  • Fabrication of polysulfone (PSf) hollow fiber membranes was investigated for the separation of $N_2/NF_3$ gas mixtures, which are emitted from the display and the semiconductor industries. A combination of the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) and the vapor-induced phase separation (VIPS) technique was applied to develop high flux hollow fiber membranes. Thin polymer layers were further coated onto the surface of the hollow fiber membranes by using polydimethylsiloxiane (PDMS) or Teflon AF1600(R), which contributes to improve the $N_2/NF_3$ selectivity. The $N_2/NF_3$ separation performances of our PSf hollow fiber membranes were determined by the intrinsic properties of coating materials. Especially, the PSf hollow fiber membrane coated with Teflon AF 1600(R) exhibited a higher $N_2/NF_3$ selectivity (> 14) with a slightly lower $N_2$ permeance (4.5 GPU), as compared to the commercial PSf counterparts. This feature provides a good potential as a membrane structure to separate $N_2/NF_3$.

  • Two types of polymer-based optical splitters with $200{\mu}m$ large core are presented for optical multimode networks, such as smart home networks, intelligent automotive networks, etc. Optical splitters that have 1:1 symmetric and 9:1 asymmetric structure were fabricated by a ultra violet(UV)-imprint technology using a deep etched Si(silicon) master by the Bosch process. In this paper, we successfully fabricated the symmetric and asymmetric optical splitters with suitable optical network applications.

  • Recently, three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems, which are superior to conventional two-dimensional (2D) vascular systems that mimic the in vivo environment, are being actively studied to reproduce drug responses and cell differentiation in organisms. Conventional two-dimensional cell culture methods (scaffold-based and non-scaffold-based) have a limited cell growth rate because the culture cannot supply the culture medium as consistently as microvessels. To solve this problem, we would like to propose a 3D culture system with an environment similar to living cells by continuously supplying the culture medium to the bottom of the 3D cell support. The 3D culture system is a structure in which microvascular structures are combined under a scaffold (agar, collagen, etc.) where cells can settle and grow. First, we have manufactured molds for the formation of four types of microvessel-mimicking chips: width / height ①100 ㎛ / 100 ㎛, ②100 ㎛ / 50 ㎛, ③ 150 ㎛ / 100 ㎛, and ④ 200 ㎛ / 100 ㎛. By injection molding, four types of microfluidic chips were made with GPPS (general purpose polystyrene), and a 100㎛-thick PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) film was attached to the top of each microfluidic chip. As a result of observing the flow of the culture medium in the microchannel, it was confirmed that when the aspect ratio (height/width) of the microchannel is 1.5 or more, the fluid flows from the inlet to the outlet without a backflow phenomenon. In addition, the culture efficiency experiments of colorectal cancer cells (SW490) were performed in a 3D culture system in which PDMS films with different pore diameters (1/25/45 ㎛) were combined on a microfluidic chip. As a result, it was found that the cell growth rate increased up to 1.3 times and the cell death rate decreased by 71% as a result of the 3D culture system having a hole membrane with a diameter of 10 ㎛ or more compared to the conventional commercial. Based on the results of this study, it is possible to expand and build various 3D cell culture systems that can maximize cell culture efficiency by cell type by adjusting the shape of the microchannel, the size of the film hole, and the flow rate of the inlet.

  • With the development of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, numerous people worldwide connect with various electronic devices via Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs). Considering that HMIs are a new concept of dynamic interactions, wearable electronics have been highlighted owing to their lightweight, flexibility, stretchability, and attachability. In particular, wearable strain sensors have been applied to a multitude of practical applications (e.g., fitness and healthcare) by conformally attaching such devices to the human skin. However, the stretchable elastomer in a wearable sensor has an intrinsic stretching limitation; therefore, structural advances of wearable sensors are required to develop practical applications of wearable sensors. In this study, we demonstrated a 3-dimensional (3D), porous, and piezoelectric strain sensor for sensing body movements. More specifically, the device was fabricated by mixing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polyvinylidene fluoride nanoparticles (PVDF NPs) as the matrix and piezoelectric materials of the strain sensor. The porous structure of the strain sensor was formed by a sugar cube-based 3D template. Additionally, mixing methods of PVDF piezoelectric NPs were optimized to enhance the device sensitivity. Finally, it is verified that the developed strain sensor could be directly attached onto the finger joint to sense its movements.

  • New piezoelectric and triboelectric materials for energy harvesting are being widely researched to reduce their processing cost and complexity and to improve their energy conversion efficiency. In this study, BaTiO3 films of various thickness were deposited on Ni foams by R.F. magnetron sputtering to study the piezoelectric and triboelectric properties of the porous spongy structure materials. Then piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) were prepared with spongy structured BaTiO3 and PDMS composite. The output performance exhibited a positive dependence on the thickness of the BaTiO3 film, pushing load, and poling. The PENG output voltage and current were 4.4 V and 0.453 ㎂ at an applied stress of 120 N when poled with a 300 kV/cm electric field. The electrical properties of the fabricated PENG were stable even after 5,000 cycles of durability testing. The triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) were fabricated using spongy structured BaTiO3 and various polymer films as dielectrics and operated in a vertical contact separation mode. The maximum peak to peak voltage and current of the composite film-based triboelectric nanogenerator were 63.2 V and 6 ㎂, respectively. This study offers new insights into the design and fabrication of high output nanogenerators using spongy structured materials.

  • In order to apply to stretchable electronics packaging, locally stiffness-variant stretchable substrates consisting of island structure were fabricated by combining two polydimethylsiloxane elastomers of different stiffnesses and their elastic moduli were characterized as a function of the width of the high-stiffness island. The low-stiffness substrate matrix and the embedded high-stiffness island of the stretchable substrate were formed by using Dragon Skin 10 of the elastic modulus of 0.09 MPa and Sylgard 184 of the elastic modulus of 2.15 MPa, respectively. A stretchable substrate was fabricated to be a configuration of 6.5-cm length, 0.4-cm thickness, and 2.5-cm width, in which a high-stiffness Sylgard 184 island, of 4-cm length, 0.2-cm thickness, and 0.5~1.5-cm width, was embedded. The elastic modulus of a stretchable substrate was increased from 0.09 MPa to 0.16 MPa by incorporating the Sylgard 184 island of 0.5-cm width to Dragon Skin 10 substrate matrix. The elastic modulus was further improved to 0.18 MPa and 0.2 MPa with increasing the Sylgard 184 island width to 1.0 cm and 1.5 cm, which were in good agreement with values estimated by combining the Voigt structure of isostrain and the Reuss structure of isostress.

  • On an offshore plant topside, various types of offshore facilities for processing energy resources, such as oil and gas, and equipment and outfitting for connecting these facilities are installed in a limited space. An offshore plant superstructure is composed of numerous supporting rack structures and reinforcements for securing and supporting offshore installations and the related equipment. This paper describes the development of design support software to support this superstructure design efficiently. The developed design support software, which was based on AVEVA Marine's PML(Programmable Macro Language), supports the parametric method for superstructure design. A method of batch 3D modeling from 2D drawings for supporting rack structure produced in the basic and detailed design was also developed using AutoLisp. In addition, through the application example of superstructure module design, the design support software introduced in this paper can be expected to reduce the design time by more than 90% compared to the use of only basic functions of AVEVA PDMS.

  • SiC is a material with excellent strength, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance. It is generally used as a material for SiC invertors, semiconductor susceptors, edge rings, MOCVD susceptors, and mechanical bearings. Recently, SiC single crystals for LED are expected to be a new market application. In addition, SiC is also used as a heating element applied directly to electrical energy. Research in this study has focused on the manufacture of heating elements that can raise the temperature in a short time by irradiating SiC-I2 with microwaves with polarization difference, instead of applying electric energy directly to increase the convenience and efficiency. In this experiment, Polydimethylsilane (PDMS) with 1,2 wt% of iodine is synthesized under high temperature and pressure using an autoclave. The synthesized Polycarbosilane (PCS) is heat treated in an argon gas atmosphere after curing process. The experimental results obtain resonance peaks using FT-IR and UV-Visible, and the crystal structure is measured by XRD. Also, the heat-generating characteristics are determined in the frequency band of 2.45 GHz after heat treatment in an air atmosphere furnace.

  • Synthesis of well-defined particle with tunable size, shape, and functionalities is strongly emphasized for various applications such as chemistry, biology, material science, chemical engineering, medicine, and biotechnology. This study presents micromolding method for the fabrication of anisotropic particles with elegant control of curvature of covex roof. For the demostration of rapid fabrication of the particles, we have applied polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) micromold as structure guiding template and wetting fluid to control curvature of roof of the particles. Based on this approach, we can control the radius of curvature from $20{\mu}m$ to $70{\mu}m$ with different aspect ratio of mold. In addition, wetting fluids with different wetting properties can also modulate the height and radius of curvature of the particles. We envision that this methodology is promising tool for precise control of particle shape in 3-dimensional space and new synthetic route for anisotropic particles with cost effective, simple, easy, and fast procedure.
