Optimum Cultivation Condition of Dunaliella Salina: Effects of Light Emitting Diode as a Lighting Source, Temperature, Light Intensity and Air Flow Rates (해양미세조류 Dunaliella Salina 최적 배양을 위한 연구: LED 조명, 온도, 광도 및 공기주입 속도에 따른 효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine optimum wavelength, light intensity, aeration rate, and temperature for the cultivation of Dunaliella salina illuminated by various types of light emitting diode. Growth rates of Dunaliella salina were faster at higher temperature than the growth rate at lower temperature. Among the culturing temperatures, $22^{\circ}C$ was the optimum temperature for the growth of Dunaliella salina. White LED was the most efficient light source and lower light intensity (3,000 Lux) resulted in better biomass production (1.30 g/L). The value of aeration varied between 0 and 2.4 vvm at the illumination of 3,000 Lux of white light emitting diode. Highest specific growth rate of $1.12day^{-1}$ was obtained at no-aeration and lower specific growth rates were obtained for other aeration tests, which indicated that aeration could be harmful for the cultivation of Dunaliella salina.

  • We investigate theoretically the tolerance of 40 Gbps phase-modulated (PM) duobinary signals using a vestigial sideband (VSB) filter on impairments which occurred in dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) systems, compared to the conventional duobinary signals. Our simulation results show that PM duobinary signals can't have the gain on the spectral efficiency achieved by utilizing the VSB filtering technique. In order to increase the spectral efficiency, they indispensably require to be transmitted at the optimum bandwidth of multiplexer (MUX) and demultiplexer (DEMUX) since they are susceptible to inter-channel crosstalk. It is also shown that the PM duobinary modulation format has a large tolerance on self-phase modulation (SPM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) under the condition which MUX and DEMUX have been tuned at an optimum bandwidth; it has 1.2 dB power penalty at the fiber launching power (FLP) of 15 dBm and the channel spacing of 50 GHz.

  • We carried out the useful theoretical calculation for the optimum design of a 1.48 ${\mu}m$ diode laser pumped E$r^{3+}$ doped fiber amplifier. The model we established is based on the rate equations of three level laser system and the overlap integral between fundamental mode L$P_{01}$ and E$r^{3+}$ doped area. We determined several fiber parameters (N.A., V value, fiber length, E$r^{3+}$ concentration, cutoff wavelength etc.) for the optimum design of a high optical gain. We found that our theoretical results are very useful to the design of E$r^{3+}$ doped fiber used in EDFA.

Studies on the Light-Induced Mitochondrial ATP Synthase in Pleurotus ostreotus (느타리버섯 중의 광감응성 Mitochondrial ATP Synthase 에 관한 연구)

  • Mitochondria in Pleurotus ostreatus was purified by stepped sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The mitochondrial ATP synthase was investigated by various waveof the illumination at dark room for 30 min. The mitochondrial ATP synthase activity was stimulated 2.3 fold by 480 nm illumination compared with the broad wavelength group. The mitochondrial ATP synthase activity according to various times of illumination was stimulated 4.2 fold for 15 min at 480 nm compared with the broad wavelength group. The optimum pH and optimum temperature of the mitochondrial ATP synthase were 7.5 and $56^{\circ}C$, respectively. The activity of this enzyme was stimulated by 0.5 mmol $Fe^{2+}$, 1.0 mmol $Fe^{3+}$ and 5.0 mmol $k^+$ ion, but inhibited by 0.1 mmol $Na^+$ ion.

  • A method to determine simultaneously fluorene and anthracene in aqueous solution by synchronous fluorescence spectrometry has been studied. The emission characteristics and optimum wavelength interval (${\Delta}{\lambda}$) for synchronous spectra of fluorene and anthracene in aqueous solution were investigated. The optimum wavelength interval (${\Delta}{\lambda}$) was found to be 50 nm. The calibration curve for fluorene and anthracene in the synthetic mixture solution of both compounds was linear over the range from $5.0{\times}10^{-8}M$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-3}M$ and from $5.0{\times}10^{-8}M$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-3}M$ for fluorene and anthracene, respectively. The detection limit was $3.0{\times}10^{-9}M$ and $7.0{\times}10^{-9}M$, for fluorene and anthracene, respectively under the optimal wavelength interval.

  • This paper compares four network con-figurations for using as the logical topology in multi- hop wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. The regular network configurations studied in this paper axe ShuffleNet, de Bruijn graph, hypercube, and Man-hattan street network. Instead of using the weight mean hop distance of node placement problem for comparing optimum logical topology, we introduce a new objective function that includes h and the network cost. It can be seen that the network cost strongly depends on the logical topology selected for the implementation of the network. The objective of this paper is to find an optimum logical topology for WDM networks that gives low as well as low network cost.

  • In this paper, we present parametric studies for the optimum design of a hexagonal plate monopole antenna. The dependence of the antenna performance on various geometric parameters is investigated using a commercial electromagnetic software, from which an optimum design of a hexagonal plate monopole antenna is derived. Guidelines for determining initial parameter values are given. The diameter of the circular ground plane is minimized tlo 1/5 wavelength at the lowest operating frequency. The antenna impedance matching is controlled by adjusting the gap between the plate and the ground plane, the plate base width, and the base bevel angle. The antenna proposed in. this paper shows a reflection coefficient less than -10 dB and a $2.0{\sim}6.2$ dBi gain over $3{\sim}20$ GHz frequencies.

Double-pass Second Harmonics Generation of Tunable CW Infrared Laser Beam of DOFA System in Periodically Poled LiNbO3 (PPLN 비선형 결정과 이중통과법을 이용한 DOFA 시스템에서 증폭된 연속발진형 파장가변 적외선 레이저광의 제 2고조파 발생)

  • The optimum conditions of second harmonic generation (SHG) can be successfully achieved experimentally using single pass and double pass methods of a pumping beam. The beam has a power of several Watts radiated by a DOFA (Diode Laser Oscillator & Fiber Amplifier) system, which is a high power CW wavelength tunable infrared laser system, in a PPLN (Periodically Poled MgO doped Lithium Niobate) nonlinear crystal. In the case of a single pass method, the parameters are the wavelength of 535 nm for SHG and the output power of 245 mW generated from the pumping input beam with wavelength of 1070 nm and the power of 2.45 W at phase matching temperature of $108.9^{\circ}C$. The conversion efficiency of SHG was 10%. In order to enhance the output of SHG, the double pass method of the SHG system of a PPLN using a concave mirror for the retroreflection and a pair of wedged flat windows for phase compensation was also presented. In this double pass system, we obtained the SHG output beam with the wavelength of 535 nm and the maximum power of 383 mW at optimum phase matching temperature of $108.5^{\circ}C$ by using an incident pumping beam with wavelength of 1070 nm and the power of 2.45 W. The maximum conversion efficiency is 15.6%, which is more than that of the single pass method.

Photoluminescence Studies of InP/InGaP Quantum Structures Grown by a Migration Enhanced Molecular Beam Epitaxy

  • InP/InGaP quantum structures (QSs) grown on GaAs substrates by a migration-enhanced molecular beam epitaxy method were studied as a function of growth temperature (T) using photoluminescence (PL) and emission-wavelength-dependent time-resolved PL (TRPL). The growth T were varied from $440^{\circ}C$ to $520^{\circ}C$ for the formation of InP/InGaP QSs. As growth T increases from $440^{\circ}C$ to $520^{\circ}C$, the PL peak position is blue-shifted, the PL intensity increases except for the sample grown at $520^{\circ}C$, and the PL decay becomes fast at 10 K. Emission-wavelength-dependent TRPL results of all QS samples show that the decay times at 10 K are slightly changed, exhibiting the longest time around at the PL peak, while at high T, the decay times increase rapidly with increasing wavelength, indicating carrier relaxation from smaller QSs to larger QSs via wetting layer/barrier. InP/InGaP QS sample grown at $460^{\circ}C$ shows the strongest PL intensity at 300 K and the longest decay time at 10 K, signifying the optimum growth T of $460^{\circ}C$.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of light intensity and wavelength on the growth of Tetraselmis suecica and Tetraselmis tetrathele. These species were exposed to a blue light-emitting diode (LED; max=450 nm), a yellow LED (max=590 nm), a red LED (max=630 nm) and a fluorescent lamp (three wavelengths). The maximum growth rates (${\mu}_{max}$) of T. suecica and T. tetrathele under a red LED were 1.12/day and 0.95/day, respectively. Under a yellow LED, growth rates were 70% of the values for red wavelength, with low half-saturation constants (Ks). The optimum light source to ensure economically effective and productive growth in a Tetraselmis culture system (Photo-Bioreactor) would thus appear to be a three-phase culture, wherein a yellow LED is used during the lag phase and initial exponential phase to increase growth rate, followed by a red LED during the middle exponential phase to maximize growth rate, and finally a yellow LED again during the late exponential phase and stationary phase to achieve increased yield of useful bioactive substances.
