  • We have performed computer simulation to obtain electro-optic chracteristics of reflective liquid crystal display (LCD) using wide viewing angle LC mode, fringe field switching(FFS). Unlike other reflective LCD modes, in the FFS mode, the LC director in plance so an application to reflective display consisted of polarizer, LC layer and reflector is possible. when an incident light is 550mm, the optimal cell retardation value is 0.1365${\mu}$m and the efficiency of reflectivity is high over 90% with very little wavelength dispersion. Further, we have studied a new reflective display with polarizer, optical compensation film with half plate, LC plus reflector. The display with optimized cell parameters shows high contrast ratio (CR) over 130 with high light efficiency over 90% at normal direction and the CR greater than 5 exists over 60$^{\circ}$ of polar angle in all directions.

  • The modal characteristics of the photonic crystal fibers are analyzed using the reliable and efficient plane wave expansion method. The mode profile, effective index and group velocity dispersion are obtained by solving Maxwell's vector wave equations without any approximation. The zero dispersion condition of a photonic crystal fiber is derived over a wide range of wavelengths. Higher-order modes are also easily found as a by-product of the plane wave expansion method. This method can be used to quickly and accurately design various optical properties of photonic crystal fibers.

  • Sandwich panel made by foamed styrene and ployuretane has been used generally in the construction area because of the high thermal conductivity and light weight but they occur harmful gases to both bodies and environments in the high temperature over $50^{\circ}C$. So, the purpose of this study is to investigate the physical properties of light-weight panel using the non-structural lightweight aggregate as a part of the substitution of foamed styrene and ployuretane. This paper dealt with the effect of the addition of polymer dispersion such as SBR, St/BA-1 and St/BA-2 having polymer-cement ratio as 5, 10, 15% and the filling ratio of continuous void as 50, 60% on the strength of polymer-modified sandwich panel core. From the results, we could know that the compressive and flexural strength of the sandwich panel core using non-structural lightweight aggregate and polymer dispersion such as SBR, St/BA-1 and St/BA-2 tended to be increased with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio and the filling ratio of continuous void.

  • Current instrumentation activities and the open user status of Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO) are reviewed. There are two telescopes in operation and one telescope under reforming at OAO. The 188cm telescope is provided for open use for more than 200 nights in a year. The typical over-subscription rate of observation proposals for the 188cm telescope is ${\~}$ 1.5 - 2. The 50cm telescope is dedicated to $\gamma$-ray burst optical follow-up observation and is operated in collaboration with Tokyo Institute of Technology. The 91cm telescope will become a new very wide field near-infrared camera in two years. The high-dispersion echelle spectrograph (HIDES) is the current primary instrument for the open use of the 188cm telescope. Two new instruments, an infrared multi-purpose camera (ISLE) and an optical low-dispersion spectrograph (KOOLS), are now under development. They will be open as common use instruments in 2006.

  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been used as motor fuel due to its low emissions and low cost. A liquid direct injection system into a cylinder was suggested as a next generation system to maximize a fuel economy as well as a power. This study addresses the analysis of the LPG spray injecting from single hole injector. Two different test conditions are given, which are a fully developed spray case with various injection pressures and a developing spray case with ambient pressure variation. The LPG spray photographs are compared with the sprays of gasoline and diesel fuel at the same conditions, and the spray angles and penetration lengths are also compared, and then the spray behavior is analyzed. The LPG spray photos show that the dispersion characteristic depends very sensitively on the ambient pressure soon after injection. The spray angle is very wide in a low ambient pressure condition until the saturated pressure, but the angle is quickly reduced at the condition over the pressure. However, the down stream of the LPG spray shows much wider dispersion and less penetration than those of gasoline and diesel sprays regardless ambient pressure condition.

  • Constrained Bayesian estimates overcome the over shrinkness toward the mean which usual Bayes and empirical Bayes estimates produce by matching first and second empirical moments; subsequently, a constrained Bayes estimate is recommended to use in case the research objective is to produce a histogram of the estimates considering the location and dispersion. The well-known squared error loss function exclusively emphasizes the precision of estimation and may lead to biased estimators. Thus, the balanced loss function is suggested to reflect both goodness of fit and precision of estimation. In insurance pricing, the accurate location estimates of risk and also dispersion estimates of each risk group should be considered under proper loss function. In this paper, by applying these two ideas, the benefit of the constrained Bayes estimates and balanced loss function will be discussed; in addition, application effectiveness will be proved through an analysis of real insurance accident data.

  • An extension of the modified leap-frog scheme is made to solve the nonlinear shallow-water equations. In the extended model. the physical dispersion of the Boussinesq equations is replaced by the numerical dispersion resulted from the leap-frog finite difference scheme. The model is used to simulate propagations of a solitary wave over a constant water depth and a linearly varying water depth. Obtained numerical results are compared with available analytical and other numerical solutions. A reasonable agreement is observed.

  • A novel X-band high speed frequency sweep signal generator based on a tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) incorporating a frequency-swept laser is presented and the theoretical fundamentals of the design are explained. A prototype of the generator with tuning range from 8.8552 GHz to 10.3992 GHz and a fine step about 8 MHz is achieved. The generated radiofrequency signal with a single sideband (SSB) phase noise lower than -100 dBc/Hz@10KHz is experimentally demonstrated within the whole tunable range, without any narrow RF band-pass filters in the loop. And the tuning speed of the frequency sweep signal generator can reach to over 1 GHz/s benefiting from applying a novel dispersion compensation modular instead of several tens of kilometers of optical fiber delay line in the system.

  • This paper discusses the strength properties of the polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powders, which is widely used for the manufacture of prepackaged-type polymer-modified mortar products at present. The polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powders are prepared with various polymer-cement ratios, and tested for air content, flexural and compressive strengths, and tensile strength. The strength properties are almost the same as those of polymer dispersion-modified mortars, depending on the polymer-cement ratios, and are improved over unmodified mortar. In particular, between tensile strength and glass transition point of polymer powder have a high correlation. It is concluded from the test results that polymer-modified mortars using redispersible polymer powders can be used in the same manner as ordinary polymer dispersion-modified mortars.

  • We present the derived kinematic characteristics of low-${\alpha}$ thin-disk and high-${\alpha}$ thick-disk stars in the Milky Way, investigated with a sample of about 33,900 G- and K-type dwarfs from the Sloan Extension for Galactic Understanding and Exploration (SEGUE). Based on the level of ${\alpha}$-element enhancement as a function of [Fe/H], we separate our sample into thin- and thick-disk stars and then derive mean velocity, velocity dispersion, and velocity gradients for the U, V and W velocity components, respectively, as well as the orbital eccentricity distribution. There are notable gradients in the V velocity over [Fe/H] in both populations: -23 km s-1 dex-1 for the thin disk and +44 km s-1 dex-1 for the thick disk. The velocity dispersion of the thick disk decrease with increasing [Fe/H], while the velocity.
