This study aims at providing a simple and effective methodology to define a meaningful characteristic period for special class of earthquake records named "pulse-like ground motions". In the proposed method, continuous wavelet transform is employed to extract the large pulse of ground motions. Then, Fourier amplitude spectra obtained from the original ground motion and the residual motion is simply compared. This comparison permits to define a threshold pulse-period (Tp∗) as the threshold period above which the pulse component has negligible contributions to the Fourier amplitude spectrum. The effect of pulse on frequency content of motions was discussed on the light of this definition. The advantage and superior features of the new definition were related to the inelastic displacement ratio (IDR) for single-degree-of-freedom systems with period equal to one half of the threshold period. Analyses performed for the proposed period at three ductility levels u=2,4,6 were compared with the results obtained at half of pulse period derived from wavelet analysis, peak-point method and the peak of product of the velocity and the displacement response spectra (Sv x Sd). According to the results, pulse effects on inelastic displacement ratio seem to be more important when $\frac{T_p^*}{T}=2$ (T is the fundamental vibration period of system). The results showed that utilizing of the proposed definition could facilitate an enhanced understanding of pulse-like records features.

The purposes of this study were to classify the changing periods of apartment outdoor space in Korea and to clearly understand the specific characteristics of each period. The study has been done through on-site observation of apartment complexes, and through the analysis of housing estate planning techniques, rules and regulations affecting outdoor spaces during the rapidly developing era. The results of this study shows that three major periods with distinct characteristics were found, which were as follows: 1) The first well defined period spans from 1960 to 1990. In this period, apartment construction was rapid, and as a result, quality of housing environments were sacrificed. As little attention was given to the landscapes in apartment complex, they were constructed very simple and identical in outdoor space of apartment complex. This period can be referred to as the 'commonly universal period in apartment outdoor space'. 2) The second period spans from 1991 to 1996, during which time a housing construction project for two million residences was completed in order to significantly stimulate the provision of houses to the general public. As a result, regulations were relaxed causing housing environments to deteriorate. Although apartments were constructed very close together, there was some diversification and experimentation in outdoor styles. This period can be referred to as the 'congestion period of apartment outdoor space'. 3) The third period spans from 1997 to the present. During this time the number of unsold apartments has grown considerably throughout the country. Many different apartment complex marketing strategies have been employed to reduced the glut of unsold apartments. This experimental trend has continued and been well-received since the IMF period. The distinguishing characteristics of this period are the introduction of a rich natural landscape, the increase in communications among residents, the human oriented design, and the refined and elegant design for the outdoor street furnitures. As a result, this period can be named the "differentiation period of apartment outdoor space".
This study compared the lipid metabolism of white Leghorn layers between the growing and the laying periods. The study was conducted on thirty layers in the growing period (14 weeks old) and in the initial laying period (36 weeks old; 14 weeks from the onset of laying). Results indicated that all plasma lipid traits were significantly different (p<0.05) between the two periods. The estrogen concentration in the laying period was about 3 fold that in the growing period. Triacylglycerol (TG) concentration in the laying period was about 12 fold that in the growing period. The phospholipids, cholesterol, glycerol and non esterified fatty acid (NEFA) in the laying period were also higher than those in the growing period (p<0.05). Lipogenic enzyme activities in the laying period were higher than in the growing period (p<0.05). High-density lipoprotein (HDL) was the largest lipoprotein portion in growing layers. In laying hens, the major lipoprotein portion was very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). It was also shown that protein is the primary component of HDL and TG is the largest portion of VLDL in both periods. In laying hens, VLDL contained more TG than that in growing layers (p<0.05). The VLDL particle size in laying hens was larger than that in growing layers (p<0.05). This study indicates that the lipid metabolism traits of a layer in the laying period were different from those in the growing period. The lipogenesis related traits in the laying period were markedly greater than in the growing period.
Five adult sheep were exposed to intermittent cold for 12 h (18:00-06:00) at an air temperature of $5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ followed by 12 h (06:00-18:00) at $25{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ over a period of 8 days continuously. Carotid artery blood (Tc), mean skin (Ts) and mean body (Tb = 0.86 Tc + 0.14 Ts) temperatures, heat production rate (HP), respiratory evaporative heat loss, respiration rate (RR) and volume were measured before and after exposure. Tc during the 12 h cold period of intermittent cold exposure was similar to that during the corresponding period in the warm environment, while Tc in the $25^{\circ}C$ of intermittent cold was higher (p < 0.05) than that in the corresponding period in the warm environment. Ts during the cold period markedly decreased (p < 0.001) by about $9^{\circ}C$ when compared with that in the corresponding time period in the warm environment, while Ts during the $25^{\circ}C$ period of intermittent cold recovered to a similar level to that in the warm environment. Tb was lower (p < 0.001) during the cold period of intermittent cold, whereas a slight increase in Tb during the $25^{\circ}C$ period of intermittent cold was significant (p < 0.05) when compared with the value during the similar period in the warm environment. HP was greatly increased (p < 0.001) by cold exposure, followed by an immediate decrease during the first one hour of the 12 h warm period, reaching a similar level to that in the warm environment. A lower (p < 0.05) RR was observed during both the cold and $25^{\circ}C$ period of intermittent cold than during the corresponding periods in the warm environment. The results of the present investigation clearly show that the body temperature of sheep increased during a 12 h warm period following 12 h of exposure to cold. These results suggest that during a warm period of an intermittent cold exposure cycle, heat could be shored in the animal body.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the predictors between the early and late postpartum period in parturient women. Methods: The Subjects were 399 healthy postpartum women who visited the obstetric clinic at 5 hospitals for a routine check up after childbirth. They were divided into two groups: one was in the early postpartum period, the first three weeks after childbirth (n=107), the other was in the late postpartum period, four to six weeks after childbirth (n=292). The data were collected by using a self-report questionnaire from July to September, 2006. The data were analyzed with the SPSS 12.0 Win program. Results: There were significant statistical differences in age and parity between the two groups. Postpartum fatigue was significantly predicted by postpartum depression and age in the early period, and postpartum depression, sleep satisfaction, and childcare stress in the late period. The mean scores of childcare stress and perceived infant difficulty in the late period were significantly higher than those of the early postpartum period. Conclusion: Postpartum depression was the most important predictor of postpartum fatigue regardless of the postpartum period. In addition, especially in the late period, sleep satisfaction and childcare stress were significant predictors of postpartum fatigue. Based on these results, primary nursing interventions for reducing postpartum fatigue should focus on postpartum depression management, and nursing interventions for increasing sleep satisfaction and decreasing childcare stress would be helpful for management of postpartum fatigue in parturient women in the late period.

The objective of this study is to obtain the basic data for investigating the potentiality of continuous utili~ation (first cutting in the late fall and regrowth yield in next spring) of forage rape seeded in fall. Fresh yield and the content of nitrogenous compound in leaves and roots were measured during a growth period. Fresh yield accumulation was very low between the late fall(470kg/10a) and the early regrowth period( 1.070kg /IOa). Total nitrogen content in leaves until the wintering period was decreased from 4.71% to 3.70%. while that in roots slightly increased during this period. The highest content(4.84%) in roots was observed in the early regrowth period, and then rapidly decreased as growth advanced. Protein-N was the largest pool of nitrogenous compound in leaves and roots through entire growth period, Its content in leaves decreased until the wintering period (Feb. 4), and then increased until the bolting stage(Apr. 10). Protein-N in roots highly accumulated from the late fall(11.1mg/gDM) to the early regrowth period(l6.9mg/gDM), and then decreased until the early tlowering stage. The content of amino acid-N in leaves showed a little change with a range from 5.7 to 8.5mgIgDM during entire growth period, while that in roots rapidly decreased from early regrowth period. The content of $NO_3$-N decreased from 7.0 to 4.3mglgDM in leaves, while increased from 0.9 to 2.3mg/gDM in roots from the late fall to the wintering period. 7he content of $NH_4$-N was lower and less varillble than other nitrogen compound during entire growth period. The results clearly showed that protein-N was the main storage form and highly accumulated in roots of overwintering forage rape.

Lee[15] examined quantity discount contracts between a manufacturer and a retailer in a stochastic, two-period inventory model where quantity discounts are provided based on the previous order size. During the two periods, the retailer faces stochastic (truncated Poisson distributed) demands and he/she places orders to meet the demands. The manufacturer provides for the retailer a price discount for the second period order if its quantity exceeds the first period order quantity. In this paper we extend the above two-period model to a k-period one (where k < 2) and propose a stochastic nonlinear mixed binary integer program for it. In order to make the program tractable, the nonlinear term involving the sum of truncated Poisson cumulative probability function values over a certain range of demand is approximated by an i-interval piecewise linear function. With the value of i selected and fixed, the piecewise linear function is determined using an evolutionary algorithm where its fitness to the original nonlinear term is maximized. The resulting piecewise linear mixed binary integer program is then transformed to a mixed binary integer linear program. With the k-period model developed, we suggest a solution procedure of receding horizon control style to solve n-period (n < k) order decision problems. We implement Lee's two-period model and the proposed k-period model for the use in receding horizon control style to solve n-period order decision problems, and compare between the two models in terms of the pattern of order quantities and the total profits. Our computational study shows that the proposed model is superior to the two-period model with respect to the total profits, and that order quantities from the proposed model have higher fluctuations over periods.

This study examined the impact of using total mixed ration (TMR) and concentrate on feed intake, daily gain, carcass yield grade, and carcass quality grade of Hanwoo steers and its subsequent economic efficiency. Thirty six 7-month-old Hanwoo steers were assigned to one of the four treatment groups, and each group was divided into three repeated pens, with each repeated pen comprising three steers. The treatment groups were: 1) separate feeding with commercial concentrate and forage (namely, SCF) for the entire experimental period; 2) TMR feeding for a growing period followed by SCF for the early and late fattening period (namely, TMRGSCF); 3) TMR feeding for growing and an early fattening period followed by SCF for the late fattening period (namely, TMREFSCF); and 4) TMR feeding for the entire experimental period (namely, TMRW). The results showed that the SCF treatment had significantly (p < 0.05) higher feed intake during the growing period than other treatments. In contrast, the total feed intake had little difference during early and late fattening as well as the whole period regardless of feeding strategies. Daily gain showed no difference during the growing period. However, it was significantly higher in SCF and TMREFSCF treatments for the early and late fattening period, respectively (p < 0.05). The daily gain during the total raising period is in the order of TMREFSCF > TMRGSCF > SCF > TMRW. Carcass characteristics, including carcass weight, loin eye muscle area, and carcass yield grade, did not significantly differ among different treatments. However, TMRW treatment, wherein TMR was fed for a long time, showed that the cold carcass weight was less compared with other treatments, but carcass yield grade was higher with thinner backfat. Backfat thickness was in the order of SCF > TMRGSCF > TMREFSCF > TMRW, showing that the thickness reduced with longer TMR feeding (p < 0.05). TMRGSCF, which numerically had a higher carcass quality grade, showed higher economic efficiency, whereas SCF showed low economic efficiency. In conclusion, it was more feasible to apply TMR strategy in the growing and early fattening period and then SCF for the early or late fattening period to improve carcass yield, quality grade, and economic efficiency.

To investigate the effect of sawdust fermentation period and storage period after fermentation on development as food for P. brevitarsis larvae, individual and group breeding were conducted on berry sawdust and oak sawdust. In individual breeding, the growth period of P. brevitarsis larvae was reduced by 12 days from the 60-day fermentation of berry sawdust to the 40-day fermentation of berry sawdust, 30 days from the 90-day fermentation of oak sawdust, and the weight of the larvae was the heaviest. In group breeding, the time it takes for P. brevitarsis larvae to change from 1st to 3rd instar is about 30 days after hatching from 60-day fermentation of berry sawdust, while 90-day fermentation of oak sawdust took more than 60 days, so the growth speed was fast and the survival rate was good. The results of the farmhouse demonstration test were the same trend, and it was judged that it would be possible to produce P. brevitarsis larvae with berries fermented sawdust, and it would be advantageous in terms of economy. In addition, for both individual and group breeding, the growth period of P. brevitarsis larvae was longer as the storage period was longer, the weight of the larvae decreased, and the survival rate was no different. The development period of P. brevitarsis larvae was the longest in the storage period of 18 months for berries fermented sawdust, and the storage period of oak fermented sawdust was longer in the storage period of 12 months and 18 months. Therefore, considering the results of individual breeding and group breeding, the fermentation period was appropriate for 60 days for berries sawdust, and the storage period for berries sawdust was stable from 0 to 12 months, and 0 to 6 months for oak sawdust.

The chemical composition of PM$_{2.5}$ was measured at Gosan, Jeju for two weeks each in November 2001 and spring 2002. In the latter part of the measurement period of November 2001, designated as the polluted period in this work, secondarily formed ion components as well as primarily emitted elemental carbon were high. PM$_{2.5}$ mass concentration was also high in this polluted period compared with the yellow sand period, in which daily average of PM $_{10}$ peaked up to 520 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥. Increase of major components of anthropogenic origin in the polluted period was not correlated with the variation in sea salt components while increase of crustal components in the yellow sand period was highly correlated with the variation in sea salt components. Trace elements were generally higher in the yellow sand period; however, toxic heavy metals such as zinc, cadmium and lead were the highest in the polluted period.d.d.d.
