  • In response to the recent rapid technological and market changes, the importance of the design of ambidextrous organization has been increasingly emphasized as one of the dynamic capabilities. Firms that show a high performance in the rapid technological and market changes appear to design and implement ambidextrous organization successfully. They have achieved both exploitative competence for continuous innovation with product development and exploratory competence for discontinuous innovation with new market and new technologies. We have examined why and how to design and operate ambidextrous organizations and the effects of ambidextrous organizational characteristics on the performance from structural, contextual and leadership perspectives. We conducted case studies on 3 Korean firms that showed different characteristics of industrial product, company size, etc. Longitudinal case studies exhibit different processes of design and operating ambidextrous organization according to innovative strategy and industrial characteristics.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the major trends in research studies in the Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Administration from 2010 to 2012. Methods: A review using analysis criteria developed by researchers was done of 132 studies published between 2010 and 2012. Research design, participants, research domain, and keywords were analyzed from the Journal of Korean Nursing Administration. Results: Job satisfaction, stress, organizational commitment, safety, turnover, nursing education, and performance were found to be major keywords. Of the research in the Journal, quantitative methods were used in 93.2% of studies. The major setting and participants were hospitals (58.2%) and nurses (65.5%) respectively. Prevalent analysis methods used were t-test, ANOVA, correlation, regression, chi-square, AMOS, and factor analysis. Major domains in the articles were: controlling, directing, staffing, nursing management education, and professionalism & legal principles. Conclusion: Through this study, the research trends in nursing administration were identified, but there is a need to include more of the following topics in future research: new concepts in nursing policy, enhanced deliberations of IRB, rationalization of the effects in sample size calculations, theoretical development of planning and organizing, and development of interventions for management support of the nursing management process.

  • Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA) model is a linear programing based technique for measuring the relative performance of organizational units where the presence of multiple inputs and outputs makes comparison difficult. DEA model allows each unit to adopt a set of weight that shows it in the most favorable light in comparison to the other units. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of the libraries of national university in terms of relative efficiency, measured by the method of DEA. Twenty six libraries of national universities in Korea were used to analyze. The number of employees, size of library, budget, and number of books were used for input data, and the number of visitors, number of loan books, and number of books for lending and borrowing were used for output data. We found out that number of libraries with 100% relative efficiency among 26 libraries from 2005 to 2007 were only 9, 9 and 10, respectively. Moreover most of the libraries need to increase outputs and decrease inputs in order to improve efficiency.

  • This study focuses on the internalization process of service sector, especially on the foreign market entry modes of Korean healthcare industry. The paper examined the effects of country and firm specific factors, and strategic elements of the industry on the selection of foreign market entry modes by using multiple regression analysis. The findings indicate that firms' global experience and documented strategic assets have significant effects on the high control organizational types in the selection of entry mode while the other determinants including size of the firm were found to be less significance. This study provides the academic implications to the subject of the internationalization of Asian service industry and the practical reference to this highly specialized soft service sector.

  • The basic identity of the National Library of Korea(Sejong), opened in December 2013, is the specialized library focused on policy information service. Nevertheless, the library is not unfaithful to its identity. So researchers surveyed and analyzed the perception of the basic identity and role, utilization and satisfaction degress of various services, need and use for policy information and policy information service, and strategic and focused initiatives from stakeholders such as public officials, government-supported researchers, citizens living in Sejong city, and employees who work in the NLK(S). As a result, researchers suggested various strategies to expand the organizational size, to strengthen acquisition of domestic and foreign policy information, and to enhance national policy information service for related groups' satisfaction and dependence of policy information service for the NLK(S).

  • There is a recognition that traditional resource sharing methods such as interlibrary lending and document delivery are now inadequate to meet user needs in the increasingly networked environment. The current study identifies barriers to resource sharing and provides analysis of stakeholders engaged in resource sharing. Focused interviews with six professional librarians were also carried out to seek out deeper understanding of perceptions of barriers among librarians. Results show that the size of the library was not necessarily result in active resource sharing. There was a wide gap among librarians in terms of their attitudinal and organizational orientations towards resource sharing. Barriers specifically identified in the study include the narrowly defined notion among librarians of what constitutes research and the untested fear of swamping where there is an imbalance of collections. Overall, while resource sharing is recognized as an integral part of library services, it seriously lacks funding and staff. The study recommends earnest efforts to build librarians' community to invigorate resource sharing among libraries.

  • Family instability has a negative effect on not only an individual household but also the society. The government continues to operate family support centers as a countermeasure to family instability issues. A healthy and multicultural family support center is considered an effective support system that extends from a family unit to the local community. In this study, the satisfaction and demand levels of each center, located in Seoul and Incheon, were examined with respect to items such as operation contents, physical space, and organizational structure. The results showed that various efforts for creating a family-friendly community were implemented in healthy family support centers and multicultural family support centers. It was found that the center organizers and operators focused more on software and programs than on the physical environment. There was mostly a shortage of physical and environmental space. This space shortage limited the planned and ongoing activities in terms of the residents' self-directed participation and space formation for a family-friendly educational culture. Therefore, it was necessary to set up the space-related criteria for each center in order to solve this environmental issue. We identified the baseline data of the criteria for a center's physical and spatial design and size. In particular, it was suggested that a more strategic physical and spatial design is needed to achieve an integral and effective operation for the connection of the family with the local society.

  • Firm's competitive advantage and profitability can be gained over competitors by human resources and human resource management that are characterized by idiosyncrasies or differentiation. Yet, the results of previous studies have been a emerging consensus that the isomorphism and homogeneity of HRM and HR practices among firms regardless of thoese industrial areas, size, organizational settings, etc. are universal. Based on the previous studies of similarities of HRM, the paper theoretically investigates the background and reasons of introducing similar HR practices among firms. The paper shows the dynamism of HR system in Korean firms, adapting a new HR system. Three types of reasons are found, coercive isomorphism, mimetic isomorphism, and normative isomorphism. However, it is also discussed that there is an important gap in the theoretical and empirical research. More empirical research is suggested in order for gaining meaningful results on HR studies.

  • As increasing IT investments in corporate decision makers' locus move from application level to organizational level. However, many companies still don't have a structured IT decision makings architecture. According to existing IT governance research, although companies are included in similar environment, size, and industry they have a variety of IT governance modes because of not single contingency factor but multiple contingencies factors. The goal of this study is to suggest key IT activities and contingency factors which affect IT decision makings architecture based on existing IT governance studies, to develop an IT governance research model with multiple contingencies theory, and to articulate IT governance architectures of small or medium sized companies in Korea. Through extracting a desirable IT governance framework, our research is going to help to increase companies' value.
