  • In this study, the fiber blending ratio and strain rate effect on the tensile behavior of hybrid fiber reinforced cement composite was evaluated. Hooked steel fiber and polyvinyl alcohol fiber were used for reinforcing fiber. The fiber blending ratio of HSF+PVA were 1.5+0.5, 1.0+1.0 and 0.5+1.5vol.%. As a results, the tensile strength, strain capacity and fracture toughness of the hooked steel fiber reinforced cement composites were improved by the increase of the bond strength of the fiber and the matrix according to increase of strain rate. However, the tensile stress sharply decreased after the peak stress because of the decrease in the number of straightened pull-out fibers by micro cracks in the matrix around hooked steel fiber. On the other hand, PVA fiber showed cut-off fracture at strain rate $10^{-6}/s$ with multiple cracks. However, at the strain rate $10^1/s$, the multiple cracks and strain capacity were decreased because of the pull-out fracture of PVA fiber. The HSF1.5PVA0.5 shown the highest tensile strength because the PVA fiber suppressed the micro cracks in the matrix around the hooked steel fiber and improved the pull-out resistance of hooked steel fiber. Thus, DIF of strain capacity and fracture toughness of HSF1.5PVA were greatly improved. In addition, the synergistic response of fracture toughness was positive because the tensile stress was slowly decreased after the peak stress by improvement of the pull-out resistance of hooked steel fiber at strain rate $10^1/s$.

  • Cement has been traditionally used as a main binding material of high ductile fiber reinforced cementitious composites. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of using alkali-activated slag and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers for manufacturing high ductile fiber reinforced cementless composites. Two mixture proportions with proper flowability and mortar viscosity for easy fiber mixing and uniform fiber dispersion were selected based on alkali activators. Then, the slump flow, compression, uniaxial tension and bending tests were performed on the mixes to evaluate the basic properties of the composites. The cementless composites showed an average slump flow of 465 mm and tensile strain capacity of approximately 2% of due to formation of multiple micro-cracks. Test results demonstrated a feasibility of manufacturing high ductile fiber reinforced composites without using cement.

  • The objective of this study is to develop sustainable PVA fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (FRCCs) that could exhibit comparable strength level to normal PVA FRCCs with no recycled materials. To evaluate mechanical properties of the FRCCs, compressive, flexural and direct tensile tests were conducted. In addition to the test, to calculate amount of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) emission at the stage of manufacturing the FRCCs, life cycle inventory data base (LCI DB) were referenced from domestic and Japan. From the test results, the mechanical properties such as compressive, flexural and direct tensile strengths were decreased as the replacement ratio of recycled materials increased. And it was determined that the amount of $CO_2$ emission was reduced for the specimens with higher water-binder ratio (W/B) and replacement ratios. It was also found that binder intensity ($B_i$) value was higher as replacement ratio of fly ash (FA) increased. This result means that larger amount of FA is need to deliver one unit of a given performance indicator (1 MPa of strength) of FRCCs compared to that of ordinary portland cement (OPC). As a result, it could be concluded that FRCCs with W/B 45% replaced by FA 25% and recycled sand (RS) 25% is desirable for both target performance and $CO_2$ emission.

  • Fiber is an important ingredient in strain-hardening cementitious composite (SHCC), which can control fracture of cementitious composite by bridging action. The properties of reinforcing fiber, as tensile strength, aspect ratio and elastic modulus, have great effect on the fracture behavior of SHCC. To apply SHCC to structural member, SHCC must have economical efficiency and workability as well as own excellent tensile performance. For these purposes, four-point bending and direct tensile tests on SHCC with only hybrid synthetic fibers, total fiber volume fraction, $V_f$, is 1.5%, are carried out. The research emphasis is on the mechanical properties of SHCC made in Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Polyethylene (PE) fibers, and how this affects the composite property, and ultimately its strain-hardening performance. Also, effect of hybrid type and water-cement ratio on the behavior of SHCC was evaluated in this paper.

  • Various ductile fiber reinforced cement composite(DFRCC) including large quantities of PVA fiber or steel fiber have been developed recently and studies to find applications in diverse domains are currently conducted actively. Regard to economical efficiency, DFRCC becomes competitive when applied as special elements and repair material with small quantities rather than the casting of large volume for the main body of structures in field. The authors have developed FRP-DFRCC composite slab for bridges and a wet spraying repair technique using DFRCC. In case of the application on FRP-DFRCC composite slab, it was found that there was no problems the structure and durability of it after passed 3 months. And in case of the application on the application of the deteriorated sewage box that passed 20 years, it was found that there was no difference the repair performance between domestic PVA fiber and the Japan. Therefore, DFRCC using PVA fiber, the concrete structures can be increased to performance and secured the economical efficiency.

  • This paper reports on the cracking mitigation and flexural behavior experimentally observed in concrete prisms layered with strain-hardening cement composites (SHCCs) which is micro-mechanically designed cement composite and exhibits pseudo tensile strain-hardening behavior accompanied by multiple cracking while using a moderate amount of fiber, typically less than 2 percent in term of fiber volume fraction. In this study, SHCC is reinforced with 1.3 percent polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and 0.20 percent polyethylene (PE) in volume fraction. Tests were conducted using $100{\times}100{\times}400mm$ long prisms supported over a simply supported span of 350mm. The four point load was applied using MTS servo control machine. The thickness patched with SHCC is the main variable for this study. Experimental study shows that when subject to monotonic flexural loading, the SHCC layered repair system showed 2.7 - 4.2 times increased load carrying capacity, and mitigated cracking damage of concrete beams layered with SHCC compared with plain concrete beams.

  • In this study, the resistance of various reinforced concrete (RC) slabs subjected to contact detonation was assessed. In order to enhance the blast resistance, fibers and external FRP sheets were reinforced to RC slabs. In the experiment, the $2,000{\times}1,000{\times}100mm$ sized RC slabs were fabricated using normal concrete (NC), steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC), polyvinyl alcohol fiber reinforced cementitious composite (PVA FRCC), and ultra-high performance cementitious composites (UHPCC). The damage levels of RC slabs subjected to contact detonation were evaluated by measuring the diameter and depth of crater, spall and breach. The experimental results were compared to the analyzed data using LS-DYNA program and three different prediction equations. The diameter and depth of crater, spall and breach were able to be predicted using LS-DYNA program approximately. The damage process of RC slabs under blast load was also well expressed. Three prediction equations suggested by other researchers had limitations to apply in terms of empirical approaches, therefore it needs further research to set more analytical considerations.

  • LEFC(Light Emotion Friendly Conceret) was developed in Korea with demands of esthentic requirements in line with the recent developmental trend of concrete technology. The LEFC is made by inserting transparent transparent rods, and this forms a heterogeneous structure in the concrete matrix causing the LEFC substrate to crack due low adhesion between the rod and the cement. In this study, as a way to strengthen the bonding to the rod inserted in the LEFC, high strength vinylon fibers of varying mixture ratios were applied and physical properties were tested accordingly. To study the effect of different spacing of the bars on the LEFC, physical property testing was conducted on respective specimens with two different diameters (5mm, 10mm) inserted in different intervals of spacing (10mm, 15mm, and 20mm).

But SHCC has serious problem as drying shrinkage because silica powder is used to make SHCC in order to improve bond strength between reinforcing fibers and cement matrix. Therefore, curing method (period and temperature) is very important for SHCC to show high tensile performance. a variety of experiments have being performed to access the performance of SHCC recently. This research emphasis is on the mechanical properties of SHCC made in Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), Polyethylene (PE) fibers and steel cord (SC), and how curing method affects the composite property, and ultimately its strain-hardening performance.
