Optimization of Microwave Absorbing Performance in Polymer Matrix Composite Laminate (고분자 기기 복합재료 적층판의 전자파 흡수 최적화)

  • In this study, An optimization code that can design microwave absorbing composite laminates is developed, and 3-layered microwave absorbing composite laminates are developed by optimizing the thickness of each layer. The layers are 3 different composite laminates. Many variables including lay-up angles of electromagnetically orthotropic composite layer can be considered in this code. The developed laminate is composed of an impedance matching layer of glass/epoxy fabric laminate, a glass/epoxy fabric laminate layer containing aluminum filler and carbon/epoxy fabric laminate layer. Permittivities of the materials are obtained using a network analyzer and a coaxial air line.

  • The most of the design engineers for construction has academic background of bachelors degree. Theories for advanced composite structures are too difficult for such engineers and some simple but accurate enough methods are necessary. The senior author has reported that some laminate orientations have decreasing values of B$_{16}$, B$_{26}$, D$_{26}$, and D$_{26}$ stiffnesses as the ply number increases. Such plates above behave as special orthotropic plates and simple formulas developed by the senior author[1, 3] can be used. Most of the bridge and building slabs on girders have large aspect ratios. For such cases further simplification is possible by neglecting the effect of the longitudinal moment terms(M$_{x}$) on the relevant partial differential equations of equilibrium.   • A method of calculating the natural frequency corresponding to the modes of vibration of beams and tower structures, with irregular cross sections and with arbitrary boundary conditions was developed and reported by Kim, D. H. in 1974. In this paper, the result of application of this method to the three span continuous reinforced concrete bridge with elastic intermediate supports is presented. Such bridge represents either concrete or sandwich type three span bridge on polymeric supports for passive control or on actuators for active control The concrete slab is considered as a special orthotropic plate. The influence of the modulus of the foundation and $D_{22}$, $D_{12}$, $D_{66}$ stiffnesses on the natural frequency is thoroughly studied.

  • Mixed mode fracture problem is analyzed for the finite orthotropic plate where an inclined crack parallel to the fiber direction is centrally placed. Modified mapping collocation method with both uniform stress and uniform displacement boundary conditions is utilized to calculate stress intensity correction factors for glass/epoxy and graphite/epoxy composites. Computed results are presented for selected combinations of crack length to width ratio L/W and plate aspect ratio H/W with various fiber orientations.

Determining Shear Modulus of 3-ply Laminated Veneer Lumber by Uniaxial Tension Test

  • Estimation equations of shear modulus in the plane of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) were compared each other through uniaxial tension test results. The equations - basic elastic equation in the dimensional orthotropic case, Hankinson's formula and empirical equation proposed by Salikis and Falk, were applied to determine the elastic constants at various angles to the grain, which were needed for determination of shear modulus. Tensile elastic modulus of LVL predicted from these equations were compared with test data to evaluate the accuracy of the equation. Tensile elastic modulus rapidly decreased at orientations between 0 and 15 degrees and elastic modulus at grain angles of 15, 30, and 45 degrees overestimated in the presented equations. But the proposed equation by Salikis and Falk showed better prediction, especially at 30, and 45 degrees. This proposed formula would be more useful and practical for estimating of shear modulus of wood composites like LVL to minimize the effect of Poisson's ratio term.

Deflection and stress behaviour of multi-walled carbon nanotube reinforced laminated composite beams

  • The paper presents the thermo-mechanically induced non-linear response of multiwall carbon nanotube reinforced laminated composite beam (MWCNTRCB) supported by elastic foundation using higher order shear deformation theory and von-Karman non-linear kinematics. The elastic properties of MWCNT reinforced composites are evaluated using Halpin-Tsai model by considering MWCNT reinforced polymer matrix as new matrix by dispersing in it and then reinforced with E-glass fiber in an orthotropic manner. The laminated beam is supported by Pasternak elastic foundation with Winkler cubic nonlinearity. A generalized static analysis is formulated using finite element method (FEM) through principle of minimum potential energy approach.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide the experimenters who use the oblique incidence ultrasonic method for anisotropic elastic constants measurement eith some useful relations. In particular, the equivalence of the times of flight by the energy ad phase velocities, which is key to the oblique incidence method, is proved explicitly. This equivalence greatly simplifies the analysis of immersion measurement results. In oredr to correctly measure the transit time of an immersed sample using the oblique incidence, the receiving transducer should be shifted laterally, and an expression in given for this shift. A method for determining all nine elastic constants of an orthotropic material is briefly described and the measurement results are listed for SiC particulate reinforced A1 matrix composites.

An Evaluation of Structural Integrity and Crashworthiness of Automatic Guideway Transit(AGT) Vehicle made of Sandwich Composites (샌드위치 복합재 적용 자동무인경전철 차체 구조물의 구조 안전성 및 충돌 특성 평가 연구)

  • This paper describes the results of structural integrity and crashworthiness of Automatic Guideway Transit(AGT) vehicle made of sandwich composites. The applied sandwich composite of vehicle structure was composed of aluminum honeycomb core and WR580/NF4000 glass fabric/epoxy laminate composite facesheet. Material testing was conducted to determine the input parameters for the composite facesheet model, and the effective equivalent damage model fer the orthotropic honeycomb core material. The finite element analysis using ANSYS v11.0 was dont to evaluate structural integrity of AGT vehicle according to JIS E 7105 and ASCE 21-98. Crashworthiness analysis was carried out using explicit finite element code LS-DYNA3D with the lapse of time. The crash condition was frontal accident with speed of 10km/h at rigid wall. The results showed that the structural integrity and crashworthiness of AGT vehicle were proven under the specified loading and crash conditions. Also, the modified Chang-Chang failure criterion was recommended to evaluate the failure modes of composite structures after crashworthiness event.

A Study on Crashworthiness and Rollover Characteristics of Low-Floor Bus made of Honeycomb Sandwich Composites (하니컴 샌드위치 복합재를 적용한 저상버스의 충돌 및 전복 특성 연구)

  • This paper presents the evaluation of crashworthiness and rollover characteristics of low-floor bus vehicles made of aluminum honeycomb sandwich composites with glass-fabric epoxy laminate facesheets. Crashworthiness and rollover analysis of low-floor bus was carried out using explicit finite element analysis code LS-DYNA3D with the lapse of time. Material testing was conducted to determine the input parameters for the composite laminate facesheet model, and the effective equivalent damage model for the orthotropic honeycomb core material. The crash conditions of low-floor bus were frontal accident with speed of 60km/h. Rollover analysis were conducted according to the safety rules of European standard (ECE-R66). The results showed that the survival space for driver and passengers was secured against frontal crashworthiness and rollover of low-floor bus. Also, The modified Chang-Chang failure criterion is recommended to predict the failure mode of composite structures for crashworthiness and rollover analysis.
