Monitoring of III-V semiconductor surface by In-situ Surface PhotoAbsorption

  • We present the investigation on P- and As-desorption process from the (001) InP surface in metal organic chemical vapor deposition using surface photoabsorption (SPA). The monochromatic SPA signal showed rapid initial increase to reach In-stabilized surface value after $PH_3$ was turned off, but in case of As-desorption, the signal showed clear existence of a metastable state after the $AsH_3$ was turned off. The SPA spectra at each stable surfaces were taken to confirm the interpretation. This result indicates that the As-desorption process should be understood as a two-step process, in contrast to P-desorption of one-step process.

Enzymatic Properties of Protease from the Hepatopancreas of Shrimp, Penaeus japonicus

  • A protease purified from hepatopancreas of shrimp, Penaeus japonicus, had maximum activity at $70^{\circ}C$ and in neutral and alkaline pH ranges. Specific activity at optimum reaction condition of the protease was estimated to be approximately 12 U/mg/min. The protease was stable in neutral and alkaline pH ranges and activity was retained after heat treatment at $50^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Apparent $K_m$ and $V_{max}$ value against casein substrate were estimated to be $0.29\%$ and $7.8see^{-1}$, respectively, and those against N-CBZ-L-tyrosine p-nitropheny1 ester (CBZ­Tyr-NE) were 0.38 mM and $2,400 see^{-1}$, respectively. The N-termina1 sequence of the protease showed high homology to the trypsin from same species and the proteases from shrimp. Myosin heavy chain (MHC) from shrimp tail meat was the most susceptible to the protease and actin/tropomyosin were degraded progressively during 4 hr incubation, but to a lesser degree than MHC.

  • Electro-optic modulators based on 25 monolayer langmuir-blodgett films of vinylidene fluoride and trifluoroethylene, P(VDF-TrFE), were fabricated. The LB films were prepared by transferring the monolayers on to an ITO coated glass with a surface pressure of 5 dyne/cm by use of the langmuir-schaefer deposition method. Measurement of the electro-optic coefficient has been carried out using a simple reflection techique. The E/O coefficient was found to be 154.9 pm/V and that value remained stable for at least 50 days.

  • Bioprospecting has been widely used to assess the economic potential of different plant species and their value-addition. Prospecting for biological material like plants with medicinal or other economically valuable properties like fibre or oil is becoming a dynamic activity. Our folklore with embedded cultural heritage has tremendous possibilities and potential for bioprospecting. This forest region of Western Rajasthan is enriched with diverse vegetational wealth, if subjected to bioprospecting may prove to be a boon for the society.

  • Let G = (V, E) be a connected finite graph. We study the existence of solutions for the following generalized Chern-Simons equation on G $${\Delta}u={\lambda}e^u(e^u-1)^5+4{\pi}\sum_{s=1}^{N}\delta_{ps}$$, where λ > 0, δps is the Dirac mass at the vertex ps, and p1, p2, . . . , pN are arbitrarily chosen distinct vertices on the graph. We show that there exists a critical value $\hat{\lambda}$ such that when λ > $\hat{\lambda}$, the generalized Chern-Simons equation has at least two solutions, when λ = $\hat{\lambda}$, the generalized Chern-Simons equation has a solution, and when λ < $\hat{\lambda}$, the generalized Chern-Simons equation has no solution.

Performance of Growing/Finishing Pigs Fed Hulled and Dehulled Peas With and Without Dietary Enzymes

  • Eighty crossbred pigs (Large White x Landrace) weighing 9.9 kg were assigned on the basis of sex, weight and Jitter to one of five dietary treatments in a factorial $(5\;treatments\;{\times}2\;sexes)$ arrangement to compare the nutritive value of hulled and dehulled peas fed with or without enzyme (0.25% Allzyme PF and 0.5% Biogal-S). A barley and soybean meal diet served as a control. Eight castrates and eight gilts were fed each diet. Digestibility coefficients for dry matter, crude protein and energy were higher for diets containing dehulled peas than hulled peas. In addition, enzyme supplementation modestly increased the digestibility of all three nutrients. Over the entire experimental period (9.9 to 103.3 kg), there were no performance differences (p>0.05) between pigs fed soybean meal based diets or diets based on any of the pea products. In addition, there were no differences in performance between pigs fed diets containing hulled or dehulled peas or between pigs fed diets with or without dietary enzyme. Castrates gained weight significantly faster, consumed more feed but had a poorer feed conversion than gilts (p<0.05). There were no differences in carcass traits between pigs fed diets based on soybean meal or any of the pea products. Carcass traits were similar for pigs fed hulled or dehulled peas while enzyme supplementation also had no effect on carcass data. Castrate pigs had a lower carcass value index, estimated lean yield and loin lean depth (p<0.05). Loin fat depth was greater for castrates than gilts (p<0.05). The overall results of this experiment provide little support for the need for enzyme supplementation of pea based diets fed to swine. In addition, dehulling did not appreciably improve the nutritive value of peas. Therefore, since the process adds to the cost of the raw product, its use is unlikely to be economical.

Potential of polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) for delivery Jembrana disease DNA vaccine Model (pEGFP-C1-tat)

  • Background: The development of a vaccine for Jembrana disease is needed to prevent losses in Indonesia's Bali cattle industry. A DNA vaccine model (pEGFP-C1-tat) that requires a functional delivery system will be developed. Polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) may have potential as a delivery system for the vaccine model. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the in vitro potential of PLGA as a delivery system for pEGFP-C1-tat. Methods: Consensus and codon optimization for the tat gene was completed using a bioinformatic method, and the product was inserted into a pEGFP-C1 vector. Cloning of the pEGFP-C1-tat was successfully performed, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction analysis confirmed DNA isolation. PLGA-pEGFP-C1-tat solutions were prepared for encapsulated formulation testing, physicochemical characterization, stability testing with DNase I, and cytotoxicity testing. The PLGA-pEGFP-C1-tat solutions were transfected in HeLa cells, and gene expression was observed by fluorescent microscopy and real-time PCR. Results: The successful acquisition of transformant bacteria was confirmed by PCR. The PLGA:DNA:polyvinyl alcohol ratio formulation with optimal encapsulation was 4%:0.5%:2%, physicochemical characterization of PLGA revealed a polydispersity index value of 0.246, a particle size of 925 nm, and a zeta potential value of -2.31 mV. PLGA succeeded in protecting pEGFP-C1-tat from enzymatic degradation, and the percentage viability from the cytotoxicity test of PLGA-pEGFP-C1-tat was 98.03%. The PLGA-pEGFP-C1-tat demonstrated luminescence of the EGFP-tat fusion protein and mRNA transcription was detected. Conclusions: PLGA has good potential as a delivery system for pEGFP-C1-tat.

산 오염수 전처리용 침전 및 중화 특성 (Characterization of Sedimentation and pH Neutralization as Pretreatment of Acid Contaminated Water)

  • 본 연구에서는 산 오염수 전처리를 위한 침전 및 중화 공정에 대해 연구하였다. 침전 및 중화 공정은 오염물질 흡착, 휘발, 생분해 혹은 산화 등과 같은 제거공정 전에 필요한 전처리 공정으로 좀 더 효과적인 제거효율을 도출해 내기 위함이다. 침전 공정에선 일반적인 퇴적토인 부산 감천항의 퇴적토를 이용하여 침강 속도, 입자 균등계수, 곡률계수 및 입도지수를 파악하였고, 이를 위해 스테인리스 스틸로 구성된 표준체 판을 사용하였다. 각 표준체의 망 단위는 4, 10, 20, 40, 80, 100, 200이며 조립된 체 상부에 건조된 퇴적토를 투하시킨 후 진동을 가하여 입경별로 분류하였다. 입경별로 분류한 건조퇴적토는 1L 크기의 임호프콘(Imhoff cone)과 200mL 메스실린더에 침강시켰다. 각 입경별 침강속도를 구한 후 스토크스의 법칙(Stokes' law)에 따라 입자의 밀도를 계산하였다. 그 결과, 사용된 건조퇴적토의 평균 입자밀도는 1.93g/cm3였으며 침강속도가 가장 낮은 값은 0.11cm/s이였다. 침강속도와 입자 밀도를 통하여 화학사고 시 입자의 침전 위치나 퇴적 가능한 범위를 알아 대비할 수 있다. 중화 공정의 경우 강한 산성을 지니고 있는 질산과 황산을 사용하였고 중화제로 수산화나트륨과 산화칼슘을 사용하였다. 질산과 황산의 산도는 2, 3, 4, 5로 선정하였고 수산화나트륨과 산화칼슘(0.1, 0.01, 0.001M)를 사용하여 중화제 사용량이 pH 7의 조건을 맞췄을 때 5v/v% 미만으로 나올 수 있는 값을 도출하였다. 가장 농도가 높은 0.1M의 중화제의 경우 가장 낮은 pH 2를 제외하고 모두 5v/v% 미만으로 충족시켰고, 0.01M의 중화제는 일부 pH에서만 충족되었으며, 농도가 가장 낮은 0.001M의 중화제는 모든 pH에서 5v/v% 미만의 조건을 충족시키지 못 하였다. 질산과 황산 모두 산화칼슘이 수산화나트륨 보다 더 적은 부피비를 차지하였고 중화에 적합한 효과를 도출하였다.

유동성 레진 수복술에서 접착제 중합 여부에 따른 미세누출과 전단결합강도에 관한 연구 (THE EFFECTS OF PHOTOPOLYMERIZATION OF ADHESIVE ON SHEAR BOND STRENGTH AND MICROLEAKAGE OF FLOWABLE RESIN RESTORATION)

  • 본 연구는 소아 환자의 유동성 복합 레진 수복 시 접착제의 사용 및 중합 여부 그리고 접착제 종류에 따른 수복물 변연의 미세누출과 전단결합강도를 비교함으로써 치료 시간의 단축 가능성을 타진해보고자 시행하였다. 미세누출을 평가하기 위해 우식이 없거나 법랑질에 제한된 우식이 있는 상, 하악 소구치 84개, 전단결합강도 평가를 위해 협설면에 우식이나 결손부가 없는 대구치 70개를 각각 준비하여 사용하였다. 접착 시스템의 종류에 따라 총 7군을 설정하여 I군과 II군은 Single $Bond^{TM}$, III군과 IV군은 AQ Bond $Plus^{TM}$, Ⅴ군과 Ⅵ군은 Prompt L-$Pop^{TM}$ 그리고 접착 시스템을 사용하지 않고 레진을 충전하는 VII군을 대조군으로 설정하였다. 미세누출과 전단결합강도를 측정하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 미세누출 평가 결과 Single $Bond^{TM}$를 사용한 I군과 II군이 다른 군에 비하여 낮은 염료 침투를 나타냈다. I군과 II군 사이의 염료 침투 양상은 유사하게 나타났다. 2. 전단결합측정결과 I군과 II군이 다른 군에 비하여 높은 수치를 나타냈으며 통계적 유의차를 보였다(p<0.05). I군과 II군 사이에는 유의차가 없었다(p>0.05). 3. I군과 II군, III군과 IV군, V군과 VI군 사이에는 통계적 유의차가 없었다(p>0.05). 4. VII군은 I, II군과 V, VI군에 비하여 통계적 유의차가 있게 낮은 전단 결합 강도를 보였으며(p<0.05) III, IV군과는 보다 낮은 수치를 보였으나 통계학적 유의차는 없었다(p>0.05).

Modeling Nutrient Supply to Ruminants: Frost-damaged Wheat vs. Normal Wheat

  • The objectives of this study were to use the NRC-2001 model and DVE/OEB system to model potential nutrient supply to ruminants and to compare frost damaged (also called "frozen" wheat with normal wheat. Quantitative predictions were made in terms of: i) Truly absorbed rumen synthesized microbial protein in the small intestine; ii) Truly absorbed rumen undegraded feed protein in the small intestine; iii) Endogenous protein in the digestive tract; iv). Total truly absorbed protein in the small intestine; and v). Protein degraded balance. The overall yield losses of the frozen wheat were 24%. Results showed that using the DVE/OEB system to predict the potential nutrient supply, the frozen wheat had similar truly absorbed rumen synthesized microbial protein (65 vs. 66 g/kg DM; p>0.05), tended to have lower truly absorbed rumen undegraded feed protein (39 vs. 53 g/kg DM; p<0.10) and had higher endogenous protein (14 vs. 9 g/kg DM; p<0.05). Total truly absorbed protein in the small intestine was significantly lower (89 vs. 110 g/kg DM, p<0.05) in the frozen wheat. The protein degraded balance was similar and both were negative (-2 vs. -1 g/kg DM). Using the NRC-2001 model to predict the potential nutrient supply, the frozen wheat also had similar truly absorbed rumen synthesized microbial protein (average 56 g/kg DM; p>0.05), tended to have lower truly absorbed rumen undegraded feed protein (35 vs. 48, g/kg DM; p<0.10) and had similar endogenous protein (average 4 g/kg DM; p>0.05). Total truly absorbed protein in the small intestine was significantly lower (95 vs. 108 g/kg DM, p<0.05) in the frozen wheat. The protein degraded balance was not significantly different and both were negative (-16 vs. -19 g/kg DM). In conclusion, both models predict lower protein value and negative protein degraded balance in the frozen wheat. The frost damage to the wheat reduced nutrient content and availability and thus reduced nutrient supply to ruminants by around 12 to 19%.
