  • This paper presents the experimental results on the development length of FRP tendons by direct pullout test. Two types of FRP tendons, namely, CFCC tendon and KICT tendon, and PS tendon were investigated. The development length defined as the minimum embedment length required to develop the ultimate tensile strength was suggested using the test results. It was found that the development length from the direct pullout test was greater than those of various standards. This may result from the fact that the wedge effect does not exist because there is no prestressing force in the direct pullout test. Further study and experiment are necessary to derive the reasonable development length for FRP tendon.

  • Recently, researches about fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) which has excellent durability, corrosion resistance, and tensile strength as a substitution material to steel tendon have been actively pursued. This study is performed to examine FRP tendon used prestressed beam's safety under service load. The specimen was a prestressed concrete beam with internal bonded FRP tendon. In order to compare the member fatigue capacity, a control specimen of a prestressed concrete beam with ordinary steel tendon was tested. A fatigue load was applied at a load range of 60%, 70%, and 80% of the 40% ultimate load, which was obtained though a static test. The fatigue load was applied as a 1~3 Hz sine wave with 4 point loading setup. Fatigue load with maximum 1 million cycles was applied. The specimen applied with a load ranging between 40~60% did not show a fatigue failure until 1 million cycles. However, it was found that horizontal cracks in the direction of tendons were found and bond force between the tendon and concrete was degraded as the load cycles increased. This fatigue study showed that the prestressed concrete beam using FRP tendon was safe under a fatigue load within a service load range. Fatigue strength of the specimen with FRP and steel tendon after 1 million cycles was 69.2% and 59.8% of the prestressed concrete beam's static strength, respectively.

  • The problems associated with the continuous method of a domestically improved prestressed concrete (PSC) girder and the bending moment of a continuous tendon were studied. Based on the results, a continuous tendon model was proposed that can resist the negative bending moment of an intergirder. This model lowers the anchorage of the continuous tendon as far as possible under the girder, and extends the tendon section arranged under the girder. This method reduces the PS's bending moment in the middle of the span, but maximizes it in the intergirder. This continuous tendon model can offer a suitable method for continuity before manufacturing a composite, which requires a higher design bending moment in the intergirder than in the middle of the span.

  • In this paper, we have verified a low-voltage EM(elasto-magnetic) sensing technique for tensile force management of PSC(prestressed concrete) internal tendon in order to apply the technique to actual construction sites where stable power supply is difficult. From observation of past domestic and overseas PSC structural accident cases, it was found that PS tension is very important to maintain structural stability. In this paper, we have tried to measure the tensile force from a magnetic hysteresis curve through EM sensors according to voltage value by using relation between magnetostriction and stress of ferromagnetic material based on elastic-magnetic theory. For this purpose, EM sensor of double cylindrical coil type was fabricated and tensile force test equipment for PS tendon using hydraulic tensioning device was constructed. The experiment was conducted to confirm relationship between changes of permeability and tensile force from the measurement results of the maximum / minimum voltage amount. The change of magnetic hysteresis curve with magnitude of tensile force was also measured by reducing amount of voltage step by step. As a result, the slope of estimation equation in accordance with magnitude of magnetic field decreases with the voltage reduction. But it was confirmed a similar pattern of change of magnetic permeability for the magnetic hysteresis loop. So, in this study, it is considered that it is possible to manage the tensions of PSC internal tendon using EM sensing technique in low-voltage state.

  • Corrosion of prestressing tendons and wire fractures in grouted post-tensioned prestressed concrete bridges have been considered as a serious safety problem. In bridge evaluation the condition of prestressing tendons should be inspected, and if corroded tendons are found, the loss of tendon area should be included when we calculate the ultimate strength. In the previous study, it was evaluated that continuous acoustic monitoring techniques could be considered as a reliable non-destructive method for detecting wire fractures of fully grouted post-tensioned prestressing tendons. In the present study, an experimental test was performed for detecting wire fractures of post-tensioned prestressing tendons which are prestressed lower than current design level. A 10 m prestressed concrete beam was fabricated, which included two tendons prestressed 66 percentage and 40 percentage of tensile strength, respectively. The corrosion of two tendons was induced by an accelerated corrosion equipment and the test beam was monitored by using seven acoustic sensors and a continuous acoustic monitoring system. From each prestressing tendon, two acoustic signals of wire fractures were successfully detected and source locations were estimated within 20 mm error. Based on the test results, it is considered that continuous acoustic monitoring techniques can be applied to detect low-prestressed wire fracture in fully grouted post-tensioned prestressed concrete beams.

  • The external, unbonded prestressed concrete(PSC) members exhibit very different structural behavior from that of internal bonded PSC members because of eccentricity change and slip occurrence during loading process. The purpose of the present study is to propose the ultimate failure stresses of prestressing (PS) steels for those external unbonded PSC members. To this end, a comprehensive analysis has been made using the nonlinear finite element analysis program developed recently for external unbonded PSC members by authors. A series of major influencing variables have been included in the analysis. It was found that the span-depth ratio, neutral axis depth-effective depth ratio, load geometry, amount of ordinary steel, and prestressing steel ration have great influence for the ultimate failue stress of PS steel is preposed and is compared with experimental dat as well as existing formulas for internal unbonded members. The Comparison indicates that the proposed equation agrees relatively well with experimental data and that existing formulas including ACI and AASHTO equations show some discrepancies from experimental ones. The present study allows more realistic analysis and design of prestressed concrete structures with external unbonded tendons.

  • In this study, the static load test and the load transfer test were carried out to evaluate the structural performance of the circular anchorage proposed by the previous study. Specimens were fabricated according to KCI-PS101 and ETAG 013. As a result of the static load test, it was verified that the displacement of the wedge and the strand was kept constant when the tensile force of 80% of the nominal strength of the strand was applied. In the load transfer test, it was confirmed that all the specimens satisfied the stabilization formula of KCI-PS101 and ETAG 013. Post-tensioned one-way slab with circular anchorage were fabricated to evaluate the flexural behavior. All specimens exhibited the same flexural behavior and maximum load. However, the specimen with circular anchorage were advantageous than the rectangular anchorage one in terms of crack control of the anchorage zone.

  • The prestressing force introduced to the tendon in pretensioned concrete members is transferred by direct bond between tendon and concrete, which requires a proper estimation of stress transfer length. The use of pretensiond and/or precast members with UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) may give many advantages in quality control. This paper presents an experiment to estimate the stress transfer length of UHPC for various compressive strength levels of UHPC, cover depths, diameters of tendons and tensioning forces. According to the result of this experiment, the stress transfer length of UHPC member is much reduced comparing that of normal strength concrete. The reduction in stress transfer length of UHPC may come from the high bond strength capacity of UHPC. The transfer lengths obtained from this experiment are compared to those in current design code and a new formula is proposed.

  • CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced polymer) tendons can be used as an alternative to solve the corrosion problem of steel tendons. Material properties of CFRP tendons such as bond strength, transfer length, and development length should be determined in order to apply to concrete structures. First of all, in case of application for pretension concrete members with CFRP tendons, transfer length is an important factor. A total of 9 beams have been cast to determine transfer length and development length of domestic CFRP tendon in this paper. Test results revealed that transfer length of the prestressing 25% and 50% are 34D, 55D respectively. Also, transfer length has increased as the prestressing force has increased. A change was observed in transfer length of developed CFRP tendon after 9 weeks. ${\alpha}_t$ of developed CFRP tendon was 2.3 similar to the steel strand.
