  • Platinum group metals (pgm) are useful to many industries such as chemical, dental and medical, petroleum, refining, electrical and electronic, and automotive. Researchers at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and PGM Recovery Ltd. have developed jointly an environmentally sound and metallurgically efficient process for extracting these metals from secondary sources. Once these metals have been dissolved in the leach liquor, the individual metals mainly platinum, palladium, and rhodium, should be separated in order to recover the individual metals with high purity. During this investigation, solvent extraction has been chosen as the method used to achieve the separation and extraction of platinum, palladium, and rhodium from the leach liquor. There were three solutions used throughout this procedure: 1) Synthetic solution (200 ppm Pt 80 ppm Pd 20 ppm Rh; 300 ppm Pt, 180 ppm Pd 50 ppm Rh), and 2) Auto catalyst leach liquors (100 ppm Pt, 30 ppm Pd, 20 ppm Rh). The solvents investigated included Lix 84(2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetonphenone oxime in a mixture with 5-dodecylsalicyloxime), Lix 84-I, ACORGA CLX-50 (diester of pyridine 3,5 dicarboxylic acid), and di-hexyl sulfide. The extraction values achieved using ACORGA CLX-50, Lix 84, and Lix 84-I were respectively Pt (25%, 0% 0%), Pd (100%, 99.8%, 95.3%), and Rh (99.1%, 35.5%, 4.25%). The stripping processes for the Lix 84, and Lix 84-I were proven to be more involved than others. The solutions were required to be simultaneously heated and stirred. The percentages acquired through these processes yielded unsatisfactory results. The stripping procedure for the ACORGA CLX-50 was easier to execute, yet the percentage recovered from this process was also unsatisfactory. Overall the di-hexyl sulfide has proved to be the most successful organic for this procedure. The average percent extracted for palladium was excellent with 99.9% - 100% with very little Platinum and rhodium extracted. The ability of stripping palladium in ammonia solution was also found to be excellent.

  • In this paper, in order to control the burning rate and pressure exponent of HTPB/AP/Al based propellant for the improvement of performance, the effect of the size ratio of AP particles and various contents of Butacene as burning catalyst on combustion properties was investigated. In the propellant formulation with both $28{\mu}m$ Al of 23% and Butacene of 3%, the burning rate and pressure exponent were increased with increasing the contents of $9{\mu}m$ AP particles. And the burning rate was increased with increasing the contents of Butacene with showing the relatively low pressure exponent in the propellant containing Butacene. However, the significant variations of pressure exponent by contents of Butacene were not observed.

  • A coil design of pulse induction metal detectors has been described. The search coil was demonstrated by using the wire with the diameter of 0.3 mm, 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm and the dielectric plate with the $30cm{\times}30cm$ and $35cm{\times}35cm$, the time constant and the currents of the coil as the variation of the coil size and the number of coil turns was characterized. The coil parameters like the resistance, the inductance and the time constants as the variation of the diameter of the wire, the coil size and the number of coil turns were compared and analysed through the calculation and the measurement. In addition, investigating the coil currents as the variation of the input pulse width, the coil design of pulse induction metal detectors has been discussed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to improve the quality of the PGM system by improving the structure and production process of slip-ring rotary joint for radar. Methods: The improvement measures for each cause are established through failure analysis of broken items. Specifically, changing in the housing to improve the heating system. Changing the transportation method to prevent damage to equipment during transport. Changing work process of the attenuator ring to prevent damage. etc. Results: The results of this study are as follows; improving the heating system reduces heat generated by the attenuator by about 7 degrees and obtain additional temperature margins. Reduction of defect rate because of adding X-band rotary joint run-out measurement test, ESS of slip-ring rotary joint and Transportation improvement(reinforced flight boxes, tube protection, etc). Getting stable VSWR values by improving work process of attenuator overheating due to a bad bonding process. Conclusion: Through this study, improvements were made to slip-ring rotary joint that failed repeatedly for various reasons. As a result of the application of the improvements, the same fault does not occur until now, so we can see that the quality of PGM has improved.

  • In this study, optimal design of direct-drive VCMs (Voice Coil Motor) for a missile fin actuator is carried out. The torque performance and the characteristics of the VCM are predicted by commercial electromagnetic analysis software, ANSYS Maxwell. The optimal design is obtained at the minimum and maximum actuating angles where the aerodynamic load acting on the fin is the largest in the operating range. The critical variables of the actuator is designed and the RSM (Response Surface Method) is used for the optimization. The response surface model consists of second-order functions and its experimental points are selected by a central composite design. This design is widely used for fitting a second-order response surface. The adjustment regression coefficients is computed for adequacy checking of the response surface model. Finally, the torque values obtained by the RSM and the ANSYS Maxwell are shown in good agreement.

  • In this paper, we propose a systematic design approach based on cavity-mode resonance analysis to improve the radiated susceptibility of cables in air vehicles. As electronic devices equipped in air vehicles substantially increase, enhancing the radiated susceptibility of internal cables becomes more challenging and significant. The proposed design approach provides an efficient method to avoid and suppress cavity-mode resonances using analytical methods to estimate the resonance frequencies and the current ratio induced by the cavity-mode resonances. It is demonstrated in simulated results that the proposed method offers a design solution for improving the radiated susceptibility and reduces the computation time by up to 99.6% compared to the previous design method.

  • Thermoelectric generator (TEG) generally do not have high heat conversion efficiencies. The performance of a thermoelectric generator module depends on the shape of the legs as well as the properties of the material and the number of legs. In this study, the leg shapes of thermoelectric elements are modeled into various geometric structures such as cylinder and cube shaped to efficiently harvest waste heat, and the electrical characteristics are compared numerically. The temperature gradient and power generation according to the bridge shape are found to be highest at the existing Cube shape. As a result of comparing the power generation using the cooling effect, the Cone shape was the highest in natural convection and the Hourglass shape was highest in forced convection. Research results confirm that geometry can affect the efficiency of thermoelectric generators.

  • The manufacturing processes of high-precision parts for PGM (Precision Guided Missiles) have not been improved for decades; they still depend on machining or high-precision casting. These processes have an advantage when making small amounts of high-reliability parts in the usual case of a PGM system. In the case of a PGM system, however, which has been made for striking an extensive area, requires hundreds of bomblet units that require mass productivity. In addition, in the case of a part that is very difficult to machine, mass productivity and quality cannot be satisfied at the same time. In particular, cost reduction is an essential precondition to strengthening the export competitiveness of Korean defense articles. This study examined whether the MIM process is appropriate for manufacturing high-precision parts that require mass productivity. The optimized MIM process condition was determined after carrying out fundamental research. Comparisons of the quality of prototype parts with original parts and a functional test of a fuse that had been made with MIM parts highlighted the application possibility of the MIM process.

  • A developer solves problems with isolating failures if faults are detected when inspecting missiles using the missile assembly test set (MATS) and then resumes the testing. In order to identify faults, it is necessary to analyze the data coming from the equipment, but the information received may not be sufficient, depending on the inspection environment. In this case, the developer repeats the test until the problem is reproduced or checks the performance of each piece of equipment that is related to the fault. When this task is added, schedule management becomes problematic, and development costs rise. To solve this problem, we need to design a MATS in a systematic way to increase fault coverage while satisfying the required reliability. By designing the necessary processes for each procedure, it is possible to reduce the fault identification time when a fault is detected during operations. But it is not possible to guarantee 100% fault coverage, so we provide another method by comparing costs and effects. This paper describes a development method to enhance the reliability of the missile assembly test set; it describes the expected effects when it is adapted, and describes the limitations of this method.
