The Effect of Particle Size on Ignition Characteristics of Pulverized High-Volatile Bituminous Coal

  • A cylindrical-shape, horizontal furnace was used to investigate the effect of particle size on the pulverized coal combustion behavior. Three differently-sized fractions (5, 30, and 44 microns in average diameter) of high-volatile bituminous coal, were burned in the test furnace. Ignition characteristics of pulverized coal flame were determined through the amount of methane in the carrier gas for the self-sustaining flame. Easiest ignition occurred with the immediately-sized coal particles. Ignition of coal jet flame appeared to occur through a gas-phase homogeneous process for particles larger than 30 microns. Below this limiting size, heterogeneous process probably dominated ignition of coal flame. Oxygen concentration of combustion air was varied up to 50%, to determine the oxygen-enrichment effect on the coal ignition behavior. Oxygen enrichment of primary air assisted ignition behavior of pulverized coal flame. However, enrichment of secondary air didn't produce any effect on the ignition behavior.

Reaction Characteristics and Kinetics of Ni-bsed Oxygen Carrier for Chemical Looping Combustion (매체순환연소를 위한 Ni계열 산소전달입자의 반응 특성 및 반응 모델)

  • Reaction characteristics and kinetics of a oxygen carrier (OCN717-R1SU) for chemical looping combustion (CLC) have been investigated using TGA by changing gas concentration (10-30 vol.% $CH_4$) and reaction temperature ($825-900^{\circ}C$). Reaction rate of OCN717-R1SU increased as temperature increased and it was found that reaction is delayed at the initial reaction regime. Johnson-Mehl-Avrami (JMA) model was adopted to explain the reaction phenomenon. The activation energy (E) determined by JMA model in reduction reaction of OCN717-R1SU is $151.7{\pm}2.03kJ/mol$ and pre-exponential factor and JMA exponent were also obtained. The parameters calculated in this study will be applied in design of the reactor and operation conditions for CLC process.

  • Batch type reduction-oxidation tests were performed to check effects of temperature, pressure, gas velocity, and capacity on reduction characteristics of mass produced particle in a 0.5 MWth chemical looping combustion system. The fuel conversion and the CO2 selectivity increased as the temperature increased and as the gas velocity decreased. However the CO2 selectivity showed the maximum and decreased as the capacity increased because the CO emission increased. The results show that high temperature, low gas velocity and low inert gas concentration are preferable to ensure high reactivity of oxygen carrier in the fuel reactor.

  • When we use NiO based particle as an oxygen carrier in a chemical looping combustion system, the fuel conversion and the $CO_2$ selectivity decreased with increasing reaction temperature within high temperature range (> $900^{\circ}C$) due to the increment of exhaust CO concentration from reduction reactor. To improve reduction reactivity at high temperature, the applicable metal oxide component was selected by calculation of the equilibrium CO concentration of metal oxide components. After that, feasibility of reduction reactivity improvement at high temperature was checked by using solid mixture of the selected metal oxide particle and NiO based oxygen carrier. The reactivity was measured and investigated using batch type fluidized bed. The solid mixture of $Co_3O_4/CoAl_2O_4$(10%) and OCN706-1100(90%) showed higher fuel conversion, higher $CO_2$ selectivity and lower CO concentration than OCN706-1100(100%) cases. Consequently, we could conclude that improvement of reduction reactivity at high temperature range by adding some $Co_3O_4$ based oxygen carrier was feasible.

  • $H_2$ production by chemical looping is an efficient method to convert hydrocarbon fuel into hydrogen with the simultaneous capture of concentrated $CO_2$. This process involves the use of an iron based oxygen carrier that transfers pure oxygen from oxidizing gases to fuels by alternating reduction and oxidation (redox) reactions. The enhanced reactivities of copper oxide doped iron-based oxygen carrier were reported, however, the fundamental understandings on the interaction between $Fe_2O_3$ and CuO are still lacking. In this study, we studied the effect of dopant of CuO to $Fe_2O_3/ZrO_2$ particle on the morphological changes and the associated reactivity using various methods such as SEM/EDX, XRD, BET, TPR, XPS, and TGA. It was found that copper oxide acted as a chemical promoter that change chemical environment in the iron based oxygen carrier as well as a structural promoter which inhibit the agglomeration. The enhanced reduction reactivity was mainly ascribed to the increase in concentration of $Fe^{2+}$ on the surface, resulting in formation of charge imbalance and oxygen vacancies. The CuO doped $Fe_2O_3/ZrO_2$ particle also showed the improved reactivity in the steam oxidation compared to $Fe_2O_3/ZrO_2$ particle probably due to acting as a structural promoter inhibiting the agglomeration of iron species.

  • To develop a pressurized chemical looping combustor, effect of pressure on minimum fluidization velocity and transition velocity to fast fluidization was investigated in a two-interconnected pressurized fluidized bed system using oxygen carrier particle. The minimum fluidization velocity was measured by bed pressure drop measurement with variation of gas velocity. The measured minimum fluidization velocity decreased as the pressure increased. The transition velocity to fast fluidization was measured by emptying time method and decreased as the pressure increased. Gas velocity in the fuel reactor should be greater than the minimum fluidization velocity and gas velocity in the air reactor should be greater than the transition velocity to fast fluidization to ensure proper operation of two interconnected fluidized bed system.

  • Continuous solid circulation test at high temperature and high pressure conditions and batch type reduction-oxidation tests were performed to check feasibility of a 0.5 MWth chemical looping combustion system. Pressure drop profiles were maintained stable during continuous solid circulation up to 16 hours. Therefore, we could conclude that the solid circulation between an air reactor and a fuel reactor could be smooth and stable. The measured fuel conversion and $CO_2$ selectivity were high enough even at high capacity and even after cyclic tests. Therefore, we could expect high reactivity of oxygen carrier at real operation condition.

  • To develop a chemical-looping combustion technology, conceptual design of 50 kW thermal chemical-looping combustor, which is composed of two interconnected pressurized circulating fluidized beds, was performed by means of mass and energy balance calculations. A riser type fast fluidized bed was selected as an oxidizer and a bubbling fluidized bed was selected as a reducer by mass balance for the chemical-looping combustor. Calculated values of bed mass, solid circulation flux, and reactor dimension by mass and energy balance calculations were suitable for construction and operation of chemical-looping combustor. It is concluded from the comparison of the design results and operating values of commercial circulating fluidized bed that the process outline is realistic. Moreover, the previous results support that oxygen carrier particle, NiO/bentonite, fulfills the conversion rates needed for the proposed design. The effects of system capacity, metal oxide content in a oxygen carrier particle, amount of steam input, gas velocity, and solid depth on design values were investigated and the changes in the system performance can be estimated by proposed design tool.
