  • The ~1540 nm Er$^{3+}$ photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra of Er-implanted Mg-codoped GaN (GaN:Er+Mg) exhibit that the excitation efficiency of a specific Er$^{3+}$ center among different Er$^{3+}$ centers existing in Er-implanted GaN is selectively enhanced, compared to Er-implanted undoped GaN (GaN:Er). In GaN:Er+Mg, the 1540 nm PL peaks characteristic of the so-called "violet-pumped" Er$^{3+}$ center and the ~2.8-3.4 eV (violet) PLE band are significantly strengthened by the Mg-doping. The intra-f absorption PLE bands associated with this "violet-pumped" center are also enhanced by this doping. The 1540 nm PL peaks originating from the violet-pumped center dominate the above-gap-excited Er$^{3+}$ PL spectrum of GaN:Er+Mg, whereas it was unobservable under above-gap excitation in GaN:Er. All of these results indicate that Mg doping increases the efficiency of trap-mediated excitation of Er$^{3+}$ emission in Er-implanted GaN.planted GaN.

  • We have investigated the characteristics of hydrogen (H) plasma treated quantum dot infrared photodetectors (QDIPs). The structure used in this study consists of 3 stacked, self assembled $In_{0.5}Ga_{0.5}As/GaAs$ QD layer separated by GaAs barrier layers that were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Optical characteristics of QDIPs, such as photoluminescence (PL) spectra and photocurrent spectra, have been studied and compared with each other for the as grown and H plasma treated QDIPs. H plasma treatment, resulted in the splitting of PL peak, which can be attributed to the redistribution of the size of QDs. The activation energies estimated from the temperature dependence of integrated PL intensity for as grown and H plasma treated QDIPs are found to be in good agreement with those determined from corresponding peaks of photocurrent spectra. It is also noted that photocurrent is detected up to 130 K for the H plasma treated QDIP, suggesting the future possibility for the development of infrared photodetectors with high temperature operation.

  • ZnSe and ZnS:Mn nanocrystals were synthesized via the thermal decomposition of their corresponding organometallic precursors in a hot coordinating solvent (TOP/TOPO) mixture. The organic surface capping agents were substituted with EDTA molecules to impart hydrophilic surface properties to the resulting nanocrystals. The optical properties of the water-dispersible nanocrystals were analyzed by UV-visible and room temperature solution photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The solution PL spectra revealed emission peaks at 390 (ZnSe-EDTA) and 597 (ZnS:Mn-EDTA) nm with PL efficiencies of 4.0 (former) and 2.4% (latter), respectively. Two-photon spectra were obtained by fixing the excitation light source wavelengths at 616 nm (ZnSe-EDTA) and 560 nm (ZnS:Mn-EDTA). The emission peaks appeared at the same positions to that of the PL spectra but with lower peak intensity. In addition, the morphology and sizes of the nanocrystals were estimated from the corresponding HR-TEM images. The measured average particle sizes were 5.4 nm (ZnSe-EDTA) with a standard deviation of 1.2 nm, and 4.7 nm (ZnS:Mn-EDTA) with a standard deviation of 0.8 nm, respectively.

  • PR spectra of MBE grown AlGaAs/GaAs MQW have been measured at room temperature using the He-Ne laser and the Ar laser as the pump source. We have observed various subband transition peaks and PR spectra were fitted to standard analytic line shape. Above that results, obtained us transition energy from n=1 conduction band to heavy hole(C1-H1) and to light hole(C1-L1) subband. Photoluminescence(PL) at room temperature showed main peak with a shoulder. Good agreement between PL and PR measured n=1 intersubband transition energies was confirmed that PL main peak with a shoulder is associated with the C1-H1, C1-L1 transition. Additionally, we have calculated the C1-H1 and C1-L1 intersubband energy within envelope function approximation(EFA).

  • This paper reports on photoluminescence (PL), luminescence decay curves, and compositional analysis of porous silicon(PS) which is aged under air ambient by Fourier transform infrared vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR) and by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Porous silicos which has been aged under air ambient yields two PL band structures, i.e. blue/violet PL and red PL. The evolution of a blue/violet band is pronounced, especially for thin PS film which is prepared in dilute HF solution. The blue/violet PL band has been observed initially to increrase rapidly with aging, then saturated with further atmospheric aging. The ambient air aged PS exhibits a fast decay time of sub-nanosecond at room temperature and shows appreciably faster decay time than that at 20K. Atmospheric aging of this thin blue/violet luminescing PS yield non-stoichiometric oxide judging from the vibrational spectra of Si-O and AES analysis.

  • ZnO, ZnO: Cu, Ga, and ZnO: Cu, Ga, Ag thin films were obtained by oxidization of ZnS and ZnS: Cu, Ga films deposited onto glass substrates by electron-beam evaporation from ZnS and ZnS: Cu, Ga targets and from ZnS: Cu, Ga film additionally doped with Ag by the closed space sublimation technique at atmospheric pressure. The film thickness was about $1{\mu}m$. The oxidation was carried out at $600-650^{\circ}C$ in air or in an atmosphere containing water vapor. Structural characteristics were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the films were measured at 30-300 K using the excitation wavelengths of 337, 405 and 457.9 nm. As-deposited ZnS and ZnS: Cu, Ga films had cubic structure. The oxidation of the doped films in air or in water vapors led to complete ZnO phase transition. XRD and AFM studies showed that the grain sizes of oxidized films at wet annealing were larger than of the films after dry annealing. As-deposited doped and undoped ZnS thin films did not emit PL. Shape and intensity of the PL emission depended on doping and oxidation conditions. Emission intensity of the films annealed in water vapors was higher than of the films annealed in the air. PL of ZnO: Cu, Ga films excited by 337 nm wavelength exhibits UV (380 nm) and green emission (500 nm). PL spectra at 300 and 30 K excited by 457.9 and 405 nm wavelengths consisted of two bands - the green band at 500 nm and the red band at 650 nm. Location and intensities ratio depended on the preparation conditions.

  • An improved method for the preparation of g-$C_3N_4$ is described. Currently, heating (> $400^{\circ}C$) of urea is the common method used for preparing the g-$C_3N_4$. We have found that sonication of melamine in $HNO_3$ solution, followed by washing with anhydrous ethanol, not only reduce the crystallite size of g-$C_3N_4$ but also facilitate intriguing electronic structure and photoluminescence (PL) properties. Moreover, loading of metal (Pt and Ag) nanoparticles, by applying the borohydride reduction method, has resulted in multicolor-emission from g-$C_3N_4$. With the help of PL spectra and local electronic structure study, at C K-edge, N K-edge, Pt L-edge and Ag K-edge by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), a precise mechanism of tunable luminescence is established. The PL mechanism ascribes the amendments in the transitions, via defect and/or metal states assimilation, between the ${\pi}^*$ states of tris-triazine ring of g-$C_3N_4$ and lone pair states of nitride. It is evidenced that interaction between the C/N 2p and metal 4d/5d orbitals of Ag/Pt has manifested a net detraction in the ${\delta}^*{\rightarrow}LP$ transitions and enhancement in the ${\pi}^*{\rightarrow}LP$ and ${\pi}^*{\rightarrow}{\pi}$ transitions, leading to broad PL spectra from g-$C_3N_4$ organic semiconductor compound.

  • The dependence of photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence itation (PLE) on preparation condi-tions and the aging of porous silicon carbide (PSC) have been investigatted. The fiber size of the material pre-pared under dark-current mode, labele d DCM, was larger than that of the photoassisted (PA)process. The intensity of the PL spectrum for the PA condition was higher than that of the DCM condition. The PA condition giving small fiber size exhibited amore prominent high-energy component but the emission bands of both con-ditionsobserved were rather similar. The origin of the PL may have played an importantrole in the surface defect center introduced by the reaction conditions ofHFatthe surface of the silicon carbide. Selective excita-tion of the PL bandsusingdifferent excitation wavelengths has been used to identify distinct componentswith-in the PL bandwidth. Two main PL bands with peak wavelength of494 and534 nm were clearly resolved. On the other hand, selectivc emission of the PLEbands using different emission wavelengths has been used to identify distinct components within the PLE bandwidth. The higher energy band with peak wavelength of 338 nm and the lower energy bands involving 390,451 and 500 nm were clearly resolved. According to the pro-ionged aging in air, PL spectra appearedasone band, This emission probably originated from states localized to the band-to-band recombination due to the oxidation on the crystallite surface.

  • We investigate the influence of the ambient gas during thermal annealing on the photoluminescence (PL) properties of europium-silicate thin films. The films were fabricated on substrates by using a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering method and subsequent rapid thermal annealing (RTA). The mechanism for the formation of the europium silicates during the annealing process was investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A series of narrow PL spectra from $Eu^{3+}$ ions was observed from the film annealed in $O_2$ ambient. Broad PL spectra associated with $Eu^{2+}$ ions, with a maximum intensity at 600 nm and a FWHM of 110 nm, were observed from the thin film annealed at $1000^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ ambient.
