  • This research aims at designing a diaphragm made of SUS316L stainless steel for ultra high pressure sensors and evaluating its performance with a PZT driven deformation tester instead of high pressure chamber testing up to 100 MPa. Finite element method analysis indicates that the optimum thickness of a flat diaphragm is 1.5 mm not only to secure safety of sensors up to 100 MPa but also to enhance displacement measuring sensitivity. For this thickness, the maximum displacement at the center of the diaphragm is $5.3{\mu}m$. The PZT actuator must offer a force of 1,669 N to create a pressure of 100 MPa at the diaphragm surface in order to obtain a displacement of $5.3{\mu}m$. The performance evaluation by the PZT driven tester demonstrates nearly the same results as the same results as the sensors tested in the ultra high pressure chamber.

  • A study on smart seats for railroad vehicles was conducted using piezoelectric (PZT) sensors. For this purpose, the concept of passenger friendly smart seats was defined, and a PZT sensor was selected as the optimum sensor based on this concept. Using PZT sensors, simulation tests were performed using a sub-scale model railroad vehicle. In these tests, the main functions of the smart seats were extracted and simplified to improve the effectiveness of the simulation tests. Based on the test results, the system for smart seats proposed in this paper was successfully verified using PZT sensors and the dedicated operation software for the system. This paper will contribute to the improvement of services in high-speed rail systems through advances in ticket checking tasks.

  • PCN-PZT piezoelectric acceleration sensors of annular shear mode voltage type were fabricated and their characteristics have been investigated. Field tests are also carried out. To avoid noise problems from the environmental conditions, acceleration sensors employed solid state micro-electronics for pre-amplifier. The calibration procedures based on the principle of the comparison method were adopted for investigating the characteristics of fabricated acceleration sensors. The voltage sensitivity and resonant frequency of fabricated acceleration sensors were 83mv/g, 23kHz, respectively. The lower and upper frequency limit were 4Hz and 9kHz, respectively. The variation of the voltage sensitivity showed 10% at $-406{\circ}C\; and\; 9%\; at\; 121^{\circ}C$ compared to that of reference temperature at $40^{\circ}C$.

  • We present a study on the development of a practical and quantitative technique for the assessment of the structural health condition with using piezoceramic(PZT) sensors. The electro-impedance-based technique with the PZT patches is very sensitive for evaluation of the incipient and small damage in a high frequency range, and however the commonly traditional modal analysis method is effective only for considerably larger damages in low frequency range. The paper presents the technique in detecting and characterizing real-time damage on the specimen that is an aluminum plate fastened with bolts and nuts by different torques and as well a plate with a crack. By using the special arrangement of the PZT sensors, the required longitudinal wave is generated through the specimen. A large number of experiments are conducted and the different conditions of the specimens, i.e. the location and extent of loosening bolts, and the plate with a crack are simulated. respectively. Since fixing and loosening the loosened bolt is controlled by a torque wrench, we can control exactly the experiment of the different torques. Compared with the simulated healthy condition, we can find whether or not there is a damage in the specimen with using an impedance analyzer with the PZT sensors. Several indices are discussed and used for assessing the different simulated damages. As for the location of bolt loosening, the RMSD is found to be the most appropriate index for numerical assessment and as well the RMSD shows strongly linear relationship for assessing the extent of the bolt loosening, and the frequency peak shift ${\Delta}F$ is used to assess the cracked plate. The possibility of repeatability of the pristine condition signatures is also presented and the appropriate frequency range and interval are uniquely selected through large numbers of experiments.

  • Various monitoring sensors have been used for the monitoring, damage and vibration prediction of structures. They have been used for sensing damage in a variety of materials and structures such as piezoelectric materials (PZT) and electric strain gauges. But, many experiments of vibration were not performed. The PZT changes physical force if load cell to electrical signal due to deformation of structure. The voltage change of piezoelectric sensors for plates are used for vibration prediction. In this study, a fundamental study for vibration prediction using piezoelectric sensors are discussed in plates.

  • The currently used semiconductor pressure sensors are piezoresistive and capacitive type. Especially, semiconductor micro pressure sensors have a great deal of attention because of their small size. However, its fabrication processes are difficult, so that its yield is poor. For the purpose of resolving the drawbacks of the existing silicon pressure sensors, we demonstrate a new type of pressure sensor using PSFET(pressure sensitive field effect transistor) and investigate its operational characteristics. We used PZT(Pb(Zr,Ti)$O_3$) as a pressure sensing material. PZT thin films were deposited on a gate oxide of MOSFET by an rf-magnetron sputtering method. To abtain the stable phase, perovskite structure, furnace annealing technique have been employed in PbO ambient. The sensitivity of the PSFET was 0.38 mV/mmHg.

  • Various monitoring sensors are used to predict and detect structural damage. Smart sensors, such as glass-fiber sensors, PZT, and MEMS, among others, have replaced traditional sensors. They are now being used in many areas. This study aims to predict the damage by measuring the PZT voltage attached on the specimen by the applied impact load. In the experiment to detect damages in beam connection, simple $H-400{\times}200{\times}8{\times}13$ beams were spliced with bolts. The results of FFT between PZT sensor and accelrometer were compared to measure the sensitivity of the PZT sensor. The damage to the beam was presumed by loosening the bolt, and then the damage measurement was accompanied. Secondly, a steel $PL600{\times}65{\times}5.8$ plate beam was fabricated for the purpose of experimenting on damage measurement. Impact loading test on three different locations was carried out. Damage width varied between 6~42mm on both sides by cutting, using a steel saw. The ratio of frequencies before and after the damage was computed to quantify the damage level by using FFT, and the change in mode pattern with the increased damage was investigated to measure the damage.

  • The spatial focusing of time reversal Lamb waves on a plate has attracted considerable attention for identifying the location of an input source. This study investigates the spatial focusing performance on a plate with respect to the number of piezoelectric (PZT) sensors for varying locations of input sources. In particular, a small number of PZT sensors produce spatial focusing through the virtual sensor effect due to reflection of Lamb waves at plate edges. The spatial focusing performance with respect to the number of PZT sensors is quantified in terms of signal to noise ratio through numerical simulation and its implication is discussed.

  • Magnetoelectric (ME) composites were designed using the PMN-PZT single crystal and Ni foils; the properties and magnetic-field sensitivities of ME composites with different piezoelectric vibration modes (i.e., 31, 32, and 36 modes that depend on the crystal orientation of the single crystal) were compared. In the off-resonance condition, the ME coupling properties of the ME composites with the 32 and 36 piezoelectric vibration modes were better than those of the ME composites with the 31 piezoelectric vibration mode. However, in the resonance condition, the ME coupling properties of the ME composites were almost similar, irrespective of the piezoelectric vibration mode. Additionally, in the off-resonance condition (at 1 kHz), the magnetic-field sensitivity of the ME composites with the 36 piezoelectric vibration mode was up to 2 nT and those of the ME composites with the 31 and 32 piezoelectric vibration modes were up to 5 nT. These magnetic-field sensitivities are similar to those offered by conventional high-sensitivity magnetic-field sensors; the potential of the proposed sensor to replace costly and bulky high-sensitivity magnetic field sensors is significant.
