  • This study aims to investigate how librarians' loyalty is affected by the organizational structure of libraries. For this purpose, 39 university libraries and 21 public libraries in Seoul were surveyed, and 126 questionnaires were collected and statistically analyzed. The main findings of the analysis are as follows. First, the centralization factor of organizational structure significantly affects the belongingness, responsibility, and devotion factors of loyalty. Second, the communication factor of organizational structure significantly affects the belongingness factor of loyalty, and it has a more substantial effect than centralization. Third, the moderating effect of library type on the effect of organizational structure on librarians' loyalty was found to be statistically insignificant. Based on the above results, this study suggests organizational structural measures to increase librarians' loyalty, and it is meaningful in that it is a study on an organizational field that has not been covered in depth in the literature.

  • While the value of information technology has long been a hot issue, few solid results have been found as of yet. It is partly due to methodological factors and model underspecifcation. This study empirically develops a ITS(information technology structure) taxonomy and investigates the relationships between ITS taxonomy and business performance in the Korean firms. Among factors that impact business performance, organization structure and control system are selected and they are hypothesized to moderate-the relationships between ITS taxonomy and business performance. By surveying 91 manufacturing firms and applying hierarchical cluster analysis, four ITS are identified : centralized, decentralized, centralized cooperative, decentralized cooperative. ANOVA, correlation analysis and crosstable analysis say the presence of moderating effect of organization structure and control system. Cooperative ITS is best in business performance. Centralized ITS is related to functional organizational form. Decentralized ITS is related to product organizational form with decentralized decision making, Centralized cooperative ITS is related to matrix organizational form. Decentralized cooperative ITS is related to matrix organizational form with high integration. These findings have implications for the opportunities and challenges to match information technology with organization structure and control system.

With these findings, it is confirmed that innovation supporting organizational culture and decentralized structure influence positively affective commitment to change and innovative behavior through acceptance of organizational change. • Despite surging interests in analyzing business processes, there are few scientific approaches to analysis and redesign of organizational structures which can greatly affect the performance of business processes. This paper presents a method for deriving and analyzing organizational relations from process models using social network analysis techniques. Process models contain information on who performs which processes and activities, along with the assignment of organizational units such as departments and roles to related activities. To derive social relations between organizational units from process models, three types of metrics are formally defined: transfer of work metrics, subcontracting metrics, and cooperation metrics. By applying these metrics, various relations among organizational units can be derived and analyzed. To verify the proposed method and metrics, they are applied to standard process models of the semiconductor and electronic, and automotive industry in Korea. This paper presents a taxonomy for diagnosing organization structure based on the presented approach. The paper also discusses how to combine analyses in the taxonomy for redesign of organizational structures.

  • Past research linking information technology and organizational structure has been inconclusive and contradictory. The purpose of this study is to resolve some of this confusion by taking into consideration one theoretical issue and three methodological problems. The one theoretical issue is an assessment of the importance of environment as a key external variable constraining both organizational structure and the use of information technology. To date, there has been no systematic, empirical research on the conceptual linkage among all three of these variables. The three methodological issues concern measurement problems associated with (1) controlling for different levels of analysis, (2) establishing a clear operationalization of information technology, and (3) differentiating institutional and questionnaire approaches to data collection. The research results in four conclusions. First, data confirm the environment as a key external variable in the linkage between information technology and organizational structure. Second, three central dimensions of information technology are identified: Growth of Capacity, extensiveness of information technology use, and information technology sophistication. Third, in order to maximize the explanatory power of information technology on other organizational constructs, it is necessary to differentiate between the actual use of information technology as opposed to the mere presence of information technology. Fourth, carefully designed questionnaire measures reveal no significant differences from institutional measures in the assessment of key organizational constructs.
