TPolystyrene thin films are prepared by glow discharge of sytrene monomer vapor th establish the growth mechanism of organic thin films by the plasma polymerization. As the discharge parameters, discharge current(5mA-20mA), frequency (10kHz-50kHz, 13.56MHz), gaspressure (0.2torr-1.5torr), and discharge time(2min-12min)are adopted. Plasma-polymerized filmsof styrene vapor are identified as polystyrene by IR spectra. The thickness of plasma-polymerized films increases with gas pressure, frequency and discharge current in the region of the low frequency and below the allowed gas pressure where the polymerization occurs. It is suggested that the growth mechanism can be explained by ionic reaction in d.c. and low frequency region, and by radical reaction in high frequency region.
The bonding structure of organic materials such as fluorinated amorphous carbon films was classified into two types due to the chemical shifts. The electrical properties of fluorinated amorphous carbon films also showed very different effect of two types notwithstanding a very little difference. Fluorinated amorphous carbon films with the cross-link breakage structure existed large leakage current resulting from effect of the electron tunneling. Increasing the cation due to the electron-deficient group increased the barrier height of the films with the cross-link amorphous structure, therefore the electric characteristic of the final materials with low dielectric constant was also improved. The lowest dielectric constant is 2.3 at the sample with the cross-link amorphous structure.
Ethylene-bridged silsesquioxane resins were synthesized from two monomers: 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane and methyltrimethoxysilane. The silsesquioxane thin films were spin-coated from the copolymerized resins on silicon wafer. Metal insulator metal (MIM), metal insulator semiconductor (MIS) devices were utilized to investigate the electrical properties of the copolymerized thin films. As the films were inserted as gate insulator in the OTFT devices, the field effect mobilitites were evaluated by employing Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as organic semiconductor, which shows that their dielectric properties and mobility values are dependent on the molecular structures and Si-OH concentration involving in the films.
We report investigations on a Pentacene thin film as a component for active layer of Organic thin film transistors. Pentacene film was deposited by Organic Molecular Beam Deposition(OMBD) and Al electrode was deposoted by vacuum evaporation. Electrical characterization of Pentacene films were measured by the three-terminal contact resistance methods, as the results contact resistance between pentacene films and the Aluminium electrode is 5.064G$\Omega$. The Al contact with the pentacene shows the bottom contact resistance. From the current-voltage characteristics, electrical conductivity of the Pentacene film is found as ~ 10$^{-4}$ /cm. physical characterization of pentacene films were measured by UV-spectrum and Cyclic-Voltammetry method.
A highly flexible polyimide (PI) was synthesized successfully from ethylene glycol bis(anhydrotrimellitate) (TMEG) and 1,3-bis(4-aminophenoxy)benzene (TPER) for its application in electronics. To enhance the thermal stability and mechanical properties of this novel PI, we prepared PI nanocomposite films using nanoparticles of clays that had been treated with organic intercalating agents (organoclays). We used two types of organoclays: montmo-rillonite (MMT) treated with hexadecylamine (C$\_$16/) and MMT treated with dimethyl dihydrogenated tallow quaternary ammonium (l5A). PI/organoclay hybrid films were obtained by first preparing poly(amic acid) (PAA)/organoclay films and then converting the PAA to polyimide by thermal conversion. PAA was characterized by FT-IR and $^1$H-NMR spectroscopy and the conversion of PAA to PI was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. We analyzed the dispersion of the organoclays in the PI film by X-ray diffraction. The thermal stability and mechanical properties of the hybrid films were also investigated.
Indium oxide conducting films were dep9sited on Si(100) substrates at various temperatures by liquid delivery metal organic chemical vapor deposition using Indium (III) tris (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3.5-heptanedionato) $(dpm)_3$ precursors. The films deposited at $200{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ were grown with a (111) preferred orientation and exhibit an increase of grain size from 21 to 33nm with increasing deposition temperature. In the range of deposition temperature, there is no metallic indium phase in deposited films.
Recently, organic thin films are widely used to the application of organic optoelectronic devices such as OLED, OTFT, organic solar cell, and organic laser, etc. The electrical transport of organic thin film is very important to determine the performance and thus should be analyzed for analysis of operation and design of devices. However, there have been rarely known about the electrical transport of organic thin films. As an example pentacene is known to be a good organic semiconductor to produce the best performance in OTFT at the present. But the performance is varied depending on the position of source/drain contacts and gate surface states and the thickness of thin film. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effects of the above-mentioned factors on the electrical properties of pentacene thin film.
We fabricated an organic-inorganic nano laminated encapsulation layer using molecular layer deposition (MLD) combined with atomic layer deposition (ALD). The $Al_2O_3$ inorganic layers as an effective single encapsulation layer were deposited at 80 degree C using ALD with alternating surface-saturation reactions of TMA and $H_2O$. A self-assembled organic layers (SAOLs) were fabricated at the same temperature using MLD. MLD and ALD deposition process were performed in the same reaction chamber. The prepared SAOL-$Al_2O_3$ organic-inorganic nano laminate films exhibited good mechanical stability and excellent encapsulation property. The measurement of water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) was performed with Ca test. We controlled thickness-ratio of organic and inorganic layer, and specific ratio showed a lowest WVTR value. Also this encapsulation layer contained very few pin-holes or defects which were linked in whole area by defect test. To apply into real OLEDs panels, we controlled a film stress from tensile to compressive and flexibility defined as an elastic modulus with organic-inorganic ratio. It has shown that OLEDs panel encapsulated with nano laminate layer exhibits better properties than single layer encapsulated in acceleration conditions. These results indicate that the organic-inorganic nano laminate thin films have high potential for flexible display applications.

A dipolar interlayer can cause dramatic changes in the device characteristics of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) or photovoltaics. A shift in the threshold voltage, for example, has been observed in an OFET where the organic semiconductor active layer is deposited on SiO2 modified with a dipolar monolayer. Dipolar molecules can similarly be used to change the current-voltage characteristics of organic-inorganic heterojunctions. We have conducted a series of experiments in which different molecular linkages are placed between a pentacene thin film and a silicon substrate. Interface modifications with different linkages allow us to predict and examine the nature of tunneling through pentacene on modified Si surfaces with different dipole moment. The molecular-scale structure and the tunneling properties of pentacene thin films on modified Si (001) with nitrobenzene and styrene were examined using scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Electronic interfaces using organic surface dipoles can be used to control the band lineups of a semiconductor at organic/inorganic interfaces. Our results can provide insights into the charge transport characteristics of organic thin films at electronic interfaces.
The use of preformed copolymers and their cross-linking have been attempted in order to improve the intrinsic fragility of monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and to make their technological applications. It has shown that an imidization followed a polyion-complexation can stabilize the LB films against heat and solvents. And, when the polymer structure was properly designed, concurrent removal of the alkyl tails together with imide formation could be accomplished. In this paper, the monolayers of the polymers which were polyion-complexed with PAA at the air-water interface can be transferred onto solid substrates such as porous fluorocarbon membranes filter and quartz crystal microbalance. The properties of the monolayers and the LB films will be discussed by .pi.-A isotherms, FT-IR, DSC, deposition ratio, QCM, and SEM. In addition, it was attempted to investigate the response characteristics of polymer LB films to the organic gases by the use of QCM.
