The extinction probability of a branching process (a neutron chain in a multiplying medium) is calculated for a system randomly varying in time. The evolution of the first two moments of such a process was calculated previously by the authors in a system randomly shifting between two states of different multiplication properties. The same model is used here for the investigation of the extinction probability. It is seen that the determination of the extinction probability is significantly more complicated than that of the moments, and it can only be achieved by pure numerical methods. The numerical results indicate that for systems fluctuating between two subcritical or two supercritical states, the extinction probability behaves as expected, but for systems fluctuating between a supercritical and a subcritical state, there is a crucial and unexpected deviation from the predicted behaviour. The results bear some significance not only for neutron chains in a multiplying medium, but also for the evolution of biological populations in a time-varying environment.

All pixels of image sensor do not react uniformly when the light of same radiance enters into the camera. This non-uniformity has a direct influence on the image quality. However we can overcome it by calibration process under the special test-setup. Usually it is used the algorithm to get the correction coefficients under the specific illumination condition. But, this method has drawback in the very low or very high illumination due to pixel non-linearity. This paper describes the robust algorithm, which calculates the correction coefficients based on the pixel non-linearity model, against thew hole radiance. The paper shows the non-uniformity test results with the own camera and the specified test equipments as well. The results shows the best performance over the entire radiance when this method is applied.

The electrical design of the Ka-band antenna for the domestic Communications and Broadcasting Satellite (CBS) is described. The antenna has the offset Gregorian structure and is installed on the Earth-facing panel of the satellite. The electrical performance specifications for the antenna were determined from the required EIRP and G/T through the payload level performance analysis. This paper utilized the reflector shaping technology for the trade-off among the major performance parameters, resulting in compliance of all the parameters. The designed antenna shows 37.95 dBi EOC (End of Coverage) gain and 28.7 dB sidelobe isolation for transmit band, and 37.49 dBi EOC gain and 31.1 dB sidelobe isolation for receive band, The electrical performances of the antenna have been verified via the electrical testing of a manufactured EQM (Engineering Qualification Model) antenna.

Solvolyses of 3,4-dimethoxybenzenesulfonyl chloride (DSC) in water, D2O, CH3OD, and in aqueous binary mixtures of acetone, acetonitrile, 1,4-dioxane, ethanol, methanol, and 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) have been investigated at 25.0 oC. Kinetic solvent isotope effects (KSIE) in water and in methanol and product selectivities in alcohol-water mixtures are also reported. The Grunwald-Winstein plot of first-order rate constants for the solvolyic reaction of DSC with YCl shows marked dispersions into separated lines for various aqueous mixtures. With use of the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, the l and m values obtained are 1.12 and 0.58 respectively for the solvolyses of DSC. The relatively large magnitude of l is consistent with substantial nucleophilic solvent assistance. From Grunwald-Winstein plots the rate data are dissected approximately into contributions from two competing reaction channels. This interpretation is supported for alcohol-water mixtures by the trends of product selectivities, which show a maximum for ethanol-water mixtures. From the KSIE of 1.45 in methanol, it is proposed that the reaction channel favored in methanolwater mixtures and in all less polar media is general-base catalysed and/or is possibly (but less likely) an addition-elimination pathway. Also, the KISE value of 1.35 for DSC in water is expected for SN2-SN1 processes, with minimal general base catalysis, and this mechanism is proposed for solvolyses in the most polar media.
Blind hydraulic backfilling is a commonly used technique for subsidence control of the strata over unapproachable waterlogged underground excavations. In this investigation model studies on all the three variants of this technique, namely, hydro-pneumatic or air-assisted gravity backfilling, pumped-slurry backfilling and simple gravity backfilling, have been carried out in fully transparent models of the underground excavations. On examination of the filling process, it was revealed that in all the three cases, the basic process of filling occurs by sand transport along one or more meandering channels. The relative influence of sand, water and air flow rates on the area of filling from a single inlet point and the hydraulic pressure loss per unit length were studied in details. In hydro-pneumatic backfilling process, the air bubbles while moving upward through the meandering channels provide an additional buoyant force over and above the available hydraulic head. In this way the area of filling from a single borehole may be quite large even at small flow rates of water. During actual field implementation the injected air, if not released completely from the rise side holes, may cause troubles by way of creating potholes on the surface. The pumped-slurry technique has shown its capability of filling a relatively larger area at faster rate, especially when high-volume, low-pressure method was selected. But simple gravity filling was also found to be equally effective method as slurry pumping, especially when flow rates were high. In the second and third method discussed above, examination of variations of injection pressure was also done and its relation with physical phenomenon was also attempted. Some empirical relationships were also developed using multivariate regression with a view to help the practicing engineers.

Purpose: Fuji apples are one of the top selling exports for South Korea bringing in over $233.4 million in 2013. However, during the last few decades, about half of the Fuji apple orchards have been infected by Apple Marssonina Blotch disease (AMB), a fungal disease caused by Diplocarpon mali., which takes about 40 days to exhibit obvious visible symptoms. Infected leaves turn yellow and begin growing brown lesions. AMB promotes early defoliation and reduces the quality and quantity of apples an infected tree can produce. Currently, there is no prediction model for AMB on the market. Methods: The Precision Agriculture Laboratory (PAL) at the University of Florida (UF) has been working with the National Academy of Agricultural Science, Rural Development Administration, South Korea to investigate the use of hyperspectral data in creating an early detection method for AMB. The RDA has been researching hyperspectral techniques for disease detection at their Apple Research Station in Gunwi since 2012 and disseminates its findings to the local farmers. These farmers were surveyed to assess the state of knowledge of AMB in the area. Out of a population of about 750 growers, 111 surveys were completed (confidence interval of +/- 8.59%, confidence level of 95%, p-value of 0.05). Results: The survey revealed 32% of the farmers did not know what AMB was, but 45% of farmers have had their orchards infected by AMB. Twenty-five percent could not distinguish AMB from other symptoms. Overwhelmingly, 80% of farmers strongly believed an early detection method for AMB was necessary. Conclusions: The results of the survey will help to evaluate the outreach programs of the RDA so they can more effectively educate farmers on the identifying, treating, and mediating AMB.
Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy is a non-destructive technique to study voids and defects in solids by the measurement of gammas from electron-positron annihilation. In this study, we measured the lifetime of CR, EPDM, NBR, all of which are widely used polymer in various fields. A conventional fast-fast coincidence system in KAERI(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) has been used to measure the lifetime spectra, Three lifetime components were analyzed from each lifetime spectra. According to Tao-Eldrup model equation, the size and fraction of free-volume were calculated. Mean radius and free volume fraction of CR, EPDM NBR are $0.1217nm^3$(1.9103%), $0.14780nm^3$(5.3147%), $0.1216nm^3$(2.6381%), respectively. Through these measurements, we identified the feasibility of the PAL system for polymer analysis.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relative influence of diet and physical activity on obesity. The subjects were 155 adults aged 35-52 years from 24 neighborhood committees in 4 urban districts of Beijing (male : 78, female : 77). They were divided into normal weight, overweight and obese groups according to their BMI. The general information of the subjects was collected by interview-administered questionnaire. Dietary intake was obtained by three-day(two weekdays and one weekend day) food weighted method, physical activity was assessed by a validated combination of data obtained from activity monitors, bicycling information and activity records. There were no significant differences of age, gender, height, educational, family economic level, smoking and drinking between different groups. The proportion of flour intake was higher in obese group compared to normal weight and overweight groups, and that of vegetables is lower in obese group. The physical activity (PAL) was not significantly different between two groups of the normal, overweight and obese groups. After the adjustment for confounding factors using logistic regression model, we found that the proportion of flour intake was positively associated with obesity, while the proportion of vegetable intake was inversely associated with obesity. It is concluded that dietary patterns were associated with obesity and diets composed of more vegetables and less staple combined with physical activities could contribute to obesity prevention.
This study was conducted to assess the chemopreventive effects of sodium selenite in the rat medium-term multi-organ bioassay using a DMBDD model (DEN+MNU+BBN+DMH+DHPN). Seventy five,6-week-old, male SD rats were divided into 3 groups. The animals in group 1 received DEN(diethylnitrosamine,100 mg/kg bw, single i.p., in saline), MNU (N-methyl-nitrosourea,20 mg/kg bw, i.p.,4 times for 2 weeks), BBN (N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl) nitrosamine, 0.2% in drinking water for 2 weeks), DMH (1,2-dimethylhydrazine, 40 mg/kg bw, s.c., in saline.4 times (or 2 weeds), and DHPN (N-bis(2-hydroxy-pro-pal)nitrosamine,0.1% in drinking water for 2 weeks), then were placed on sodium selenite (4 ppm in drinking water) for 22 weeks from weeks 4 to 26. The animals in group 2 were given DMBDD alone. The animals in group 3 were given sodium selenite alone. Animals were sacrificed at week 12 for ACF quantitative analysis and at week 26 for tumor induction. The body weights in the group 1 were significantly decreased compared with those of group 2. The tumor multiplicities of large intestine in the group 1 were significantly decreased compared with those of group 2 (P<0.05). These results indicate that sodium selenite may have a potential as chemopreventive agents of colon carcinogenesis.
Low-rise structures are generally immersed within the roughness layer of the atmospheric boundary layer flows and represent the largest class of the structures for which wind loads for design are being obtained from the wind standards codes of distinct nations. For low-rise buildings, wind loads are one of the decisive loads when designing a roof. For the case of cylindrical roof structures, the information related to wind pressure coefficient is limited to a single span only. In contrast, for multi-span roofs, the information is not available. In this research, the numerical simulation has been done using ANSYS CFX to determine wind pressure distribution on the roof of low-rise cylindrical structures arranged in rectangular plan with variable spacing in accordance with building width (B=0.2 m) i.e., zero, 0.5B, B, 1.5B and 2B subjected to different wind incidence angles varying from 0° to 90° having the interval of 15°. The wind pressure (P) and pressure coefficients (Cpe) are varying with respect to wind incidence angle and variable spacing. The results of present numerical investigation or wind induced pressure are presented in the form of pressure contours generated by Ansys CFD Post for isolated as well as variable spacing model of cylindrical roofs. It was noted that the effect of wind shielding was reducing on the roofs by increasing spacing between the buildings. The variation pf Coefficient of wind pressure (Cpe) for all the roofs have been presented individually in the form of graphs with respect to angle of attacks of wind (AoA) and variable spacing. The critical outcomes of the present study will be so much beneficial to structural design engineers during the analysis and designing of low-rise buildings with cylindrical roofs in an isolated as well as group formation.
