A geometry modification is one of main keys in achieving a successful optimization. The optimized hull form generated from the geometry modification should be a realistic, faired form from the ship manufacturing point of view. This paper presents a practical hull optimization procedure using a parametric modification function. In the parametric modification function method, the initial ship geometry was easily deformed according to the variations of design parameters. For example, bulbous bow can be modified with several parameters such as bulb area, bulb length, bulb height etc. Design parameters are considered as design variables to modify hull form, which can reduce the number of design variables in optimization process and hence reduce its time cost. To verify the use of the parametric modification function, optimization for KCS was performed at its design speed (FN=0.26) and the wave making resistance is calculated using a well proven potential code with fully nonlinear free surface conditions. The design variables used are key design parameters such as Cp curve, section shape and bulb shape. This study shows that the hull form optimized by the parametric modification function brings 7.6% reduction in wave making resistance. In addition, for verification and comparison purpose, a direct geometry variation method using a bell-shape modification function is used. It is shown that the optimal hull form generated by the bell-shaped modification function is very similar to that produced by the parametric modification function. However, the total running time of the parametric optimization is six times shorter than that of the bell shape modification method, showing the effectiveness and practicalness from a designer point of view in ship yards.
This investigation presents a method to design an optimal shape of a matching waveguide connecting two waveguides having different impedances. The design objective is to maximize power transmission through the waveguide system. When an incident wave impinges on an elastic waveguide system consisting of waveguides of different impedances, all of the incident wave power may not pass through due to the mechanical impedance. Therefore, the maximization of the transmitted power through a waveguide difficult to achieve without a systematic design method. In this work, the optimal shape design of a matching waveguide connecting two waveguides of different impedances is formulated as a shape optimization problem. If the material of the matching waveguide is given, its shape is the only parameter controlling the transmission power. Relatively simple one dimensional elastic wave transmission problems will be considered in this work, but the underlying methodology and the related physics can be clearly demonstrated. The influences of initial configurations as well as the target frequencies on the optimized shapes will be also investigated.
There are two types of solenoid actuator for force and position control of the fluid power system. One is an on-off solenoid actuator and the other is an electro-magnetic proportional actuator. They have some different characteristics for attraction force according to solenoid shape. Attraction force of the on-off solenoid actuator only depends on flux density. And the stroke-force characteristics of the proportional solenoid actuator are determined by the shape of the control cone. In this paper, steady state characteristics of the solenoid actuator for electro-hydraulic proportional valve determined by the shape of control cone are analyzed using finite element method and it is confirmed that the proportional solenoid actuator has a constant attractive force in the control region independently on the stroke position. And the shape of control cone is optimized using 1+1 evolution strategy to get a constant force. In the optimization algorithm, control cone length, thickness and taper length are used as a design parameter.
In the current study, automatic tool compensation is accomplished by using a finite element stamping analysis for a center roof rail made of UHSS in order to satisfy the specifications for shape accuracy. The initial blank shape is calculated from a finite element inverse analysis and potential forming defects such as tearing and wrinkling are determined by the finite element stamping analysis based on the initial tool shape. The blank shape is optimized to meet the shape requirements of the final product with the stamping analysis, and die compensation is determined with the information about springback. The specifications for shape accuracy were successfully achieved by the proposed die compensation scheme using the finite element stamping analysis. The current study demonstrates that the compensation tendency is similar when the proposed scheme is used or when the compensation is performed by trial and error in the press-shop. This similarity verifies that the automatic compensation scheme can be used effectively in the first stage of tool design especially for components made from UHSS.
In this study, in order to prevent cavitation in a variable swash-plate type hydraulic pump, a basic model impeller has been applied to a new pump, and the impeller shape has been optimized through flow analysis. Based on the analysis results, we could propose an impeller shape with high efficiency and low possibility of cavitation in comparison with the basic model. The simplification of the basic shape of the impeller of the hydraulic pump was performed in three parts in the order of hub shape, wing, and curvature, and eight design parameters were defined to satisfy the design requirement. Compared with the initial model of the impeller, when the differential pressure of the optimum model increased, the efficiency was improved. It achieved the goal of design improvement because cavitation did not occur under the rated operating conditions.
In the recent field of Machining, with the improving efficiency of processing, the index table is a key unit according to the increase of parts in available processing when working with the three axes at the same time. As an essential product of MCT, the index tables effect an influence on product quality of machined parts. Therefore, it is necessary to design the shape of index table with stability, high stiffness, lightweight structure. In this study, the optimal shape of index table was proposed using by design of experiment. The maximum displacement and stress analysis were carried out by using FEM software. The optimized shape was verified by using the statistical software. The results of shape optimization were confirmed that both displacement and stress were reduced in comparison with initial model.
Recently, aluminium usage in the automobile industry has been increased cause of its lightweight. The aluminium has a melting-solidification process in producing line and another melting process was needed in manufacturing process. Two times of melting process for making ingot and casting not only makes the loss of time and money but contaminates the air with Sox, Nox. For this reason, the holding furnace with laminated adiabatic material was developed. This holding furnace can deliver the molten aluminium directly to the industry needing molten aluminium. Recent holding furnace has above $15^{\circ}C/h$ of cooling rate and that causes solidification of molten aluminium. The ANSYS software was used to analysis the heat transfer. The adiabatic materials were laminated with optimized arrangement and holding furnace shape was changed with optimized modelling by ANSYS analysis for reducing the cooling rate of molten aluminium in holding furnace.
This paper describes on aerodynamic characteristics of pantograph system for Next generation high speed train(HEMU-400). The pantograph which supports electric power is located on the roof. Because of this, it generate high drag, severe acoustic noise and vibration which induced unstable flow due to complex configuration. Therefore, the design of high efficient pantograph needs to increase operational speed. In this research, wind tunnel tests were performed to design a high efficient pantograph system using 1/4 scaled model which were KTX-II pantograph, single arm pantograph and periscope type pantograph with square cylinder shape panhead and optimized shape panhead. For real operational condition, flow directions were adapted by rotation of pantograph. From this results of wind tunnel, it is checked that the pantograph with optimized panhead and single arm type or periscope type has better aerodynamic performance. In addition, lift control device and spoiler in pantograph were tested to investigate the validity of application.
Recently, a switched reluctance motor is widely used in various industries because it has many advantages such as a simple structure, robustness, less maintenance, high torque/weight ratio, and easy speed control over other types of motors. However, a switched reluctance motor inherently produces acoustic noise and vibration caused by torque ripple. Applications of these motors where silent operation is desirable have thus been limited. In this paper, a new stator pole face having a non-uniform air-gap and a pole shoe attached to the lateral face of the rotor pole are suggested in order to minimize torque ripple. The effects of each design parameter are validated using a time-stepping finite element method. The parameters are optimized by utilizing response surface method (RSM) combined with (1+1) evolution strategy. The result shows that the optimized shape gives higher average torque and drastically reduced torque ripple.
