The authors have developed a calculating method of propeller shaft alignment by the finite element method. The propeller shaft is divided into finite elements which can be treated as uniform section bars. For each element, the nodal point equation is derived from the stiffness matrix, the external force vector and the section force vector. Then the overall nodal point equation is derived from the element nodal point equation. The deflection, offset, bending moment and shearing force of each nodal point are calculated from the overall nodal point equation by the digital computer. Reactions and deflections of supporting points of straight shaft are calculated and also the reaction influence number is derived. With the reaction influence number the optimum alignment condition that satisfies all conditions is calculated by the simplex method of linear programming. All results of calculation are compared with those of Det norske Veritas, which has developed a computor program based on the three-moment theorem of the strength of materials. The authors finite element method has shown good results and will be used effectively to design the propeller shaft alignment.

The author has developed the computer program in order to calculate the optimum alignment condition of marine propulsion shafting by linear programming method. The input of program was calculated by the matrix method of three-moment. He compared the calculated values with the experimental values measured by the strain gage on the model shaft, and the values of calculation on actual propulsion shafting with those of Det norske Veritas. The computer program of optimum alignment has been applied to the actual shaft. The results obtained are as follows: 1. To obtain the reaction of supporting points in the straight line necessary to the optimum alignment and the reaction influence number, after the computer program had been developed and then adapted, the result of experimental values and calculated values agreed with each other and the values of the actual shaft were also approximately similar to the values of other program. 2. In this paper, the measuring method on model shaft by strain gage can be effectively used at the time of adjusting alignment condition of actual shaft. 3. The supporting bearing should be considerably readjusted to the vertical direction in order to satisfy some limited condition.
In this study, Based on the optimization developed in Um et al. (2009), optimum design method of the alignment when building new lines and renewing existing ones is presented. The object function used for optimization is passenger comfort ($P_{CT}$) which was proposed in BSI (2006). Other aspects of track/vehicle interaction will be treated in boundary conditions. And track/vehicle interaction analysis is peformed using KTX-II model. From the analysis results, it was found that the optimum alignments are affected by the angle (I) between adjacent straight lines and $R-L_t$ combinations. Also the dynamic analysis confirms well the results from the simplified analysis. However, In the most cases, the $P_{CT}$ values in the dynamic analysis are higher than the simplified $P_{CT}$ values. If both methods are used when optimizing the alignment, it will be possible to design the alignments more rapidly and reliably.

Damages of the main engine aftmost bearing and the after stern tube bearing tend to increase due to misalignment. And as the shafting system becomes stiffer due to the large engine power, whereas the hull structure becomes more flexible due to optimization by using high tensile thin steel plates. And this is the reason that more sophisticated shaft alignments are required. In this study, the optimum shafting alignment calculation was carried out, considering the thermal expansion effect, exploiting the sensitivity index, which indicates the reasonable position of forward intermediate shaft bearing for shaft alignment. and as the main subject in this study, the elastic deformation on intermediate shaft and main engine bearings occurred by vertical load of shaft mass were examined thoroughly and analyzed allowable load of bearings, reaction influence numbers of all bearings. As the result, a reliable optimum shafting alignment was derived theoretically. To verify these results, they were referred to the engine maker's technical information of main engine installation and being used shafting alignment programs of both Korean Register of Shipping and Det Norske Veritas, their reliability were reviewed.

Proper shaft alignment is one of the most important actions during the design of the propulsion system. The stiffness of recently designed marine propulsion shafting has been increasing remarkably, whereas hull structures have become more likely to deform as a result of optimized design of the scantlings and the high tensile steel. Therefore, to obtain the optimum status in shafting alignment at the design stage, it is strongly recommended that the change of bearing reaction force depending on ballast/load condition, the bending moment force occurred by propeller thrust, elastic deformation of bearing occurred by vertical load of shaft mass and etc., should be considered. This paper dealing with introduction of shaft alignment concerning long shaft for high speed vessel and review its reliability evaluation theoretically.

Recently, in VLCC, shafting system is stiffer due to large engine power whereas hull structure is more flexible due to scantling optimization, which can be suffered from alignment damage by incompatibility between shafting and hull, In this study, shafting system without stern tube forward bush was adapted for less sensitive system against external factors. Also, shaft alignment analysis was considered with hull deflection at various ship loading conditions and stern tube after bush of long journal bearing was evaluated by static squeezing pressure and dynamic oil film pressure with sloping control. Whirling vibration was also reviewed to avoid resonance with propeller blade order. So, reliable shafting design for VLCC could be achieved through optimized alignment analysis for the system without stern tube forward bush.
Without any doubts, the characteristics of regional, lines and lines section have dominating effects on the railway design of rectification to linear alignment. There are basically many types of characteristics: a) geological condition b) operation plan of lines and lines section c) condition of lines facilities level. The conventional deign method were exclusively used to railway design and construction. However, lot the optimum design, the more detail study are required.
In this paper, a method for determining the boundary conditions which are derived from the random obstacles on the curves was presented. An algorism using this method is also developed. This determination method can be used for a good engineering tool in optimal curve design and an Radius-transition curve length(R-$L_t$) combination within the permissible zone can be improved without any increased costs.

This research is to reconstruction of railway alignment using GPS data, an investigation is made on the method of optimum simplification for reduction of unnecessary linear data, improve the accuracy by using four simplification algorithms among the methods. By applying two measured of displacement between observed data and it's simplification methods have been evaluated. The results showed that the complexities of lines is not practical to investigate simplification algorithms, the Douglas-Peucker method produced a little displacement between observed data and it's simplification. Its by using the Douglas-Peucker method to observed linear GPS data in railway track, design elements of horizontal alignment have been calculated. Then we could know that obtain the good results fur reconstruction of alignment elements through the methods and algorithns of this study.
