  • Polishing a die that has free-form surfaces is a time-consuming and tedious job, and requires a considerable amount of high-precision skill. Some workers tend to gradually avoid the polishing work because of the poor environment caused by dust and noise. In order to reduce the polishing time and cope with the shortage of skilled workers, a user-friendly automatic polishing system was developed in this research. The polishing system with five degrees of freedom is able to keep the polishing tool normal to the die surface. The polishing system is controlled by a PC-NC controller. To easily operate the developed polishing robot system, this study developed an integrated program in the Windows environment. This program consists of four modules: the polishing module, the graphic simulator, the polishing data generation module, and the teaching module. Also, the automatic teaching system was developed to easily obtain teaching data and it consists of a three dimensional joystick and a proximity sensor. The joystick is used to simultaneously drive the polishing system to an arbitrary orientation and the proximity sensor is used to obtain teaching points precisely. Also, to evaluate the stability of the driving program and the teaching system, polishing experiments of a die of saddle shape were carried out.

Growth Performance, Meat Yield, Oxidative Stability, and Fatty Acid Composition of Meat from Broilers Fed Diets Supplemented with a Medicinal Plant and Probiotics

  • The experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of Alisma canaliculatum with probiotics (ACP) on the growth performance, meat composition, oxidative stability, and fatty acid composition of broiler meat. Sixteen probiotic strains were tested for their levels of acid, bile, and heat tolerance. Among them, Lactobacillus acidophilus KCTC 3111, Enterococcus faecium KCTC 2022, Bacillus subtilis KCTC 3239, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae KCTC 7928 were selected for use in ACP. Exactly 140 Ross broiler chicks were assigned to four dietary treatments in five replications for 5 wks in a completely randomized design. The dietary treatments were NC (Negative control; basal diet), PC (Positive control; basal diet with 0.005% Chlortetracycline), ACP-0.5% (basal diet with 0.5% ACP powder), and ACP-1% (basal diet with 1% ACP powder). According to the results, body weight of the broilers increased, and feed conversion ratio improved in the ACP-0.5% group compared to the NC group (p<0.05). Crude protein content of breast meat was higher (p<0.05) in the ACP-0.5% group, whereas crude fat content of thigh meat was lower (p<0.05) in the supplemented groups. Breast meat absolute and relative weights were both higher (p<0.05) in the ACP groups compared to the control group. Further, ACP diets increased gizzard and decreased large intestine relative weights, whereas kidney relative weight decreased upon the addition of a higher level (1%) of ACP (p<0.05). Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances values of breast and thigh meats were reduced (p<0.05) by ACP supplementation compared to control. Regarding the fatty acid composition of breast meat, arachidonic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, PUFA, and n6 fatty acid levels decreased (p<0.05) in the ACP groups, whereas the levels of linoleic acid, PUFA, PUFA/SFA, and n6 fatty acid in thigh meat decreased (p<0.05) by ACP and PC diets. It can be suggested based on the study results that ACP-0.5% diet could be an effective feed additive for broilers.

젊은 성인에서 몰입형 가상현실 균형 훈련에 따른 정적 균형 변화 (Changes in Young Adults' Static Balance Ability Following Immersive Virtual Reality Balance Training)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of HMD (head mounted display)-based virtual reality balance training on static balance in young adults, and whether appropriate balance training can help healthy adults to improve balance ability in daily living. Methods: The study subjects were 14 healthy adults. Subjects received 20 minutes of HMD-based virtual reality balance training 3 times per week for 4 weeks. Static balance was measured before, during, and after training and after one month. Static balance was measured in a total of 8 conditions, and the results were classified as visual (F1), somatosensory (F5-6), vestibular (F2-4), and central nervous system (F7-8). Results: The test results showed no significant difference in pre-training, post-training, and follow-up results under all conditions at Fourier index F1, F5-6, and F7-8 frequencies. For the F2-4 frequency, there was a significant difference before and after training under NC (neutral head position, eyes closed, firm surface) and PC (neutral head position, eyes closed, elastic surface) conditions. The NC condition returned a significant decrease of F2-4 frequency in post-training testing as compared to pre-training, and the PC condition showed a significant decrease of F2-4 frequency between the pre-training and mid-training tests, and between the pre-training and post-training tests. Conclusion: These results indicate that HMD-based balance training can improve balance ability, even in normal adults, and seems especially effective for vestibular function training.

Comparative effects of dietary functional nutrients on growth performance, meat quality, immune responses, and stress biomarkers in broiler chickens raised under heat stress conditions

  • Objective: The objective of the present study was to investigate the comparative effects of dietary functional nutrients including glutamine (Gln), chromium picolinate (Cr picolinate), vitamin C (Vit C), betaine (Bet), and taurine (Tau) on growth performance, meat quality, immune responses, and stress biomarkers in broiler chickens raised under heat stress conditions. Methods: A total of 420 21-d-old Ross 308 male broiler chickens (initial body weight = 866±61.9 g) were randomly allotted to 1 of 7 treatment groups with 6 replicates. One group was kept under thermoneutral conditions and was fed a basal diet (PC, positive control). Other 6 groups were exposed to a cyclic heat stress condition. One of the 6 groups was fed the basal diet (NC, negative control), whereas 5 other groups were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0.5% Gln, 500 ppb Cr picolinate, 250 mg/kg Vit C, 0.2% Bet, or 1.0% Tau. The diets and water were provided ad libitum for 21 d. Results: Broiler chickens in NC group had decreased (p<0.05) growth performance and immune responses measured based on cutaneous basophil hypersensitivity (CBH), but increased (p<0.05) stress responses measured based on feather corticosterone concentrations and blood heterophil:lymphocyte than those in PC group. However, none of dietary functional nutrients had a positive effect on growth performance of broiler chickens. Dietary supplementation of 250 mg/kg Vit C improved (p<0.05) CBH responses of broiler chickens, but other functional nutrients had no such an improvement in CBH responses. All functional nutrients decreased (p<0.05) stress responses of broiler chickens. Conclusion: Functional nutrients including Gln, Cr picolinate, Vit C, Bet, and Tau at the supplemental levels used in this study decrease stress responses of broiler chickens to a relatively similar extent. However, this reduction in stress responses could not fully ameliorate decreased productive performance of broiler chickens raised under the current heat stress conditions.

Comparative preclinical assessment of the use of dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane to repair perforated sinus membranes

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane (dHACM) to repair perforated sinus membranes in rabbits. Methods: Bilateral surgical windows (7.5-mm diameter) were prepared on the nasal bones of 14 rabbits. Standardized circular perforations (5-mm diameter) were made in the sinus membrane by manipulating implant twist drills. The perforated sinus membranes were repaired using dHACM or a resorbable collagen membrane (CM). The negative control (NC) group did not undergo perforated sinus membrane repair, while the positive control (PC) group underwent sinus augmentation without perforations. The same amount of deproteinized porcine bone mineral was grafted in all 4 groups. After 6 weeks, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and histomorphometric evaluations were conducted. Results: The micro-CT analysis revealed that the total augmented volume was not significantly different among the groups. In the dHACM group, newly formed bone filled the augmented area with remaining biomaterials; however, non-ciliated flat epithelium and inflammatory cells were observed on the healed sinus membrane. Histometric analysis showed that the percentage of newly formed bone area in the dHACM group did not differ significantly from that in the CM group. The dHACM group showed a significantly higher percentage of newly formed bone area than the NC group, but there was no significant difference between the dHACM and PC groups. Conclusions: dHACM could be a feasible solution for repairing sinus membrane perforations that occur during sinus floor augmentation.

Comparison of the Immediate Effect of Ankle and Hip Joint Thera-band Exercise on the Balance Ability

  • PURPOSE: This study compared the effect of training ankle joint and hip joint thera-band exercise on balance. METHODS: The participants were divided into two groups of 11 each. Group A performed hip exercise after ankle exercise, and Group B performed ankle exercise after hip exercise. Using a green thera-band, the dorsiflexion and plantarflexion and hip flexion and hip extension were exercised repeatedly for 15 seconds three times with a five-second rest between each set. After the exercise and measurement of one area were complete, the exercise and measurement of the other area were performed at one-day intervals. The balance ability was assessed using a Tetrax and Y-balance test and repeated three times; the best values were taken. RESULTS: In the stability index (ST) of the static balance, the hip joint exercise group (HTG) during the follow-up of normal eye open (NO) revealed notable improvement over the ankle joint exercise group (ATG), and in the follow-up of the normal eye closed (NC), the ATG showed significant improvement over the HTG. In the pillow with eye closed (PC) follow-up, the ATG showed significant improvements over the HTG. At the left (Lt) and Y-balance test (YBT), the ATG showed significant improvements in the follow-up over the HTG (p <.05). CONCLUSION: In static balance, the ATG showed significant improvement in the follow-up of NC and PC over the HTG. In the dynamic balance, the Lt. dynamic balance on the non-dominant side in the ATG showed significant improvement in the follow-up over the HTG.

Inhibitory effect of natural extract mixtures on microbial growth and lipid oxidation of sausages during storage

  • Large amounts of additives are used during meat product processing to maintain product quality and shelf life. With the growing interest in healthy foods, natural plant-based additives are being used as alternatives to synthetic additives. In this study, six types of natural extracts with excellent antibacterial activity were selected, and their antibacterial and antioxidant activities against four types of pathogens were evaluated in various combinations. In addition, the pH, color, amount of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and growth of pathogenic microorganisms were analyzed during the storage of sausages treated with various combinations of these extracts. The natural extract mixtures exhibited different antibacterial activities, depending on the combination. Compared to grapefruit seed extract, a mixture of natural extracts extracted with ethanol (M4) reduced the Escherichia coli content by more than 99.9% after 8 days of storage and slowed the growth of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. by more than 80% after 14 days. Compared to untreated (NC) and grapefruit extract (PC)-treated sausages, sausages treated with the natural extract mixtures showed a significant decrease in CIE L* and an increase in CIE a* and CIE b* (p < 0.05). The pH value was significantly lower in sausages containing natural extract mixtures than in the NC and PC sausages (p < 0.05). The natural plant extract mixtures significantly prevented lipid oxidation (p < 0.05). In summary, different types of natural extract mixtures have a synergistic effect when used together, suggesting that natural preservatives can generally inhibit the growth of microorganisms and oxidation of processed meat.

난황항체제제(IgY) 첨가가 육용오리의 생산성, 혈액성상, 장내 미생물 및 면역글로불린 함량에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Egg Yolk Antibody Powder (IgY) Supplementation on Growth Performance, Blood Component Profile, Intestinal Microflora, and Immunoglobulin G in Meat Ducks)

  • 본 시험은 오리 사료 내 난황항체제제 첨가 시 생산성, 혈액 특성, 장내 미생물 및 면역글로불린에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 수행하였다. 1일령 오리(Cherry valley) 총 300수를 공시하여 5처리 3반복, 반복당 20수씩 공시하여 6주간 시험을 실시하였다. 처리구는 항생제를 첨가하지 않은 처리구(NC, negative control), 항생제 처리구(PC, positive control), 난황항체제제 0.1% 첨가구(T1), 난황항체제제 0.5% 첨가구(T2) 그리고 난황항체제제 1.0% 첨가구(T3)로 나누어 실험을 실시하였다. 종료 시 체중은 난황항체제제 첨가구와 항생제첨가구가무항생제처리구보다 유의적으로 높았고(P<0.05), 증체량 역시 난황항체제제 첨가구와 항생제 첨가구가 무항생제 처리구에 비해 높게 나타났다(P<0.05). 하지만 전 기간에 대한 사료 섭취량과 사료 요구율은 처리구간에 통계적인 유의차가 나타나지 않았다. 6주간 사양 T실험 후 혈액 생화학 및 혈구 분석 결과, 난황항체제제 0.1, 1.0% 첨가구에서는 total cholesterol 함량이 무항생제 처리구에 비해 다소 감소하는 경향을 보였으나, 통계적인 유의차는 없었다. 또한 AST와 ALT 함량 역시 처리구 간에 유의적인 차이를 보이지 않았다. 오리의 맹장 내 유산균 수는 난황항체제제 0.1와 0.5% 급여 시 다른 처리구에 비해 가장 높았으며(P<0.05), 대장균 수는 난황항체제제 수준이 증가함에 따라 감소하는 경향을 보였으나, 통계적 유의차는 없었다. 또한 혈청 내 면역글로불린 함량에도 처리구간에 유의적인 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 결과적으로 오리 사료 내 난황항체첨가 시 오리의 생산성을 개선시키고, 장내 미생물 균총에 효과적인 것으로 나타났으나, 아직까지 국내에서는 난황항체제제 첨가에 따른 사양 시험과 관련된 연구가 부족하다는 점을 감안할 때 향후 이에 대한 많은 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

혼합 생균제의 사료 내 첨가 급여가 육계의 생산성과 장내 환경에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Mixed Probiotics on Production Performance and Intestinal Environment in Broiler Chicken)

  • 본 실험은 육계 사료 내 혼합 생균제를 첨가 급여하였을 때, 육계의 성장 성적, 소장의 길이와 무게, 맹장 내 균총 변화와 암모니아 농도에 미치는 영향을 평가하고, 항생제 대체제 혹은 생리 활성 물질로서의 활용 가능성을 알아보기 위하여 실시하였다. 1일령 Ross 육용종 수평아리를 공시하여, 개체별로 체중을 측정한 후 4개 처리에 7반복으로 반복당 25수씩, 총 700수를 선발하고, 완전 임의 배치하여 실험을 진행하였다. 항생제(Avilamycin)를 첨가한 대조구[(+) control]와 항생제를 첨가하지 않은 대조구[(-) control] 및 항생제를 첨가하지 않은 대조구에 혼합 생균제를 각각 0.1%, 0.2% 수준으로 첨가한 처리구로 나누어 5주간 급여하였다. 5주령 종료 체중 및 증체량에 있어서는 처리구 간에 통계적인 유의성 있는 차이를 보이지 않았으나, 평균치로 보아 혼합 생균제 첨가구와 항생제 첨가구의 생산 성적은 아주 유사하였다. 한편, 항생제를 첨가하지 않은 대조구[(-) control]의 성적은 나머지 3개 처리구에 비하여 제일 성장률이 저조하였다. 사료 요구율에 있어서는 항생제 또는 혼합 생균제 첨가시 이들을 첨가하지 않은 대조구[(-) control]에 비해 유의성 있게 향상된 결과를 보였다. 맹장 내 암모니아 농도는 혼합 생균제를 첨가하여 급여한 처리구에서 개선되는 결과가 나타나 질소의 이용률이 증가하고, 분변 내 유해가스의 생성을 감소시킬 수 있었음을 암시하였다. 십이지장, 공장 및 회장의 길이에서는 처리구 간에 큰 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 공장의 상대적 중량은 항생제 무첨가 대조구에 비해 혼합 생균제 0.1% 및 0.2% 처리구에서 모두 유의하게 증가하는 결과가 관찰되었다(P<0.05). 장 내 균총은 항생제를 첨가 급여한 처리구에서 총 균수와 유산균이 감소하였고, 혼합 생균제의 첨가 급여에 의한 효과는 관찰되지 않았다. 본 연구 결과, 혼합 생균제를 첨가 급여하였을 때 육계의 생산성을 개선하고, 사육 초기의 사료 요구율 개선에 효과적이며, 암모니아 농도가 감소함으로써 장 내 환경 개선에 좋은 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 항생제 무첨가 사료에 성장 개선 목적의 사료 첨가제로서 이용 가치가 있었음을 나타내었다.

하드디스크 없는 클라이언트 PC를 위한 네트워크 컴퓨팅 시스템의 설계 및 구현 (Design and Implementation of a Network Computing System for Diskless Client PCs)

  • DL-NCS (Network Computing System for Diskless Client PCs)에서는 Windows NT에서 제공하는 기능을 최대한 이용하여 윈도우 9x setup 디스켓, RPL 프로파일의 생성방안 등을 제시하고, 원격부팅을 위한 RPL프로토콜을 제안한다. 이렇게 하여 하드디스크 없는 클라이언트가 서버측 하드디스크에 저장된 윈도우 9x를 원격부팅 할 수 있으며, 서버 측 주변장치 및 응용 프로그램들을 공유할 수 있게 구현한다. 윈도우 9x를 DL-NCS 서버로부터 부팅하기 위해 25대 의 클라이언트에서 동시에 PC의 전원 스위치를 켠 결과, 속도 면에서도 독립된 PC에서 부팅 할 때와 비슷한 시간 내에 부팅이 가능했다. 다른 응용프로그램에 대해서도 같은 실험을 실시해 본 결과, 우수한 네트워크 환경을 제공해 줌을 알 수 있었다. 본 DL-NCS를 활용하면, 주변장치 설치비용을 절감할 수 있고, 486SX/DX와 같은 낮은 성능의 PC를 재활용할 수 있으며, 소프트웨어 구입비용을 절감할 수 있다.
