Generally, the vibration characteristics of refractory ceramics are identified by assuming them as isotropic materials. However, in practice, refractory ceramics exhibit anisotropic properties as they are manufactured by pressing ceramic powders along a particular direction. Therefore, in this research, the frequency responses of a refractory ceramic brick along its width, length, and height directions were acquired using finite element analysis by assuming that the ceramics had tetragonal symmetry in their material properties. The validity of the numerical analysis results was verified by comparing them with those from experimental measurements. Based on the frequency response, the thicknesses of the refractory brick along three different directions were estimated using the impact-echo technique. The maximum difference between the estimated and actual thicknesses was observed to be less than 5 %. This result confirms the effectiveness of the impact-echo technique along with anisotropic property characterization to evaluate the thickness of the refractory ceramic.

The MUSLE was utilized in this study to estimate soil erosion using daily precipitation which was main influential factor in soil loss estimation. Various scenarios were simulated to evaluate how transition of slope, agricultural products and precipitation could affect soil loss in the field. It was found that slope was the most affecting factor in soil loss estimation. Especially 1.8 times the soil loss was expected with potato at 45% slope compared with codonopsis at same slope with MUSLE model. Fortunately, farmers had planted codonopsis at this slope to reduce soil erosion from this steep slope. As shown in this study, the MUSLE method could be utilized to determine optimum crop type for each field with various slope conditions to minimize soil erosion. This approach utilized in this study could be applied to other agricultural watersheds to evaluate various soil erosion conditions.

This paper proposes a new composite deckplate system reinforced with inverted triangular truss girders(called 'D Deck'), which does not require the use of temporary supports at construction stage. The proposed system retains increased stiffness and strength while keeping the absolute floor height change to a minimum level and can be utilized as floor systems of various types beam members such as the conventional wide-flange and U-shaped composite beams. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, five specimens with a span of 5.5 m were fabricated and tested under field loading conditions consisting of several intermediate steps. The load-deflection curves of each specimen were plotted and compared with the nonlinear three-dimensional finite element analysis results. The comparison showed that the effective load sharing between the truss girders and floor deck occurs and the maximum deflection under construction stage loading is well below the limit estimated by the provisions in Korea Building Code.
Many kinds of alternative fuels such as biodiesel, ethanol, methanol, and natural gas have been developed in order to overcome the limited deposits in fossil fuels. In some cases, the alternative fuels have been reported to cause degrade materials. The corrosion rates of metals were measured by immersion test, a kind of time consuming test because low conductivity of these fuels was not allowed to employ electrochemical tests. With twin two-electrode cell newly designed for the study, however, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test was successfully applied to evaluation of the corrosion resistance ($R_p$) of zinc, iron, aluminum, and its alloys in an oxidized biodiesel and gasoline/ethanol solutions and the corrosion resistance from EIS was compared with the corrosion rate from immersion test. In biodiesel, $R_p$ increased in the order of zinc, iron, and aluminum, which agreed with the corrosion resistance measured from immersion test. In addition, on aluminum showing the best corrosion resistance ($R_p$), the effect of magnesium as an alloying element was evaluated in gasoline/ethanol solutions as well as the oxidized biodiesel. $R_p$ increased with addition of magnesium in gasoline/ethanol solutions containing chloride and the oxidized biodiesel. In the mean while, in gasoline/ethanol solutions containing formic acid, Al-Mg alloy added 1% magnesium had the highest $R_p$ and the further addition of magnesium decreased $R_p$. It can be explained with the fact that the addition of more than 1% magnesium increases the passive current density of Al-Mg alloys.

This paper concerns the deformation behavior of tunnels crossing weak zone during excavation. A three dimensional finite element model was adopted in order to conduct a parametric study on the orientation of weaj zone in terms of strike and dip angle relative to the tunnel longitudinal axis. The results of the analyses were then analyzed so that the tunnel displacements in terms of the ratios between the crown settlement and springline displacement can be related to the orientation of the weak zone. The results indicate that the displacement ratios between the tunnel crown and springline tend to quantitatively change when a weak zone exists near or ahead of the tunnel suggesting that the displacement ratios can be effectively used to predict the weak zone during tunnelling. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.

The roll coating process is well-known for completely replacement coating system with an existing wet paint process for automotive which has low productivity and is not environment-friendly process. It is very important to evaluate the curing behavior, corrosion resistance and processing property as well as rheological behavior in order to realize a film flexibility and hardness simultaneously. In this study, we have synthesized the polyester resin modified with hydroxyl values and molecular weight to apply the pre-painted system, and then evaluated the curing behavior, deep drawing, tensile strength and rheological properties. It was observed that N-0375-40 of 40 (mg KOH/mol) hydroxyl values showed the most suitable for flexibility, film hardness, and curing behavior.

In this paper, the effects of nonlinear soft clay on dynamic embedment of offshore pipeline were investigated. Seabed embedment by pipe-soil interactions has impacts on the structural boundary conditions for various subsea structures such as pipeline, riser, pile, and many other systems. A number of studies have been performed to estimate real soil behavior, but their estimation of seabed embedment has not been fully identified and there are still many uncertainties. In this regards, comparison of embedment between field survey and existing empirical models has been performed to identify uncertainties and investigate the effect of nonlinear soil parameter on dynamic embedment. From the comparison, it is found that the dynamic embedment with installation effects based on nonlinear soil model have an influence on seabed embedment. Therefore, the pipe embedment under dynamic condition by nonlinear parameters of soil models was investigated by Dynamic Embedment Factor (DEF) concept, which is defined as the ratio of the dynamic and static embedment of pipeline, in order to overcome the gap between field embedment and currently used empirical and numerical formula. Although DEF through various researches is suggested, its range is too wide and it does not consider dynamic laying effect. It is difficult to find critical parameters that are affecting to the embedment result. Therefore, the study on dynamic embedment factor by soft clay parameters of nonlinear soil model was conducted and the sensitivity analyses about parameters of nonlinear soil model were performed as well. The tendency on dynamic embedment factor was found by conducting numerical analyses using OrcaFlex software. It is found that DEF was influenced by shear strength gradient than other factors. The obtained results will be useful to understand the pipe embedment on soft clay seabed for applying offshore pipeline designs such as on-bottom stability and free span analyses.

Fluorine-doping on the $Li_{1+x}Mn_{1.9-x}Al_{0.1}O_4$ spinel cathode materials is found to alter crystal shape, and enhance initial interfacial reactivity and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, leading to improved initial coulombic efficiency in the voltage region of 3.3-4.3 V vs. Li/$Li^+$ in the room temperature electrolyte of 1 M $LiPF_6$/EC:EMC. SEM imaging reveals that the facetting on higher surface energy plane of (101) is additionally developed at the edges of an octahedron that is predominantly grown with the most thermodynamically stable (111) plane, which enhances interfacial reactivity. Fluorine-doping also increases the amount of interfacially reactive $Mn^{3+}$ on both bulk and surface for charge neutrality. Enhanced interfacial reactivity by fluorine-doping attributes instant formation of a stable SEI layer and improved initial cyclic efficiency. The data contribute to a basic understanding of the impacts of composition on material properties and cycling behavior of spinel-based cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
