A Study for Determining the Rehabilitation Method Group using NHPCI on Asphalt Concrete Pavement of National Highway (국도 아스팔트 포장의 NHPCI(National Highway Pavement Condition Index)를 활용한 보수공법그룹 결정에 관한 연구)

  • PURPOSES : The PMS(Pavement Management System) has been utilized in order to efficiently allocate the limited budget for the maintenance of national highway system. In the PMS of national highway, surface pavement condition is evaluated by using the VI (Visual Index). However, the VI is determined only by considering the cracking rate (%) and rut depth (mm), which is not reflecting the IRI (International Roughness Index) that is known as an important factor of pavement performance. In this study, the NHPCI (National Highway Pavement Condition Index) which includes the cracking rate (%), rut depth (mm), and IRI (m/km) is suggested for determining the rehabilitation methods group. METHODS : First, the rehabilitation methods performed between 2008 and 2010 on the national highway is classified and then, NHPCI is determined for each rehabilitation method. Next, the NHPCI for each rehabilitation method is grouped through the interval estimation of the population mean and T-test analysis. RESULTS : According to NHPCI range, the rehabilitation methods are divided into four categories: Not Required, Preventive Maintenance, Overlay Treatment (with or without cutting), and Full-scale Treatment (i.e., reconstruction). CONCLUSIONS : Based on this study, it is recommended that the appropriate NHPCI range should be determined through the combination of the rehabilitation categories and Decision Procedure of Pavement Distress Condition Visual Index.

  • Currently the reasonability of threshold values for rutting and cracking does not clearly defined at the Pavement Rehabilitation Decision Tree on national highway PMS(Pavement Management System). The goal of this study is to provide the reasonable threshold values for the national highway asphalt concrete pavement rehabilitation. To achieve this goal, test section that represents typical asphalt concrete pavement of national highway was selected and pavement export were participated. Pavement condition survey has been conducted and pavement performance data at the selected roadway section were analyzed. From this study, reasonable threshold values of Pavement Rehabilitation Decision Tree were suggested based on the pavement expert's engineering judgement. In terms of crack repairs, the application of overlay after cutting is required to deteriorated area where existing crack ratio is over 35% and just overlay is required to where crack ratio is over 20%. On rutting, rut depth over 13mm is required to overlay after cutting and rut depth over 10mm is just needed to overlay.

  • National highway is one of the social infrastructures that continue to be managed in order to serve their full functions. The national highway has been managed by the Pavement Management System (PMS) until now. The PMS manages the highway as a way of facility maintenance and maximizes the service life of the highway with minimum cost. The cost is evaluated mainly with a facility manager's perspective based on engineering judgment. People's needs of quality of life have been increased as their income level is rising and naturally the opinion of citizen as a taxpayer plays an important role in determining national policy. Therefore, the contentment of a user's perspective was the starting point of addressing these needs. The Level of Service began to be used as a measure for the evaluation of the user's perspective. In this thesis we would like to design an application and a data architecture for a pavement asset management system and to show how it meets the requirements of KTAM-40 Systems.

  • Pavement distresses are one of the most important data for pavement management systems. Inspection machines and its related programs have been used for operating tools in PMS developed in advanced countries. In Korea imported machines and programs for the length price ale utilized to get information of pavement condition from the field This study is launched for developing the program which can detect cracks on asphalt pavement due to many drawbacks in current PMS operation such as improper maintenance work and long resting period when it was broken. The focus of this study is to define principles to analyze pavement surface with digital image processing techniques, to test property of pavement images and to suggest an algorithm that reduces noises at test. To test images, the camera attached on the Automatic Road Analyser(ARAN) was used. Through the FFT images, histogram and statistical values of pavement images, it was found that the images had many noises with high-frequency components against general images, and it was difficult to subdivide pavement images into background or crack. Through several testing with various filters for noise reduction a 3X3 median filter was suggested to reduce noises effectively.

  • Pavement Management System has a special purpose that the rehabilitation strategy applied on pavement should be executable in view of technical and economical point after new pavement open to the traffic. To achieve that purpose, a reliable pavement performance prediction model should be embeded in the system. The object of this study is to develop a probabilistic pavement performance prediction model for evaluating asphalt pavements based on the Markov chain concept. In this paper, methodology of the Markov chain modeling principle is explained, and the application of this model to asphalt pavement is described. As the results, transition matrics for predicting asphalt pavement performance are obtained, and also performance life is estimated quantitatively by this system.

  • The management of existing airfield pavement information has currently become difficult and the maintenance cost has increased over time due to the long-term performance. It is needed to develop the method for effective budget allocation and systematic airfield pavement management services. The objectives of this paper are to introduce Micro PAVER, one of the popular pavement management systems, into our management system and customize Micro PAVER based on our environment and pavement management level. This study focused on the analysis on logics and structures of Micro PAVER and customization of important parts in the program using the existing pavement evaluation data and survey method. Customized items selected in this study included the pavement deterioration prediction models, critical PCI, maintenance cost by PCI, maintenance or rehabilitation method and unit cost, and PCI rank.

  • While the pavement design is based on mechanical property such dynamic elastic modulus, the quality of highway subgrade during construction is controled by the optimum moisture content(OMC) and maximum dry density(${\gamma}$$\_$dmax/). However, since the quality control based on the OMC and maximum dry density does not consider the mechanical characteristics, there is a conceptional gap between design and PMS(pavement management system). Therefore, it is necessary to develope a new qualify control system using mechanical property for highway construction in more rational way. To achieve this goal, it is planned to perform various laboratory tests to collect mechanical properties of subgrade soil samples from several highway construction sites and to propose the relationship between dry unit weight (or OMC) and mechanical parameters. In this paper, the experimental data so far obtained are presented and analyzed. In addition, further research plan is presented and discussed.

  • Most national highways are paved with asphalt. Since increased traffic volume and high temperature have reduced the service life of pavements, modified asphalt pavements or stone mastic asphalt (SMA) have gradually been adopted. However, pavement engineers have difficulty to select pavement types due to lack of standard specifications for these new pavement types. In this study, service lives of general asphalt pavements based on traffic volume were analyzed using the inventory data of pavement management system (PMS) collected for last 10 years. The results showed 9.5 and 5.6 year average service lives for new constructed pavements and overlays, respectively. The traffic volumes for the design life of 10 years was presented based on confidence levels using service life distributions of current pavements. For the confidence level of 90%, 2,300 ESAL was obtained; 1,500 ESAL for the confidence level of 80%. This indicates that modified asphalt pavements should be considered for sections with the higher traffic volume.

  • 산업과 정보통신 기술의 발전으로 토목분야도 GIS, DBMS 등 다양한 정보시스템을 도입하여 국가 발전의 선구자 역할을 주도 하고 있다. 토목분야 중에서 우리 생활과 밀접한 관계가 있는 도로 포장관리시스템(PMS)에도 보다 효율적이고 체계적인 도로포장 관리를 위해 GIS 및 DBMS를 운용하고 있다. 전국 일반국도 포장상태 조사 및 자료 검증의 경우 DBMS를 통해 포장 상태 산출과 평가 신뢰성이 확보되어 효율적 예산 배치 및 정확한 포장상태 관리의 기반이 된다. 본 논문에서는 GIS 기반의 전국 일반 국도 포장상태 조사 지점 관리 및 자료 검증 시스템 개발에 대하여 기술하고자 한다.
