  • This study aimed to examine whether needs for scaling are associated with health behaviors in a representative sample of middle-aged Korean people. We examined 5120 individuals aged 40 to 64 years who participated in the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed with adjustments for demographic variables and health status. This analysis revealed significant associations between needs for scaling and the following: current smoking, no visits to dental clinics, current drinking, non-oral checkups, and non-use of oral care products. As a result of a subgroup analysis, significant factors differed according to gender. As a result of this study, needs for scaling were associated with identified health behaviors and findings about health behaviors that are effective for maintaining and promoting periodontal health in middle-aged people were confirmed.

There were examined the source and the design of study, type of subjects, measurement variables, the intervention outcome of experimental research, and theme of qualitative research. The results were as follows : 1. 121 of 149 studies were composed of master thesis and dissertation of graduate school. There were 55 correlations, 30 descriptions, 19 comparisons, 19 qualitative studies and 2 Q-methods as the type of research design. 2. Cancer patients without describing specified diagnosis as subjects' characteristic were 44 of total studies. The others had various diagnoses such as gastric cancer, uterine cancer, breast cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, colorectal cancer, and lung cancer. According to treatment type, patients receiving chemotherapy were the highest number distribution as 53 of all researches. 3. Most measurement instruments used for research were translated it into Korean that developed by foreigners, such as Zung's depression, Spielberg's anxiety, and Wallston's locus of control. 4. Quality of life was shown the most frequently among correlational researches. the next one was depression, the third was hope, and so on. 5. There was the most frequent comparison between cancer and non-cancer patients in comparative researches. It was surveyed those variables as diet habits, risk factors, stressful life events, anxiety and depression, and self-care capacity between two groups. 6. The subjects were mostly chemotherapy patients as 15 of 24 experimental studies. Oral care and education were respectively the highest experimental interventions. 7. Qualitative researches about cancer were reported since 1991. Their themes were illness experience, adaptation process, dying experience, family experience, hope, caring, experience of health behavior, meaning of chemotherapy and experience of cancer survivor. Phenomenologic methodology was designed above 50% of qualitative researches. According to the above findings, cancer research had increased since 1990 and done mostly by descriptive design but a few experimental studies. As recommendations for the future, It is necessary to study the comparison of oncology nursing research internationally, the replication to establish the effect of nursing intervention, and the family care of cancer patient.

  • The resistance to dentistry is as old as the history of dentistry. Historically, dental treatment techniques have continued to evolve to minimize pain with effective treatment, but the negative perception of dentistry has not been reduced as much as the development of technology. Particularly, children have a lack of resistance to external stimuli, mental development and patience, and the degree of cooperation with dental care is reduced due to changes in parenting methods including parental influence, so can experience DFA(dental fear and anxiety) and DBMP(dental behavior management problem). Among the various stimuli experienced by the child in the dentist, psychological factors affecting the dentist, dental clinic, and social factors affect the formation of the relationship with the dentist. Especially in recent years, the addiction related to smartphone is emerging as a social problem, and the effects of smartphone addiction on the oral cavity and the effects on dental behavior are examined.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health knowledge and oral health practice of teachers in early childhood education institutions. The subjects in this study were 169 teachers who worked in early childhood education institutions. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed with a SPSSWIN 14.0 program. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. Concerning oral health knowledge, they got a mean of 7.97(9), 2.66(3), 2.86(5), 2.42(5) and 1.04(2) respectively in knowledge on dental caries, toothbrushing, periodontitis, fluoride and diet. Overall, they got a mean of 16.98 in 24 items, and the score corresponded to approximately 70 out of 100 points. 2. As for oral health practice, tongue cleaning(4.22) was what they did the most to take care of their oral health, and they just got 2.60 in regular dental checkup. Overall, they got about 3.11 in oral health practice. 3. Regarding relationship between general characteristics and oral health knowledge, the teachers who were in their 30s got 17.47 in overall oral health knowledge, and those with a career of five to less than 10 years got 17.50. The teachers who received college or higher education got 17.27, and the principals got 18.26. Those who had ever received education on oral health got 17.01. But the gaps between them and the others were not statistically significant. 4. As to connections between general characteristics including age and oral health practice, restricted sugar intake, regular dental checkup, the use of oral hygiene supplies, tongue cleaning and overall oral health practice were more prevailing among the older teachers, and the gaps between them and the younger teachers were statistically significant. 5. In terms of relationship between oral health knowledge and oral health practice, there was no statistically significant relationship between the two on the whole, but better oral health knowledge led to better oral health practice in each part. This study shows that various oral health education programs for the kindergarten teachers should be developed and continuous education through the programs is important to improve the knowledge of oral health and to change oral health behavior.

  • This study examined the relationship between the sociodemographic characteristics, health related factors, physical functions (ADL, IADL), mental functions (CES-D, MMSE-K), oral health impact profile (OHIP-14), and the quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) for the elderly in long-term care facilities. The research was conducted in 602 facility allowance beneficiaries authorized to be eligible for long-term care in long-term care facilities through personal interviews using a structured questionnaire from May 1 to June 30, 2016. As a result, the quality of life was lower among females than males in the group receiving government subsidies than the group whose livelihood was maintained by themselves or their children, in the group with a longer period of care, in the drinking group than the non-drinking group, in the group with irregular exercise than the regular exercise, in the group with irregular meals than regular meals, in the group with poor subjective health conditions than good subjective health condition, in the group with a smaller number of daily toothbrushing, in the group with xerostomia than no xerostomia, in the group with a lower OHIP-14, in the group with a lower ADL and IADL, and in the group with a lower CES-D and MMSE-K. In particular, the quality of life was affected more by health-related factors and CES-D and MMSE-K than by other factors. Therefore, it is necessary to make efforts to prevent depression and cognitive impairment, including health-related behavior, with the objective of improving the quality of life for the elderly in long-term care facilities.

  • This study aims to analyze realities of oral health and related factors, and establish Structural Equation Modeling. The subjects of study were 9,340 elderly over age 65 who took the health examination(the first) for the local insured which National Health Insurance Corporation carried out in the survey area mentioned below from January 2002 to December 2002. The areas surveyed were 4 big cities including Seongbuk-ku, Seoul, 5 medium cities including Wonjusi, Gangwon-do, and 5 Counties including Yeong deok County, Kyeongbuk. Considering location and the scale of population, firstly, big unit areas(metropolitan city, province) were selected according to convenience, secondly, low unit areas(city, county, district) were selected randomly. The subjects were the elderly who took all tests including an oral examination and filled in the questionnaire. Major results from analysis are as follows: 1. Review of Composition Conception Validity As a result of analyzing composition conception validity of SEM including posture test, urine test, blood test, habits of eating, drinking and smoking, oral symptoms, and oral health status, using fit index such as GFI, CFI, TLI, and RMSEA, all were within fit range and composition conception validity was recognized. 2. As a result of analyzing SEM to find the relationship between each factor and oral health status, it was confirmed that all factors except urine test affected oral health status and the synthetic SEM to explain it could be established. In result, we could verify that the elderly of rural areas who had lesser experience of visiting a clinic and oral prophylaxis had a higher rate of caries, missing teeth, and denture need, and drinking and smoking negatively affected the rate of caries, periodontal, and missing teeth. Also, periodontal diseases were observed from 43.2% of the total elderly and much from the lower age. Most of oral disease can be prevented by right oral health behavior. Therefore through oral health professionals from each district public health center of the nation, oral health education for the elderly about right eating habits and oral health care should be carried out systematically and policy change to increase access to dental service is required lest that visiting a dental clinic should be impossible or oral health behaviors such as oral prophylaxis and denture wearing should be neglected by economic, geographical barriers. Also, to establish SEM to explain the relationship between oral health status and systemic health, more accurate test methods and effective index development should be preceded. Because items developed by National Health Insurance Corporation applied to this study without alteration, structuring a model had the uppermost limit. Continual study seems to be needed.

  • Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) is the most common psychiatric disorder in school-age children which is increasing gradually. It is hard for ADHD children to focus on particular stimulus for a long time. ADHD children are characterized by hyperactivity which shows in behaviors like, talking too much, getting up from their seats without permission, running around, keep on moving their arms and legs. ADHD children have problems with impulse controlling that they tend to fall and get into an accident very often. Thus dentist's attention and care must increase when dental treatment is performed with ADHD children since behavior control, oral hygiene problems, and trauma might be expected. By using sedative drugs and psychological behavior control, chief complaint was resolved in a 8-years-old female diagnosed for ADHD.
