packaging fields; however, there exists a problem in precisely measuring the quantity of the liquid. In the case where the liquid filling machine is not properly metered, there may be issues, such as the fluid exceeding the capacity or chemicals being exposed outside. In this paper, we propose a smart injection nozzle device that can solve the issues stated above. The proposed smart injection nozzle can raise the nozzle according to the water level to remove bubbles and inject the accurate amount of fluid. In addition, the efficiency of the logistics process is enhanced by the smart QR code. Through experiments using the developed smart injection nozzle device, we have noticed that the accuracy of injection capacity, nozzle position, reaction time and building data exceeded the target value. Therefore, it expected that this machine will give more production and save a lot of manpower for packaging industry.

  • Top-to-bottom compression strength of corrugated fiberboard boxes is partly dependent on the load-carrying ability of the central panel areas. The ability of these central areas to resist bending under load will increase the stacking strength of the box. The difference of box compression strengths, among boxes which are made with identical dimensions and fabricated with same components but different flute sizes, is primarily due to difference of the flexural stiffness of the box panels. Top-to-bottom compression strength of a box is accurately predicted by flexural stiffness measurements and the edge crush test of the combined boards. This study was rallied out to analyze the flexural stiffness, maximum bending force and maximum deflection for various corrugated fiber-boards by experimental investigation. There were significant differences between the machine direction (MD) and the cross-machine direction (CD) of corrugated fiberboards tested. It was about 50% in SW and DW, and $62%{\sim}74%$ in dual-medium corrugated fiberboards(e.g. DM, DMA and DMB), respectively. There were no significant differences of maximum deflection in machine direction among the tested fiberboards but, in cross direction, DM showed the highest value and followed by SW, DMA, DMB and DW in order. For the corrugated fiberboards tested, flexural stiffness in machine direction is about $29%{\sim}48%$ larger than cross direction, and difference of flexural stiffness between the two direction is the lowest in DMA and DMB.

  • For both economic and ecological reasons corrugated box manufacturers are seeking to produce acceptably strong boxes while using more recycled paper. This study was to develop hydrophilic coating agents in order to improve overall physical properties of recycled corrugated fiberboard liners. Two coating agents were developed and applied to 'S' corrugating medium. The results showed that compression strength of new liners, named 'S-A' and 'S-B', were increased significantly both standard humidity and high humidity environment and it was as much as 'SK' liner. New developed liners were also economically advantageous since new liners were estimated about one hundred fifty dollars per ton cheaper than SK liner. The study indicated that further work is needed on the coating technology and machine development.

  • As one of traditional packaging materials, paper and paperboard are being more popular and beneficial thanks to their environmental sustainability and have been widely used in packaging applications, from light weight infusible tissue for tea/coffee bags to heavy duty boards for the distribution. Papermakers have to design the products having a desired customized function with their paper machine. Globally, the use of filler and pigment in papermaking is now a very common practice to meet the needs of customers. Many benefits can be achieved as a result of filler addition, which mainly includes cost and energy savings. The replacement of traditional mineral fillers and pigments with biodegradable and renewable carbohydrate polymers is a very interesting and promising research topic due to the concern of environmental impact. In this review paper, the use of traditional and novel carbohydrate fillers and pigments in cellulosic paper is highlighted. It is noteworthy that there are still some challenges and technical barriers associated with the use of these organic materials in point of structural stabilities and manufacturing costs, although most of them are available in market as the commercialized products. With the emerging nanotechnologies, it is believed that the use of carbohydrate-based filler and pigment for papermaking will increase and bring technical advantages to industry.

  • The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of spent coffee grounds (SCG) biofiller on the morphological, thermal, mechanical and hydrolytic degradation characteristics of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) based biocomposites. The PLA-based biocomposite films were fabricated by using a high-viscosity kneading and hot-pressing machine. The PLA/SCG biocomposites were analyzed with SEM, DSC, TGA, UTM and hydrolytic degradation test. Aggregation in the PLA matrix is a result of increasing SCG concentrations. In the thermal properties, it was described that the cold crystallization temperature (Tcc) decreased as SCG was added to PLA. When SCG was incorporated to PLA, the degradation onset temperature (Tonset) revealed a diminish. The elastic modulus increased while tensile strength of PLA diminished as SCG was applied. Through hydrolysis analysis, the decomposition of PLA was accelerated with the addition of SCG. This research confirmed the possibility of devloping an eco-friendly packaging material with high degradability as SCG hasten the breakdown of PLA.

  • Research and interest in sustainable printing are increasing in the packaging printing industry. Currently, predicting the amount of ink required for each work is based on the experience and intuition of field workers. Suppose the amount of ink produced is more than necessary. In this case, the rest of the ink cannot be reused and is discarded, adversely affecting the company's productivity and environment. Nowadays, machine learning models can be used to figure out this problem. This study compares the ink usage prediction machine learning models. A simple linear regression model, Multiple Regression Analysis, cannot reflect the nonlinear relationship between the variables required for packaging printing, so there is a limit to accurately predicting the amount of ink needed. This study has established various prediction models which are based on CART (Classification and Regression Tree), such as Decision Tree, Random Forest, Gradient Boosting Machine, and XGBoost. The accuracy of the models is determined by the K-fold cross-validation. Error metrics such as root mean squared error, mean absolute error, and R-squared are employed to evaluate estimation models' correctness. Among these models, XGBoost model has the highest prediction accuracy and can reduce 2134 (g) of wasted ink for each work. Thus, this study motivates machine learning's potential to help advance productivity and protect the environment.

  • Onions are a significant crop in Korea, and cultivation is increasing every year along with high demand. Onions are planted in the fall and mainly harvested in June, the rainy season, therefore, physiological changes in onion bulbs during long-term storage might have happened. Onions are stored in cold room and at adequate relative humidity to avoid quality loss. In this study, bio-yield stress and weight loss were measured as the quality parameters of net packaged onions during 10 weeks of storage, and the storage environmental conditions are monitored using sensor networks systems. Quality estimation of net packaged onion during storage was performed using the storage environmental condition data through machine learning approaches. Among the suggested estimation models, support vector regression method showed the best accuracy for the quality estimation of net packaged onions.

  • Sintering and dielectric characteristics of substrates were estimated by mixing rate of alumina and potashborosilicate glass(PBSG) powders. PBSG powders were used 7761(corning code)and alumina powders were used in extra pure rate(99.9%) and had 0.1 ${\mu}$m mean size. After ball milling with organic additives green sheets which were casted by doctor blade machine were sintered at 800$^{\circ}C$ for 1∼3hrs. Microstructure, linear shrinkage and dielectric constant of substrates were surveyed in order to fabricate low-dielectric and low tem-perature sintering substrate.
