Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), PVA/Montmorillonite (MMT), PVA/Silver (Ag), and PVA/MMT/Ag nanocomposite nanowebs were prepared by electrospinning technique in aqueous solution. In order to investigate the effect of inorganic materials on the morphology and thermal properties of PVA based nanocomposite nanowebs, experiments were performed with 5 wt.% of MMT and Ag. Field emission type scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), reflection type X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal gravimetric analyzer were utilized to characterize nanocomposite nanowebs. TEM and XRD results show MMT and Ag were well dispersed in PVA nanowebs. Those inorganic nanoparticles enhanced thermal property of the nanocomposite nanowebs.
Blends of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), polyethyleneimine (PEI), and graphene oxide (GO) were prepared by solution casting method. Calorimetric thermal properties of the blends were investigated. The $T_gs$ of PVA/PEI blends were higher than the $T_gs$ of either of the component polymers at low concentrations of PEI. These abnormal increases of $T_gs$ may be due to the negative entropy of mixing which is associated with strong hydrogen bonding between PVA and PEI. The degree of depression of $T^0_ms$ was not reduced by the negative entropy of mixing, since strong hydrogen bonding also causes an increase in the magnitude of negative ${\chi}$ between PVA and PEI. The $T_g$ of PVA was increased significantly by adding 0.7 wt.% GO into PVA. The magnitude of negative ${\chi}$ was increased by adding GO into the blends of PVA and PEI.
LAS-system ceramic powder, spodumene ($Li_2O{\cdot}Al_2O_3{\cdot}4SiO_2$), was successfully synthesized by a chemical solution technique employing PVA(polyvinyl alcohol) as an organic carrier. The PVA content affected the microstructure of porous precursor gels and the crystalline development. The optimum PVA content contributed to homogeneous distribution of metal ions in the precursor gel and it resulted in the synthesis of glass free $\beta$-spodumene powder having a specific surface area of $7.57\;m^2/g$. The agglomerated $\beta$-spodumene powders were also enough soft to grind to fine powders by a simple ball milling process. The microstructures of the densified powder compacts were strongly dependant on the minor phases of spodumene solid solution and amount of liquid phase, which were formed from the inhomogeneous precursors.

Pure and stable YAG $(Y_3Al_5O_{12})$ powders were synthesized by a PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) polymer solution technique. PVA was used as an organic carrier for the precursor ceramic gel. The precursor gels were crystallized to YAG at relatively a low temperature of $900\;^{\circ}C$. The synthesized powders, which have nano-sized primary particles, were soft and porous, and the porous powders were ground to sub-micron size by a simple ball milling process. The ball-milled powders were densified to 94% relative density at $1500\;^{\circ}C$ for 1h. In this study, the characteristics of the synthesized YAG powders were examined.
$2ZrO_2{\cdot}P_2O_5$ powder, which is not synthesized by solid reaction method, was successfully synthesized through PVA solution method. In this process, the firing temperature and the PVA content strongly affected the crystallization behavior and final particle size. A stable ${\alpha}$-phase $2ZrO_2{\cdot}P_2O_5$ was synthesized at a firing temperature of $1200^{\circ}C$ and holding time of 4 h. ${\beta}$-phase $2ZrO_2{\cdot}P_2O_5$ was observed, with un-reacted $ZrO_2$ phases, for firing temperatures lower than $1200^{\circ}C$. In terms of the PVA content effect, the powder prepared with a PVA mixing ratio of 12:1 showed stable ${\alpha}$-phase $2ZrO_2{\cdot}P_2O_5$; however, the ${\beta}$-phase was found to co-exist at relatively higher PVA content. The synthesized ${\alpha}$-phase $2ZrO_2{\cdot}P_2O_5$ powder showed an average particle size of 100~250 nm and an average thermal expansion coefficient of $-2.5{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ in the range of room temp. ${\sim}800^{\circ}C$.
The polydiacethylene (PDA) is known to change its color by mechanical shear. The shear-induced color transition has been reported with elastomer or film type of PDA. In this paper, we newly investigated the transition with liposome type of PDAs in polymeric solutions. The liposomes were dispersed in Poly(vinyl alcohol) 2% + Sodium borate 1%, Poly(vinyl alcohol) 15% and Hyaluronic acid 1% (PVA/B, PVA, HA). The shear stress was continuously imposed to each solution by stress control type rheometer with coni-cylinder fixture. The degree of color transition was quantified with the characteristic absorbance peak at 540 nm (blue) and 640 nm (red). As a result, PDA liposome in PVA/B solution changed the color from blue to red upon increasing the magnitude of shear (from 0 to 100 Pa) and the duration of shear-imposed time (from 0 to 5400 sec). Meanwhile, PDA liposome in HA or PVA solution did not noticeably change the color, even though the low shear viscosities of the solutions were kept almost constant. This color transition of PDA liposome is expected to measure the magnitude of shear, and to distinguish different responses of polymeric solutions to the applied shear.
YAG phosphor powders were fabricated by the atmospheric plasma spraying method with the spray-dried spherical YAG precursor. The YAG precursor slurry for the spray drying process was prepared by the PVA solution chemical processing utilizing a domestic easy-sintered aluminum oxide (Al2O3) powder as a seed. The homogenous and viscous slurry resulted in dense granules, not hollow or porous particles. The synthesized phosphor powders demonstrated a stable YAG phase, and excellent fluorescence properties of approximately 115% compared with commercial YAG:Ce3+ powder. The microstructure of the phosphor powder had a perfect spherical shape and an average particle size of approx imately 30 ㎛. As a result of the PKG test of the YAG phosphor powder, the synthesized phosphor powders exhibited an outstanding luminous intensity, and a peak wavelength was observed at 531 nm.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the functional ingredients of Perilla Frutescens L. Britt extracts and to confirm the possibility of producing PVA nanofibers using extracts. Distilled water, 3% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and ethanol were used as extraction solvents. The electrospinning was carried out at a PVA concentration of 12%, an applied voltage of 10 kV and a tip to collector distance of 15cm. The contents of volatile substances, essential oils, total polyphenols and flavonoids of the extracts were measured to examine the constituents of functional materials. Flavor components and esters were identified in 3% sodium hydroxide and ethanol extracts. The content of polyphenols and flavonoids in ethanol extracts was higher than that of medicinal plants. 1wt.% of Tween 20 was added to disperse the essential oil components of the ethanol extract. Addition of a dispersant made it possible to produce a homogeneous mixture by having some compatibility with the ethanol extracts and the PVA molecule. When the concentration of the ethanol extract was 0.25 and 0.5wt%, relatively uniform PVA nanofiber having an average diameter of 350 to 365nm could be produced. The results of FT-IR, XRD and DSC analysis confirmed that Perilla Frutescens L. Britt ethanol extract was well mixed with PVA molecules and was electrospun.
Polyvinyl alcohol/alginate hydrogel beads containing Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH-PVA/alginate beads) were synthesized for phosphate removal. Results showed that blending PVA with the LDH-alginate beads significantly improved their stability in a phosphate solution. The kinetic reaction in LDH-PVA/alginate beads reached equilibrium at 12 hr-post reaction with 99.2% removal. The amount of phosphate removed at equilibrium ($q_e$) was determined to be 0.389 mgP/g. The equilibrium data were described well by the Freundlich isotherm with the distribution coefficient ($K_F$, 0.638) and the constant (n, 0.396). Phosphate removal in LDH-PVA/alginate beads was not sensitive to solution pH. Also, the removal capacity of LDH-PVA/alginate beads ($q_e$, 1.543 mgP/g) was two orders of magnitude greater than that of PVA/alginate beads ($q_e$, 0.016 mgP/g) in column experiments. This study demonstrates that LDH-PVA/alginate beads with a higher chemical stability against phosphate compared to LDH-alginate beads have the potential for phosphate removal as adsorptive media.
