  • IKONOS image mapping is being considered a possible replacement to the traditional mapping in many countries due to their ease of access to current data and their potential high resolution. Survey Department of His Majesty's Government completed traditional orthophoto mapping of all urban and semi-urban areas of the country. The 1:5000 monochrome orthophoto maps of Kathmandu Valley were completed in 2003. In 2002, as a test, production of a near natural colour Image Map at 1:5000 scale of a part of Kathmandu Valley based on IKONOS data was carried out. A conventional line map plotting of the same area at 1:5000 was also prepared. The objective of the pilot project was to assess the geometric accuracy and the information content of these maps. The details of the study and their results are underlined. The findings of the study helps to explain whether IKONOS image map can replace conventional orthophoto map at 1:5,000 for urban areas of Nepal like Kathmandu.

  • The orthophto map is seen as the form of picture with the uniform reduced scale as the current terrain map. Thus it provides a reasonable feeling of scene and is easy to be interpreted. Furthermore, digital orthophoto is currently used as the basic terrain information data of the Geo-Spatial Information System(GSIS). Therefore, the orhtophoto map has high potential use as a future terrain map. This paper studies the method of producing orthophoto map by using the digital satellite imagery data taken from SPOT satellite of France. The production of orthophoto map requires the process of generating orthophoto imagery with digital elevation model, which process is called digital differential rectification. As the final accuracy of orthophoto map depends on that of digital elevation model, the precise and efficient production method of digital elevation model should be preceded. This study investigated the method of producing digital elevation model directly from SPOT satellite imagery and generated ortho-image by resampling the original SPOT imagery through digital differential rectification. Finally, Simple orthophoto map was made by overlaying the ortho-image and the contour map from digital elevation model.

  • A traditional method to produce three dimensional orthophoto map has been studied by digital photogrammetry which decides a height by digitally searching conjugate points on the stereo image. Many researches in digital photogrammetric field are still in progress to determine conjugate points automatically. In this study, we analyze the effect of accuracy of area-based image matching with changing eight types of target area size using four types of image pyramid. The result of image matching to each method compared with 1/5,000 digital mapping data. We decided a optimal size of target area on a percentage of image matching. Digital elevation model is generated by matching results and bundle method. As a result, three dimensional orthophoto map is made in terms of digital elevation model and orthophoto.

  • In this study, we generated DSM(Digital Surface Model)s and orthophotos with both LIDAR data and scanned aerial photos and compared them with those generated from only the scanned photos. We checked the relief displacements of buildings appearing in the generated orthophotos, where the displacement should not be exist in a true-orthophoto. The RMSE of the relief displacement in the orthophoto generated using a LIDAR DSM is 3 m while the RMSE in the orthophotos from a DSM based on the image matching is 6.1 m. It was revealed that the orthophoto from a LIDAR DSM are closer to a true-orthophoto. But the results in the accuracy test and similarity evaluation of the generated orthophotos were contrary to former results because the roof texture of buildings were expanded to occlusion areas around the buildings. With the central area of the photo, we can generate sufficiently accurate true-orthophotos using a LIDAR DSM.

  • Digital map, DEM and orthophoto were produced by using PC based digital photogrammetric system and aerial photo images that were obtained with scale of 1/5,000 and scanning density of 1200dpi and 600dpi, and the accuracies of these outputs were evaluated by various methods. Non-skilled operator produced digital map with PC based digital photogrammetric system and aerial photo images scanned by 1200dpi. The results showed that it was impossible to insert contour lines, but the rest elements could be drawn with the accuracy of 1/1,000. In automatic generation of DEM, scanning density of aerial photo and grid interval of DEM didn't affect the accuracy of DEM. In production of orthophoto, we could know that the larger grid interval of DEM, the lower accuracy of orthophoto, but scanning density of original image had more effect on quality of orthophoto. By the way, accuracy comparison between orthophoto and digital map with same check points showed that orthophoto was more accurate than digital map, and orthophoto could be used in more diverse areas. Hereafter in civilian part, aerial photo image and PC based digital photogrammetric system could make practical application of data correction and update in GIS.

  • The number of traffic accidents caused by wet or icy road surface conditions is on the rise every year. Car crashes in such bad road conditions can increase fatalities and serious injuries. Historical data (from the year 2016 to the year 2020) on weather-related traffic accidents show that the fatality rates are fairly high in Korea. This requires accurate prediction and identification of hazardous road conditions. In this study, a forecasting model is developed to predict the chances of traffic accidents that can occur on roads affected by weather and road surface conditions. Multiple deep learning algorithms taking into account AlexNet and 2D-CNN are employed. Data on orthophoto images, automatic weather systems, automated synoptic observing systems, and road surfaces are used for training and testing purposes. The orthophotos images are pre-processed before using them as input data for the modeling process. The procedure involves image segmentation techniques as well as the Z-Curve index. Results indicate that there is an acceptable performance of prediction such as 65% for dry, 46% for moist, and 33% for wet road conditions. The overall accuracy of the model is 53%. The findings of the study may contribute to developing comprehensive measures for enhancing road safety.

  • In this study, we generated an orthophoto with both LIDAR data and aerial images and compared it with that generated from only the images. For the accuracy assessment of these orthophotos, we performed not only qualitative analysis based on visual inspection but also quantitative analysis by measuring horizontal inconsistency, boundary coordinates and similarity measures on buildings. Based on the visual inspection and horizontal inconsistency, the orthophoto based on LIDAR DSM appeared to be more closer to a true-orthophoto. However, the analysis on measurements of boundary coordinates and similarity measures indicates that the orthophoto based on LIDAR DSM is more vulnerable to double mapping on occluded areas. Accordingly, if we apply an effective solution on double mapping or use only the central areas of the aerial images where occluded areas are rarely founded, we can generate automatically true-orthophotos based on a LIDAR DSM.

  • This study deals with the optimal method of orthophoto products using the non-photogrammetric scanners. we scanned positive film of aerial photographs at the different resolution and producted the orthophoto using the automatically generated DEM based on the Digital Photogrammetric Workstation, considering aerial image resolutions, DEM interval, resampling method and outpixel size. As a results, the acquired accuracy was worse in horizontal, but good in vertical. So It will be expected that orthophoto using non-photo grammetric scanner is good enough for the acquisition of GIS data and the calculation of soil volumes.

  • Even though existing methods for orthophoto production in traditional photogrammetry are effective in large areas, they are inefficient when dealing with change detection of geometric features and image production for short time periods in small areas. In recent years, the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), equipped with various sensors, is rapidly developing and has been implemented in various ways throughout the geospatial information field. The data and imagery of specific areas can be quickly acquired by UAVs at low costs and with frequent updates. Furthermore, the redundancy of geospatial information data can be minimized in the UAV-based orthophoto generation. In this paper, the orthophoto and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) are generated using a standard low-end UAV in small sloped areas which have a rather low accuracy compared to flat areas. The RMSE of the check points is σH = ±0.12 m on a horizontal plane and σV = ±0.09 m on a vertical plane. As a result, the maximum and mean RMSE are in accordance with the working rule agreement for the airborne laser scanning surveying of the NGII (National Geographic Information Institute) on a 1/500 scale digital map. Through this study, we verify the possibilities of the orthophoto generation in small slope areas using general-purpose low specification UAV rather than a high cost surveying UAV.

  • Recently, production and application of ortho image using high resolution image are increasing by acquired high quality data from development of photogrammetry and IT technology. Generally, An ortho image has some problems that cannot remove completely to relief displacement about cultural feature like building and overpass because of performance rectification using DEM. Therefore, in this study, I generated DSM each of four experiment cases for production of true ortho image which is removed relief displacement of building using digital photogrammetry technique and LiDAR data, presented the plan of DSM production that is appropriate to production true ortho image by analyzing an accuracy after manufacture an ortho image each of DSM.
