Shape memory polyurethane (SMPU), grafted with a fluorescent dye (Rhodamine, Mehylene violet, or Fluorescein) through an allophanate linking, was tested for the fluorescence and the shape recovery effect. The main chain of SMPU was composed of 4,4'-methylenebis(phenylisocyanate) (MDI), poly(tetramethyleneglycol) (PTMG), and 1,4-butanediol (BD), and a fluorescent dye was connected through a second MDI linked to the carbamate moiety of the main chain. Three series of SMPU, differing according to their dye content, were prepared to compare their shape recovery and fluorescence properties. In tensile mechanical property, maximum stress increased up to 350% compared to the linear SMPU, and strain remained above 2000%. Shape recovery went to as high as 97%, and remained almost same after repetitive shape recovery test cycles. Finally, the fluorescence emission of SMPU was demonstrated in the luminescence spectrum and fluorescent light emission pictures. In addition, the response of SMPU to external stimuli such as metal ions was investigated.

Weatherstrip coatings of urethane and silicon type which are fit to EPDM and thermoplastic materials are used in sealing systems for automotive applications for noise reduction and high slip characteristics for external applications, respectively. Polyurethane binder was successfully synthesized from poly(butyladiphate)diol (PBAD), poly(tetramethylene)glycol (PTMG) and isocyanate as starting materials. Then, polyurethane coating agents were prepared by using various additives. To investigate effects of segment types on the abrasion resistance of polyurethane coating agents, thin films based on polyurethane coating materials were fabricated. With increasing the amount of hard segment in the coating agent, abrasion resistance, modulus and tensile strength of the coating films were improved, but the elongation of the coating films was decreased.
Silica-polyurethane hybrid breathable films were prepared and their breathabilities were assessed. Appropriately aggregated silica was prepared through sol-gel reaction of water glass and its particle size ranged 360~500nm. The polyurethane dispersion was prepared by the reaction of isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI) as diisocyanate and polytetramethylene glycol(PTMG) and dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA) as polyol, particle size ranging 30~120nm. The reaction between isocyanate and hydroxyl group to form urethane bonding was checked by the intensity of the stretch peak of isocyanate at $2270cm^{-1}$ in the FT-IR. The silica was incorporated into polyurethane dispersion and casted into film. It was shown that the incorporated silica(1~5wt.%) increased water vapour permeability of the films by 30~100%, and decreased the hydrostatic pressure by 10~40%. From the results, it could be concluded that the appropriate hybridization of silica can increase the breathability of polyurethane dispersion film, while minimizing the loss of hydrostatic pressure.
As a novel hydrophobic monomer, polytetrahydrofuran diacrylate (PTMGDA) was synthesized by the esterification reaction between polyethylene tetrahydrofuran (PTMG) and acryloyl chloride (AC). In situ free radical polymerization reaction method was utilized to fabricate poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-PTMGDA-poly(ethylene oxide) dimethacrylate (PEGMA) ulrafiltration (UF) membranes. The performances of PVDF-PTMGDA-PEGMA UF membranes in terms of morphologies, mechanical properties, separation properties and hydrophilicities were investigated. The introduction of the PTMGDA-PEGMA dopants not only increased the membranes' pure water flux, but also improved their mechanical properties and the dynamic contact angles. The addition of the PTMGDA/PEGMA dopants led to the formation of the finger-like structure in the membrane bulk. With the increase concentration of PTMGDA/PEGMA dopants, the porosity and the mean effective pore size increased. Those performances were coincide with the physicochemical properties of the casting solutions.
Urethane-acrylate propelymers for secondary coating of optical fiber and high - performance material were prepared from the 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate(MDI), poly(tetramethylene oxide)glycol(PTMG, Mw 650 or 1000), 1,6-hexanediol(HD), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate(HEA), and dibutyltin dilaurate as a catalyst. UV-Curable polyurethane acrylates were formulated from the urethane-acrylate prepolymers, three types of reactive diluents(DTs) having mono-, di-, and trifunctional-phenoxyethyl acrylate(PEA), hexanediol diacrylate(HDDA), and trimethylolpropane triacrylate(TMPTA), and 1-hydtoxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone(Irgacure 184) as a photoinitiator. The UV-cured films of polyurethane acrylates were obtained by curing using a medium-pressure mercury lamp(U W/cm, $\lambda_{max}=365\;nm)$. In this work, the effects of molecular weights of polyol and diol with low molecular weight into polymer chain on mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of UV-cured polyurethane acrylates were studied. The structure and properties of the films obtained from the UV photopolymerization of urethane-acrylate prepolymer were investigated by FT-IR spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical measurement, tensile testing, and X-ray diffractometry.
A series of crosslinkable, waterborne polyurethanes (I-WBPUs) were prepared by in-situ polymerization using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI)/poly(tetramethylene oxide) glycol (PTMG, $M_n$=2,000)/dimethylol propionic acid (DMPA)/ethylene diamine (EDA)/triethylamine (TEA)/aminoplast[hexakis(methoxymethyl)melamine (HMMM)] as a crosslinking agent. Typical crosslinkable, waterborne polyurethanes (B-WBPUs) blended from WBPU dispersion and aqueous HMMM solution was also prepared to compare with the I-WBPUs. The crosslinking reaction between WBPU and HMMM was verified using FTIR and XPS analysis. The effect of the HMMM contents on the dynamic mechanical thermal, thermal, mechanical, and adhesion properties of the I-WBPU and B-WBPU films were investigated. The storage modulus(E'), glass transition temperatures of the soft segment ($T_{gs}$) and the amorphous regions of higher order ($T_{gh}$), melting temperature ($T_m$), integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT), residual weight, $T_{10%}$ and $T_{50%}$ (the temperature where 10 and 50% weight loss occurred), tensile strength, initial modulus, hardness, and adhesive strength of both I-WBPU and B-WBPU systems increased with increasing HMMM content. However, these properties of the I-WBPU system were higher than those of the B-WBPU system at the same HMMM content. These results confirmed the in-situ polymerization used in this study to be a more effective method to improve the properties of the WBPU materials compared to the simple blending process.
Wet polyurethane resin was synthesized by using polytrimethylene ether glycol prepared from 1,3-propanediol produced by fermentation from corn sugar as bio polyol and polyether-polyol(PTMG). Physical properties and cell characteristics by wet coagulation were investigated using the synthesized wet polyurethane resin. The tensile strength of wet polyurethane resin decreased with increasing content of bio polyol as copolymer polyol, but it tended to increase elongation at break and tear strength. As a result of thermal characteristic analysis, it was found that the glass transition temperature was slightly increased as the content of bio polyol increased. As a result of comparing the cell characteristics by the wet coagulation method, it was found that the shape of the cell was good when the ether polyol and the bio polyol were used alone.
Fluorine modified diisocyanate(FMD) was synthesized from tris(6-isocyanatohexyl)isocyanurate(TIHI) and N-ethyl-N-2-hydroxyethyl-perfluorooctanesulfonamide(HFA). Fluorine modified polyurethane(FMPU) was also synthesized from FMD and poly(tetramethylene) glycol(PTMG). Modified polyurethanes were made by blending FMPU into the polyester type base polyurethane(BPU). Surface and thermal properties of the blended BPU film was measured by contact angle measurement and DSC. As the amounts of FMPU was increased from 0 wt % to 1 wt %, the surface energy was dramatically decreased from 47.82 dyne/cm to 17.64 dyne/cm. But we observed little change of the contact angle with further increase in the amount of the FMPU up to 10 wt %. The data meant that the surface of the blended polyurethanes was hydrophobic due to the surface arrangement of the fluorine containing moiety in FMPU. Phase separation was induced by the incompatibility of FMPU and BPU for the samples having over 5 wt % of FMPU. The thermal analysis data of these samples showed the thermal behavior of the FMPU itself.
