Optimum Thickness Distributions of Plate Structure with Different Essential Boundary Conditions in the Fundamental Frequency Maximization Problem (기본고유진동수 최대화 문제에 있어서 경계조건에 따른 판구조물의 최적두께 분포)

  • This paper investigate the optimum thickness distribution of plate structure with different essential boundary conditions in the fundamental natural frequency maximization problem. In this study, the fundamental natural frequency is considered as the objective function to be maximized and the initial volume of structures is used as the constraint function. The computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) such as Coon's patch representation is used to represent the thickness distribution of plates. A reliable degenerated shell finite element is adopted calculate the accurate fundamental natural frequency of the plates. Robust optimization algorithms implemented in the optimizer DoT are adopted to search optimum thickness values during the optimization iteration.   • For minimizing wall thickness thinning of circular shells, a new stamping technology, the deep draw-ing process combined with ironing is approached and investigated. The design requirements for the deep drawing shells are to keep the optimum wall thickness with max. 10 percent thickness thinning of the initial blank thickness, to make uniform thickness strain distribution for the wall of circular shell and to improve the shape accuracy for the roundness and concentricity. In order to check the validity and effectiveness of proposed work, a sample process design is applied to a circular shell needed for a 4multi-stepped deep drawing. Through experiments, the variations of the thickness strain distribution in each drawing process are observed. Also a series of experiments are performed to investigate optimum process variables such as the geometry of tooling, radius and drawing rate. In particular, the advantage of current approach with ironing is shown in contrast to the conventional deep drawing process. From the results of proposed method, the optimum value of process variables are obtained, which contribute more uniform thickness strain distribution and better quality in the drawn product.

  • This paper provides the results of the investigation on the optimum thickness distribution of plate structures with different essential boundary conditions. In this study, the strain energy to be minimized is considered as the objective function and the initial volume of structures is used as the constraint function. The computer-aided geometric design (CAGD) such as Coon's patch representation is used to represent the thickness distribution of plates. A reliable degenerated shell finite element is adopted to calculate the accurate strain energy level of the plates. Robust optimization algorithms provided in the optimizer DOT are adopted to search the optimum thickness values during the optimization iteration. Finally, the square plate is used to find out the optimum thickness distribution of plates according to different essential boundary condition.

  • Fail-safe design of machine elements or structural members is very aim of the whole mankind. Fracture occurs generally from cracks that exist originally or produced from flaws. The most important job we have to do is to make stopping or decreasing the crack growth rate. For fail-safe design variable thickness plates have been used as structural members in practical engineering services. In this paper, optimum design of CT type plate with varlng thickness is studied with the theoritical analysis. The theoritical analysis was based on the stress concentration and nominal stress analysis. From the study, the optimum design curve was determined for use of designing of such structures using the computer analysis program of optimum design.

  • Plasma display panel(PDP) have gained great attention due to their potential application to large-area display including HDTV. The luminance and luminous efficiency of PDP, however, should be improved to realize this goal. In this study, we examined experimentally the effects of phosphor thickness and discharge gap on the luminance and luminous efficiency of ac PDP. For the rib height of 110 ${\mu}m$, whereas the optimum phosphor thickness was about 30 ${\mu}m$. The optimum thickness of green phosphor was about 50 ${\mu}m$ for the rib height of $120{\sim}160\;{\mu}m$.

  • The benefit of reinforced roadbeds, such as roadbed reinforced with slag and roadbed with crushed stone has been known among engineers. In this study, model soil box test is executed to determine optimum roadbed thickness. As a result, a empirical solution for the settlement of reinforced roadbeds was suggested. Furthermore, optimum thickness of reinforced roadbed could be determined based on the settlement characteristic of reinforced roadbed among the several variables.

  • A triangular fin with variable fin base thickness and base height is analyzed and optimized for the fixed fin base height using a two-dimensional analytical method. At the middle of the fin length, the variation of the temperature along the fin height is listed. The influences of the fin length, base thickness and base height on the heat loss and fin efficiency are analyzed, The optimum heat loss, corresponding optimum efficiency and optimum fin length as a function of the fin base thickness are presented. The optimum heat loss and optimum fin tip length as a function of the convection characteristic number are represented.

Optimum design of axially symmetric cylindrical reinforced concrete walls

  • The main aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between thickness and height of the axially symmetric cylindrical reinforced concrete (RC) walls by the help of a meta-heuristic optimization procedure. The material cost of the wall which includes concrete, reinforcement and formwork, was chosen as objective function of the optimization problem. The wall thickness, compressive strength of concrete and diameter of reinforcement bars were defined as design variables and tank volume, radius and height of the wall, loading condition and unit cost of material were defined as design constants. Numerical analyses of the wall were conducted by using superposition method (SPM) considering ACI 318-Building code requirements for structural concrete. The optimum wall thickness-height relationship was investigated under three main cases related with compressive strength of concrete and density of the stored liquid. According to the results, the proposed method is effective on finding the optimum design with minimum cost.

  • A pin fin is optimized based on the increasing rate of heat loss by using a two-dimensional analytic method. The optimum heat loss, corresponding optimum thermal resistance and fin length are presented as a function of the fin base thickness, convection characteristic numbers ratio, fin outer radius and ambient convection characteristic number. One of the results shows that both the optimum heat loss and fin length decrease linearly whereas the optimum thermal resistance increases very slightly with increase of the fin base thickness.

  • The frontal crash optimization of S-shaped closed-hat section member using the homogenization method, design of experiment (DOE) and response surface method (RSM) was studied. The optimization to effectively absorb more crash energy was studied to introduce the reinforcement design. The main focus of design was to decide the optimum size and thickness of reinforcement. In this study, the location of reinforcement was decided by homogenization method. Also, the effective size and thickness of reinforcements was studied by design of experiments and response surface method. The effects of various impact velocity for reinforcement design were researched. The high impact velocity reinforcement design showed to absorb the more crash energy than low velocities design. The effect of size and thickness of reinforcement was studied and the sensitivity of size and thickness was different according to base thickness of model. The optimum size and thickness of the reinforcement has shown a direct proportion to the thickness of base model. Also, the thicker the base model was, the effect of optimization using reinforcement was the bigger. The trend curve for effective size and thickness of reinforcement using response surface method was obtained. The predicted size and thickness of reinforcement by RSM were compared with results of DOE. The results of a specific dynamic mean crushing loads for the predicted design by RSM were shown the small difference with the predicted results by RSM and DOE. These trend curves can be used as a basic guideline to find the optimum reinforcement design for S-shaped member.
