  • Along with the development of network, more and more functions and services are required by users, while traditional network fails to support all of them. Although overlay is a good solution to some demands, using them in an efficient, scalable way is still a problem. This paper puts forward a framework on how to construct an efficient, scalable overlay mesh in real network. Main differences between other overlays and ours are that our overlay mesh processes some nice features including class-of-service(CoS) and traffic engineering(TE). It embeds the end-to-end optimal traffic control law which can distribute traffic in an optimal way. Then, an example is given for better understanding the framework. Particularly, besides good scalability, and failure recovery, it possesses other characteristics such as routing simplicity, self-organization, etc. In such an overlay mesh, an applicable source routing scheme called hierarchical source routing is used to transmit data packet based on UDP protocol. Finally, a guideline derived from a number of simulations is proposed on how to set various parameters in this overlay mesh, which makes the overlay more efficient.

  • This paper presents an efficient overlay multicast routing protocol (ROMP) and its architecture. ROMP using GPS and region map stands on the basis of scalable 2-tiered multicast architecture and maintains a global overlay multicast tree through reactive fashion. With this approach, the coarse-grain location-awareness for an efficient overlay multicasting and the determination of hot-spot area for efficient data delivery are feasible. The simulation results show that the localized control packets of ROMP prevent the overlay control packets from squandering the physical network resources.

  • Overlay multicast is an emerging technology for next generation Internet service to various groups of multicast members. It will take the place of traditional IP multicast which is not widely deployed due to the complex nature of its technology. The overlay multicast which effectively reduces processing at IP routers can be easily deployed on top of a densely connected IP network. An end-to-end delay problem is considered which is serious in the multicast service. To periodically optimize the route in the overlay network and to minimize the maximum end-to-end delay, overlay multicast tree is investigated with genetic Algorithm. Outstanding experimental results are obtained which is comparable to the optimal solution and the tabu search.

  • In order to achieve high capacity and reliable link quality of the overlay convergent networks with the cognitive networking based on the advanced capability of the mobile terminal, a Distributed Wireless Communication System (DWCS) can provide the capability of enhancing the link quality. This paper has considered virtual cell: the Dual Virtual Cell (DVC), and also proposes DVC employment strategy based on radio resource monitering. The considered system constructs DVC for multi-user high-rate data transmission, and the DWCS system exploits space-time trellis codes i.e., STTC to improve a spectral efficiency. The effects of imperfect CSI(channel state information) on the system performance has also been investigated.

  • Today the various types of communication and application service are provided by the development of Internet and IP technologies. It is expected to be extended the service domain of two networks through the interconnecting P2PSIP overlay which is highlighted as an important technologies for Internet based services and IMS(IP Multimedia Subsystem) which is the new architecture adopted in the evolution of NGN. Therefore, this paper explains the possible methods of the service expansion with interconnecting P2PSIP overlay and IMS network. Specially this paper suggests the interconnection architectures of P2PSIP overlay and IMS network as subscriber's types and analyzes the traffic analysis model and session set up delay characteristics by simulation model. As a results, this paper shows that the interconnection architecture using gateway AS(Application Server) is the excellent method to interconnect the IMS in case of P2PSIP overlay only subscriber, and that interconnection architecture using I-CSCF is good method to interconnect the IMS in case of P2PSIP overlay and IMS subscriber.

  • Hierarchical overlay of heterogeneous wireless cells is considered as a promising architecture for next-generation wireless networks. This paper considers a special form of such architecture, WWAN/WLAN two-hop wireless relay networks. We first describe an undesirable scheduling phenomenon that the conventional proportional fair algorithm can cause in such networks. We, then, propose an enhanced proportional fair scheduling to remedy this problem. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme via a simulation of UMTS/WLAN networks using NS-2.

  • The importance of mobility management is becoming to be one of the upcomming issues to be addressed to provide the converged services and the convergence of the heterogeneous network environments. In this paper, the new user mobility management scheme which can be utilized to model the user's mobility behaviors for interworking with heterogeneous overlay convergent networks under the time-varying radio propagation environment has been proposed. Thus user mobility management scheme based on user mobility model is considered in order to optimize the dwell time of users in the overlay convergent networks. This Mobile IP user mobility management will be very useful to model the user mobility behaviors and can be used to estimate the signaling traffic and frequency spectrum demands for massive data transfer for the heterogeneous overlay convergent networks.

  • In this paper, to manage the efficient control of IP packet flows crossing multi-provider networks such as Internet, we propose a SDN(Software Defined Networking)-based policy controller. The proposed policy controller leverages the visibility of underlying network and manages both virtual links and ports to inter-connect networking elements. The controller is capable of quickly composing multiple on-demand virtual networks and dynamically managing the composed networks, thus it can provide more flexible and optimized overlay networking environment to end-user applications. More specifically, we first look into the proposed structure and features of policy controller. With two kinds of service applications, we then verify the applicability of the proposed controller by evaluating its service composition time.

  • A peer-to-peer(P2P) network is inherently vulnerable to malicious attacks from participating peers because of its open, flat, and autonomous nature. This paper addresses the problem of effectively defending from active attacks of malicious peers at bootstrapping phase and at online phase, respectively. We propose a secure membership handling protocol to protect the assignment of ID related things to a newly joining peer with the aid of a trusted entity in the network. The trusted entities are only consulted when new peers are joining and are otherwise uninvolved in the actions of the P2P networks. For the attacks in online phase, we present a novel message structure applied to each message transmitted on the P2P overlay. It facilitates the detection of message alteration, replay attack and a message with wrong information. Taken together, the proposed techniques deter malicious peers from cheating and encourage good peers to obey the protocol of the network. The techniques assume a basic P2P overlay network model, which is generic enough to encompass a large class of well-known P2P networks, either unstructured or not.

  • Many distributed applications build overlays on top of the Internet. Several unsolved issues at the network layer can explain this trend to implement network services such as multicast, mobility, and security at the application layer. On one hand, overlays creating basic topologies are usually limited in flexibility and scalability. On the other hand, overlays creating complex topologies require some form of application level addressing, routing, and naming mechanisms. Our aim is to design an efficient and robust addressing, routing, and naming infrastructure for these complex overlays. Our only assumption is that they are deployed over the Internet topology. Applications that use our middleware will be relieved from managing their own overlay topologies. Our infrastructure is based on the separation of the naming and the addressing planes and provides a convergence plane for the current heterogeneous Internet environment. To implement this property, we have designed a scalable distributed k-resilient name to address binding system. This paper describes the design of our overlay infrastructure and presents performance results concerning its routing scalability, its path inflation efficiency and its resilience to network dynamics.
