Under the coordination of GKSS a new European project in the field of membrane development started recently. This project focuses on the development of novel nanostructured materials for selective material transport and separation. Two classes of materials will be developed in this project: nanostructured organic/inorganic hybrid materials and functional self-organized supramolecular copolymers.(omitted)

A variable surface coating with the potential to fulfill the requirements of industry will be presented. Via controlled radical polymerization methods from a functionalized Polymethylsilsesquioxane delivers an inorganic-organic block copolymer, which can be easily modified and tuned for different applications. Spin coated or dip coated on various substrates show promising results. By using different block copolymers the contact angle on a silicon wafer can be varied in a range of $90^{\circ}\;up\;to\;145^{\circ}$ After curing and complete condensation a perfect adhesion on glasses, plastics and metals is achieved.
In this paper, the organic material Poly(methyl methacrylate) PMMA is used with inorganic $Al_2O_3$ to fabricate organic-inorganic multilayer barrier thin films. The organic thin films are developed using a roll-to-roll electrohydrodynamic atomization system, whereas the inorganic are grown using a roll-to-roll low-temperature atmospheric pressure atomic layer deposition system. For the first time, these two technologies are used together to develop organic-inorganic multilayer barrier thin films in atmospheric condition. The films are grown under optimized parameters and classified into three classes based on the layer structures, when the total thickness of the barrier is maintained at ~ 160 nm. All classes of barriers show good morphological, optical and chemical properties. The $Al_2O_3$ films with a low average arithmetic roughness of 1.58 nm conceal the non-uniformity and irregularities in PMMA thin films with a roughness of 5.20 nm. All classes of barriers show a notably good optical transmission of ~ 85 %. The hybrid organic-inorganic barriers show water vapor and oxygen permeation in the range of ${\sim}3.2{\times}10^{-2}g/m^2/day$ and $0.015cc/m^2/day$ at $23^{\circ}C$ and 100% relative humidity. It has been confirmed that it can be mass-produced and used as a low-cost barrier thin film in various printing electronic devices.
Encapsulation of organic based devices is essential issue due to easy deterioration of organic material by water vapor. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a promising solution because of its low temperature deposition and quality of the deposited film. Moisture permeation has a mechanism to pass through defects, Thin Film Encapsulation using inorganic / organic / inorganic hybrid film has been used as promising technology. $Al_2O_3$ / Polymer / $Al_2O_3$ multilayer film has shown excellent environmental protection characteristics despite of thin thicknesses of the films.
This study presents the technology and application of hybrid insulation film for electric magnet wire. In order to make the high efficient motor with high space factor, it is necessary to develop a self-lubrication heat-resistant insulation film that can be used when the space factor 70% or more. A key to achieving high windability is to increase the lubricity and bonding strength of vanish, which for a magnet wire generally determines the mechanical scratches characteristics. Effective ways to reduce scratches include improving insulation film prepared by organic and inorganic hybrid synthesis methods.
The (0.8PPV+0.2DMPPV) copolymer and silica/borosilicate composites were synthesized by sol-gel process. The organic-inorganic hybrid solution was prepared by using of (0.8PPV+0.2DMPPV) copolymer precursor solution as a raw material for organic components and TEOS and TMB for glass components. Then by drying the solution in vacuum at 5$0^{\circ}C$ for 7days and subsequent heat treatment in vacuum at 15$0^{\circ}C$~30$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h~72h with heating rate of 0.2$^{\circ}C$/min and 1.8$^{\circ}C$/min, the organic-inorganic composites were synthesized. Microstructural evolution of the composites was characterized by DSC, IR spectrocopy, UV/VIS spectroscopy, and TEM. Elimination of the polymer precursor and degradation of the polymer were observed by DSC and Si-O and trans C=C absorption peaks were identified by IR spectra. The polymer was found to be successfully incorporated into the glass matrix and it was confirmed by the absorption peaks from the polymer in the UV/VIS spectra and the TEM results. The absorption peak of the composites was found to shift toward short wavelength side compared to that of the pure polymer and the amount of the blue shift increased with increasing the heat treatment temperature and heat treatment time and with decreasing the heating rate.
