This paper addresses B-spline curve approximation of a set of ordered points to a specified toterance. The important issue in this problem is to reduce the number of control points while keeping the desired accuracy in the resulting B-spline curve. In this paper we propose a new method for error-bounded B-spline curve approximation based on adaptive selection of dominant points. The method first selects from the given points initial dominant points that govern the overall shape of the point set. It then computes a knot vector using the dominant points and performs B-spline curve fitting to all the given points. If the fitted B-spline curve cannot approximate the points within the tolerance, the method selects more points as dominant points and repeats the curve fitting process. The knots are determined in each step by averaging the parameters of the dominant points. The resulting curve is a piecewise B-spline curve of order (degree+1) p with $C^{(p-2)}$ continuity at each knot. The shape index of a point set is introduced to facilitate the dominant point selection during the iterative curve fitting process. Compared with previous methods for error-bounded B-spline curve approximation, the proposed method requires much less control points to approximate the given point set with the desired shape fidelity. Some experimental results demonstrate its usefulness and quality.
In this paper, we introduce the implied volatility from Black-Scholes model and suggest a model for constructing implied volatility surfaces by using the two-dimensional cubic (bi-cubic) spline. In order to utilize a spline method, we acquire grid (knot) points. To this end, we first extract implied volatility curves weighted by trading contracts from market option data and calculate grid points from the extracted curves. At this time, we consider several conditions to avoid arbitrage opportunity. Then, we establish an implied volatility surface, making use of the two-dimensional cubic spline method with previously estimated grid points. The method is shown to satisfy several properties of the implied volatility surface (smile, skew, and flattening) as well as avoid the arbitrage opportunity caused by simple match with market data. To show the merits of our proposed method, we conduct simulations on market data of S&P500 index European options with reasonable and acceptable results.
A counter shaft gear is an important part in the transmission system of vehicle. Its shape is relatively complicated and should meets high strength. Traditionally the counter shaft gear has been manufactured as follows; a spline body is firstly machined for teeth and then attached to the main gear body by frictional welding, and finally is finished by grinding. Therefore it is necessary to develop a new manufacturing technology eliminating both frictional welding and grinding processes. In this study, a new hot forging process was proposed and designed so that the spline body with teeth and main gear body are formed as one body. Finite element simulations and experimental works were peformed for design of forging processes to get the quality final precision-forged product. Consequently the most suitable blocker process could be obtained.
For the polynomial spline regression with fixed knots, some properties of the D-optimal design are discussed. Also the D-optimal design for some cases are found analytically by using a normalized B-spline basis for $S(P_m : k : \Delta)$. Based on the Kiefer-Wolfowitz equivalence theorem, the D-optimal design for some cases are found by numerical methods.
Boundary value problems are common in nature. Here we restrict our attention to the second order differential equations of the form $$ (1.1) \frac{d^2 y}{dx^2} = P(x)y(x) + Q(x), 0 \leq x \leq 1, $$ $$ y(0) = \alpha, $$ $$ y(1) = \beta, $$ where P(x) and Q(x) are continuous functions with $P(x) \geq 0, x \in [0, 1]$.
In the present study, radiation shielding and protection ability of prepared Flyash-lime-Gypsum (FaLG) bricks has been studied in terms of energy exposure build up factors and dose parameters. The energy exposure build up factors of Flyash-lime-Gypsum (FaLG) bricks have been calculated for the energy range of 0.015 MeV-15 MeV and for penetration depth upto 40 mfp directly using a new and simplified Piecewise Linear Spline Interpolation Method (PLSIM). In this new method, the calculations of G.P fitting parameters are not required. The verification and accuracy of this new method has been checked by comparing the results of exposure build up factor for NBS concrete calculated using present method with the results obtained by using G.P fitting method. Further, the relative dose distribution and reduced exposure dose rate for various radioactive isotopes without any shielding material and with Flyash-lime-Gypsum (FaLG) bricks have been calculated in the energy range of 59.59-1332 keV. On the basis of the obtained results, it has been reported that the prepared Flyash-lime-Gypsum (FaLG) bricks possess satisfactory radiation shielding properties and can be used as environmentally safe storage facilities for low level nuclear waste.
In this study the stem analysis program, which can be operated with personal computer was developed to reduce time and cost of calculation, and to increase accuracy of analysis. The stem analysis method used in this program was compared with other methods. The results obtained were as follows : The value, 1/100mm measured from the latest annual ring measurement machine (Jahrringme${\beta}$geraete Johan Type II) was automatically inputed to the computer and saved into given file name. Turbo Pascal program was written to do this. The measured data was analyzed by stem analysis calculation program written by Fortran-77. Volume and height increments were approximated by spline function, and diameter of the stem disk was calculated by quadratic mean method. The increment values calculated by the programs were printed annually and in every five-year. Stem analysis diagram and several increment graphs were also easily printed. The result compared between those analysis methods showed that quadratic mean could reduce the error caused from eccentric pith. When the stem taper curve method, approximated by spline function, was used in the calculation of tree height and volume, increments would be more exactly calculated.

Pine wilt disease has known as a serious forest disease in East Asia such as Japan, Korea and China. Fumigation and burning are considered as best way to treat infected tree at early detection. For investigate spectral reflectance characteristics of infected trees, periodic measurement has been done in both infected and non-infected trees. Infected and non-infected trees' reflectance (400 nm~2,500 nm wavelength) are detected from June to October with GER3700 spectrometer. Noise of reflectance data was corrected using cubic spline interpolation method. Reflectance was changed in most of infected trees with ranges Red (600 nm~700 nm) and Middle Infrared (1,400 nm~1,500 nm) within two months after injected by Pine Wood nematode (PWN), but there was no differences in non-infected trees. Infected and non-infected trees were compared statistically in each period. As a result, we found that a statistically significant difference was occurred at Red and Middle Infrared (MIR) 2 months after injection (p<0.05), however, no significant difference in near infrared (p>0.05). Therefore, the early detection of infested pine trees by PWN may possible through detecting the change of spectral reflectance at red and MIR.
Purpose The principle of nuclear medicine test is divided into two main categories: competition(radioimmunoassay, RIA) and noncompetitive reaction(Immunoradiometric assay, IRMA). It is known that the curve fitting method, which is commonly used in inspection field, uses Spline interpolation in RIA method and Linear interpolation method in IRMA method. Among them, the insulin test using the IRMA test showed a significant difference, especially at low concentrations, despite the same algorithm of linear interpolation between fully automated radio immunoassay analyzers. In this study, we aim to obtain results from applying two different of algorithm using fully automated radio immunoassay analyzers including Gamma pro, Gamma 10, Cobra, and SR300. Materials and Methods A total of 30 test samples were selected for the test of TSH, ferritin, C-peptide, and insulin serum levels. Test was performed by IRMA method. We compared the difference in the results of applying the linear interpolation method and the spline interpolation method to Gamma Pro, Gamma 10, Cobra, and SR300 equipment. Results Two-way ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. The significance level was applied as P <0.05. The results of TSH, ferritin, C-peptide, and insulin tests were compared between the fully automated radio immunoassay analyzers. There was a significant difference between ferritin, C-peptide, and insulin serum levels(P<0.001). TSH didn't show any significant different between the devices(P=0.29). In the difference between linear and spline interpolation, there was no significant difference between insulin test(P=0.08), TSH test(P=0.81), and Ferritin test(P=0.06). However, C-peptide test showed a significant difference(P=0.03). Especially, the insulin test showed significant difference in lower ranges. As a result of comparing and analyzing the difference between the two interpolation methods, the devices in the low concentration group showed significant difference(P<0.001). Conclusion In case of new equipment in the laboratory it is necessary to recognize that there is a difference in the curve fitting method for each automated radio immunoassay analyzers in the low concentration area when the principle of inspection is IRMA method.
