  • This study aimed to investigate the effect of kangaroo care on physical development adaptation of external environment of prematurity, and maternal role confidence of those who delivered preterm infants. The subjects were 38 preterm infants and mothers with cesarean section delivery in the hospital, located at B city. Eighteen premature infants were assigned to the kangaroo care (KC) group or the control group (CG). Data were collected between June 2013 and June 2015. KC was given 3 times a day (60 min at a time) and performed a total of 10 times. The physical development indicator (weight, height, and head circumference) as well as the adaptation of external environment (temperature, heart rate, oxygenation) of preterm infants were checked before the start of the program. Following the initial measurement, the program was performed, and measurements were taken again at the end of the program. For measurement of maternal role confidence, structured self-reported questionnaires were performed. The results showed that the KC group had a lower oxygenation compared with the CG (t=2.27, p=.02); however, the physical development indicator (weight t=-0.83, p=.21, height t=-0.34, p=.37, head circumference t=1.29, p=.10) and maternal role confidence (t=-0.41, p=.34) were not significantly compared with the CG. The results of this study suggest that the practice of KC helps the adaptation of external environment of preterm infants

  • Housefly (Musca domestica L.) maggots are used as biomedical material. Ethanolic extracts of fly maggot (EM) were orally administered to male rats at levels of 0 (control group), 4.0, 6.0, and 8.0 mg per 100 g live weight for 40 days. Serum triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL-C decreased by 17.90, 17.60, and 16.37%, respectively, whereas HDL-C increased by 20.48% in the EM group compared with these parameters in a control group (p<0.05). Thymus and spleen weights dose-dependently increased by 21.42% and 21.42%, respectively, but abdominal fat decreased by 39.66% after EM administration compared with that in the control group (p<0.05). IgG, IgA, and IgM increased 35.14, 68.65, and 190.16%, respectively, in the EM groups compared to the control group (p<0.05). Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus increased by 41.68% and 35.55%, respectively, in the EM groups compared with the control group, and Bacteroides, Clostridium, Escherichia, and Streptococcus decreased by 24.96, 46.37, 25.00, and 34.05%, respectively, in the EM groups compared with the control group (p<0.05). Compared with the control group, total organic acids, acetic acid, and propionic acid increased by 31.11, 49.34, and 24.88%, whereas butyric acid, isobutyric acid, valeric acid, and isovaleric acid decreased by 30.79, 72.64, 32.90, and 63.16% respectively, in the EM groups (p<0.05). These results suggest that EM has a bifidogenic effect on immune cell development, blood lipid levels, and abdominal fat reduction by increasing the production of organic acid and numbers of cecal microorganisms in animals.

  • The effect of long-term storage on garlic antibacterial activity was investigated. A concentration of 5% or more garlic was found to be necessary to completely inhibit Eschrichia coli growth in tryptic soy broth. This value is substantially higher than the minimum inhibitory concentration of 1% for E. coli reported previously. pH-modified garlic extract was stored at different temperatures to investigate the impact of storage conditions (i.e., temperature, pH, period of storage) on the stability of the antibacterial activity of the garlic extract used against E. coli B34. The antibacterial effectiveness of the garlic extract against E. coli remained stable when both the storage temperature and the pH of the extract were kept low. When the garlic extract was stored at $40^{\circ}C and above, most or all of the garlic antibacterial activity disappeared after a 24-h storage period, regardless of the storage pH. The antibacterial activity was weakened when the pH of the garlic extract was adjusted to 8, and at low temperatures.

  • The purpose of stability testing is to provide evidence about how the quality of a drug varies with time under the influence of a variety of environmental factors. In this study, erythropoietin (EPO) was analyzed under different pH (pH 3 and pH 9) and temperature ($25^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$) conditions according to current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) and International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) guidelines. The molecular weight difference between intact EPO and deglycosylated EPO was determined by SDS-PAGE, and aggregated forms of EPO under thermal stress and high-pH conditions were investigated by size exclusion chromatography. High pH and high temperature induced increases in dimer and high molecular weight aggregate forms of EPO. UPLC-ESI-TOF-MS was applied to analyze the changed modification sites on EPO. Further, normal-phase high-performance liquid chromatography was performed to identify proposed glycan structures and high pH anion exchange chromatography was carried out to investigate any change in carbohydrate composition. The results demonstrated that there were no changes in modification sites or the glycan structure under severe conditions; however, the number of dimers and aggregates increased at $40^{\circ}C$ and pH 9, respectively.

  • The spontaneous frequency of genetic damage and the possible relationship of this damage to total radical-trapping antioxidant potential(TRAP) and antioxidant vitamins, including plasma levels of $\alpha$-carotene, $\beta$-carotene, cryptoxanthin, retinol, $\alpha$-tocopherol and ${\gamma}$-tocopherol in humans were investigated in 57 subjects using two indices of genetic damage, SCE & HFC frequency. The mean of SCE and HFC frequencies were weakly correlated with plasma TRAP(r=-0.305, p<0.1 for SCEs: r=-0.297, p<0.1 for HFCs, respectively), but those were strongly negatively correlated with plasma $\beta$-carotence(r=-0.385, p<0.01 for SCEs : r=-0.392, p<0.01 for HFCs) and cryptoxanthin(r=-0.312, p<0.05 for SCEs : r=0.335, p<0.05 for HFCs, respectively) levels in the subjects. However, those DNA damage markers including SCE and HFC did not correlate with either plasma $\alpha$-carotene, $\alpha$-tocopherol or retinol concentrations. The mean of SCE and HFC frequencies were positively correlated with plasma ${\gamma}$-tocopherol level(r=0.421, p<0.01 for SCEs : r=0.399, p<0.01 for HFCs, respectively). These findings indicate that increased cytogenetic DNA changes, as determined by SCE and HFC frequencies are possibly associated with generation of free radicals in lymphocytes and decreased plasma antioxidant vitamin($\beta$-carotene and cryptoxanthin) status in the subjects. • Inter-specific hybridization between Pleurotus pulmonarius and P. florida was attempted through PEG-induced protoplast fusion to select a fusant. The protocol for protoplast release, regeneration and fusion in these two Pleurotus species was standardized using the variables controlling the process. The mixture of mycolytic enzymes, i.e. commercial cellulase, crude chitinase and pectinase, KCl (0.6 M) as osmotic stabilizer, pH 6 of the phosphate buffer and an incubation time of 3 hours resulted in the maximum release of protoplasts from 3-day-old mycelia of P. florida ($5.3{\sim}5.75{\times}10^{7}$ protoplasts/g) and P. pulmonarius ($5.6{\sim}6{\times}10^{7}$ protoplasts/g). The isolated protoplasts of P. florida regenerated mycelium with 3.3% regeneration efficiency while P. pulmonarius showed 4.1% efficiency of regeneration. Polyethyleneglycol (PEG)-induced fusion of protoplasts of these two species resulted in 0.28% fusion frequency. The fusant produced fruiting bodies on paddy straw but required a lower temperature of crop running ($24{\pm}2^{\circ}C$) than its parents which could fruit at $28{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. The stable fusant strain was selected by testing for the selected biochemical markers i.e. Carbendazim tolerance and utilization of the lignin degradation product, vanillin.

  • In this study, total mercury and methyl mercury in whole blood of Korean was analyzed so as to investigate the correlation between total mercury (T-Hg) and methyl mercury (Me-Hg). 4000 whole blood samples were divided in four groups, according to T-Hg concentration in percentile: group I (p25-p50), group II (p50-p75), group III (p75-p95) and group IV (p95-p100). 100 samples were randomly selected from the each group, and Me-Hg concentration was measured. T-Hg concentration in whole blood was analyzed using a Direct Mercury Analyzer-80 and obtained limit of detection (LOD) was $0.2{\mu}gL^{-1}$. Me-Hg concentration was analyzed with ethylate derivatization using headspace-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and obtained LOD of methyl mercury was $0.5{\mu}gL^{-1}$. The geometric means of T-Hg and Me-Hg were $6.35{\mu}gL^{-1}$ and $4.44{\mu}gL^{-1}$, respectively, and 71.91% of T-Hg was presented as Me-Hg.

  • In this study, the anti-pigmentation efficacy of Panax vietnamensis (P. vietnamensis), a ginseng native to Vietnam, was confirmed. Melanin synthesis was repressed by ethanolic extracts of P. vietnamensis in B16F10 cells, melanocytes originated from mouse. At 250 ㎍/mL ethanolic extracts of P. vietnamensis, melanin contents were repressed by 64.04% compared to the control group. In addition, ethanolic extracts of P. vietnamensis downregulated tyrosinase activity and expression to 53.34% and 59.39%, respectively. As shown our result, ethanolic extracts of P. vietnamensis blocks α-MSH-mediated melanogenesis and is valuable whitening ingredients in cosmetics.

  • The continued environmental pollution caused by fossil fuel consumption has prompted researchers around the world to develop environmentally friendly energy technologies. Electrochemical energy storage is the significant area of research in this development process, and the research significance of supercapacitors in this field is increasing. Herein, a simple electrodeposition synthetic route was explored to develop the MoP layered cathode material. The layered structure provided a highly ion-accessible surface for smooth and faster ion adsorption/desorption. After Fe was doped into MoP, the morphology of MoP changes and the electrochemical performance was significantly improved. Specific capacitance value of the binder-free FeMoP electrode was found to be 269 F g-1 at 2 A g-1 current density in 6 M aqueous KOH electrolyte. After adding Fe to MoP, an additional redox contribution was observed in the redox conversion from Fe3+ to Fe2+ redox pair, and the charge transfer kinetics of MoP was effectively improved. This research can provide guidance for the development of supercapacitor electrode materials through simple electrodeposition technology.
