This study was conducted to investigate the application of edible films to Raymyun soup packaging. The sorption isotherm curve and BET monolayer moisture content of Raymyun soup were estimated as a basic experiment. Also, the mechanical properties, water vapor permeability, and solubility of the films were investigated. Methylcellulose, sodium caseinate, and K-carrageenan films were used as edible films and glycerol and polyethylene glycol(MW 400) were used as plasticizers. In case tensile strength, methylcellulose films was 68.56 MPa and sodium caseinate film was 7.11 MPa. The elongations of sodium caseinate, methylcellulose, and K-carrageenan film were 115.41%, 23.79% and 0.60%, respectively. The water vapor permeabilties values of methylcellulose, sodium caseinate, and K-carrageenan film between 50% and 70% RH were $0.25-0.38ng{\cdot}m/m^2{\cdot}sec{\cdot}Pa,\;0.62-0.84ng{\cdot}m/m^2{\cdot}sec{\cdot}Pa\;and\;0.31-0.55ng{\cdot}m/m^2{\cdot}sec{\cdot}Pa$, respectively. For the solubility of films, sodium caseinate film showed the highest solubility and methylcellulose film showed the lowest solubility.
Three types of parylene (PA-N, PA-C, PA-D) were used for coating the surface on natural latex rubbers in order to improve surface characteristics including mechanical properties and biocompatibility. The parylene coating was the CVD (chemical vapor deposition) method, and the surface properties of the modified latex were measured. Annealing effects on the mechanical properties of the coated latex were also investigated. The adhesion between latex and parylene was good for all the types of parylene used. As annealing temperature was increased, latex modified with PA-N became more hydrophobic, while the latex treated with PA-C and PA-D became more hydrophilic. As the annealing temperature was raised, the tensile strength was increased, and the elongation was decreased. The biocompatibility was noticeably improved on the latex surface modified with the parylenes through CVD method.
To mass-product useful biopolymer films, chitosan/gelatin blend films were prepared by solution casting method. Effect of mixing ratio, tensile strength(TS), elongation(${\Delta}E$) at break, total color difference(E), water vapor permeability(WVP) and oxygen permeability(OP) on chitosan/gelatin blend films properties were investigated. TS, ${\Delta}E$, E, WVP and OP values of chitosan/gelatin blend films were 43.43-38.30 MPa, 9.02-15.09%, 1.28-3.81, $0.8420-0.9673ng{\cdot}m/m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$ and $1.5472{\times}10^{-7}-1.5424{\times}10^{-7}mL{\cdot}{\mu}m/m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$, respectively. TS of the blend films decreased, while E and E of the blend films increased with increasing chitosan content. WVP and OP of the blend films did not show any significant relationship with mixing ratio and thickness of the blend films. OP of the blend films were lower than those of low density polyethylene and oriented polypropylene.
To mass-produce useful biopolymer films, chitosan/gelatin blend films were prepared by solution casting method. Effects of mixing ratio, tensile strength (TS), elongation (E) at break, total color difference (${\Dalta}E$), opacity, water vapor permeability (WVP), oxygen permeability (OP), and thermal properties on chitosan/gelatin blend films properties were investigated. TS, E, ${\Dalta}E$, opacity, WVP, and OP values were 58.24-22.01 MPa, 13.11-24.67%, 1.86-17.45, 0.3104-1.2161 nmO.D./${\mu}m$, $1.6875-1.7225ng{\cdot}m/m^{2}{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$, and $2.2380{\times}10^{-7}-2.2975{\times}10^{-7}\;mL{\cdot}{\mu}m/m^{2}{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$, respectively. TS of blend films decreased, while E, ${\Dalta}E$, and opacity increased with increasing chitosan content. WVP of blend films did not show any significant relationship with mixing ratio and thickness of blend films. Miscibility of films was examined over entire composition range by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). TGA results showed gelatin is more thermally stable than chitosan and some interactions among functional groups of two biopolymers. Glass transition temperature $(T_{2})$ of films as determined by DMA decreased with increasing content of chitosan in the blend. Results of thermal analysis indicate high miscibility among polymer components in the blend.
This article describes synthesis and electrochemical properties of layer-by-layer self-assembled multilayer film composed of polyaniline (PANi), graphene oxide (GO) and phytic acid (PA), whereby the GO was electrochemically reduced to ERGO, resulting in $(PANi/ERGO/PANi/PA)_{10}$ film electrode. Especially, we examined the possibility to improve the volumetric capacitive property of $(PANi/ERGO)_{20}$ film electrode via combining a spherical hexakisphosphate PA nanoparticle into the multilayer film that would dope PANi properly and also increase the porosity and surface area of the electrode. The electrochemical performances of the multilayer film electrodes were investigated using a three-electrode configuration in 1 M $H_2SO_4$ electrolyte. As a result, the $(PANi/ERGO)_{20}$ electrode showed the volumetric capacitance of $666F/cm^3$ at a current density of $1A/cm^3$, which was improved to the volumetric capacitance of $769F/cm^3$ for the $(PANi/ERGO/PANi/PA)_{10}$ electrode, in addition to the cycling stability maintained to 79.3% of initial capacitance after 1000 cycles. Thus, the electrochemical characteristics of the $(PANi/ERGO)_{20}$ electrode, which was densely packed by ${\pi}-{\pi}$ stacking between the electron-rich conjugate components, could have been improved through structural modification of the multilayer film via combining a spherical hexakisphosphate PA nanoparticle into the multilayer film.
The gelatin film containing grapefruit seed extract (GSE) was prepared by incorporating different amounts (0, 0.02, 0.05, 0.08, 0.1%) of GSE into the film. The tensile strength (TS) of the film increased by the addition of GSE, and water vapor permeability (WVP) of the film decreased. In particular, the gelatin film containing 0.1% GSE had a TS of 10.28 MPa, while the control had 8.68 MPa. WVP of the film containing 0.1% GSE decreased to 2.18 ng m/m2 s Pa, compared to 2.48 ng $m/m^{2}s$ Pa of the control. In addition, incorporation of 0.1% GSE to the gelatin film decreased the populations of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes by 2.67 and 3.15 log CFU/g, respectively, compared to the control. These results suggest that as a packaging material, gelatin film containing GSE can have antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microorganisms in foods.

We have studied the technology to extend the storage period of 'Seolhyang' strawberries using modified atmosphere package (MAP) and ethyl pyruvate (EP) treatment for domestic distribution and export. The selected ripe strawberries harvested on December 28, 2016 at the Sancheong farmhouse were transported to the laboratory for 2 h and tested. After a day's precooling at $4^{\circ}C$, the strawberries were divided into seven experimental groups. These groups were control, active MAP using low density polyethylene (LDPE), active MAP using polyamide (PA), active MAP using PA with EP treatment, passive MAP using LDPE, passive MAP using PA and passive MAP using PA with EP treatment. Quality analysis was carried out every 4 days during the storage period of 16 days. During the storage period of 16 days, MAP decreased from 3.5% to less than 1.1% in weight loss ratio compared with control, and decreased from 36% to less than 7% in fungal incidence. In the case of fungi in the EP treatment group, hyphae did not grow on the outside of the strawberry but grew to the inside. This tendency was similar to that in the low oxygen and high carbon dioxide environment of the MAP, the mycelium of the fungus did not grow outside of the strawberry. Fungi are the biggest problem in the distribution and export of strawberries, and these results suggest that MAP alone could inhibit mold and increase shelf life.

To resolve environmental pollution caused by synthetic packaging materials, biodegradable films have been studied as an alternative. In this study, we prepared rockfish skin gelatin (RFG) and nano-clay (Cloisite $Na^+$ and Cloisite 10A) composite films to compare the effects of nano-clay on the physical properties of RFG film. Gelatin was extracted from rockfish skin and used to prepare RFG film with sorbitol as a plasticizer. Tensile strength (TS), water vapor permeability (WVP), and water solubility (WS) of the RFG film were 15.0 MPa, $2.70{\times}10^{-9}g\;m/m^2\;s\;Pa$, and 53.8%, respectively. Addition of nano-clay to the RFG film increased TS and decreased WVP and WS. The X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopic results suggest that RFG/nano-clay composite films formed an exfoliated structure. These results indicate that RFG/nano-clay composite films can be applied as biodegradable packaging materials in the food industry.
Edible films were prepared from proteins extracted from soybean curd residue by alkaline extraction and isoelectric precipitation. Effects of film forming solution pH and plasticizers on mechanical and barrier properties of edible films were studied. films were formed within pH $7{\sim}11$ with tensile strength (TS) of $2.9{\sim}3.3$ MPa. Films produced under pH 10 had the highest TS and Elongation (E) (3.3 MPa and 60.1%) but no significant difference was observed among water vapor permeabilities (WVP) of film. Glycerol, sorbitol and its mixture (1:1, w/w) were added as plasticizers. The concentration and mixing ratio of plasticizers also affected the TS, E and WVP of films. TS of films decreased from 15.0 MPa to 2.9 MPa as plasticizer concentration increased from 0.4 to 0.8 g plasticizer/g protein. At a plasticizer concentration, the highest TS was observed when sorbitol was used whereas the highest E was measured when mixture of glycerol and sorbitol was used as plasticizer WVP of films increased as the plasticizer concentration increased. Films plasticized with glycerol showed the highest WVP among the films with the same plasticizer concentrations. Edible films prepared from soybean curd residue protein showed very low oxygen permeabilities ($29.5{\sim}61.1aL{\cdot}m/m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$) and oil resistance at all plasticizer concentration level tested.
The actual overall migration data obtained from plastic food packaging materials into food simulants under high temperature testing conditions as described in the regulations of European Union, USA, and Korea or Japan were compared. Overall migration values(OMVs) with non-fatty food simulants under high temperature conditions were observed to be generally below 2.5 mg/dm$^2$ except polyamides(CPA and PA 6,6) which were tested at 121$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. As for the fatty food simulants, the OMVs with soybean oil were higher than other simulants. Among the films tested, PVC wrap showed higher OMVs ranging between 23.9 and 54.6 mg/dm$^2$than others. The OMVs were measured at higher level with the elevation of contact temperature and the extension of contact time, and in fatty food simulants rather than in non-fatty simulants. Under similar testing temperature and time conditions. the OMVs tended to be increased in polar films like PA with polar simulants, and contrarily in non-polar films like PO with non-polar simulants. It is noteworthy that a discrepancy with regard to the result of OMVs was observed for some films as a result of different migration testing methods and conditions of each country areas.
