  • A new approach to process optimal design in non-isothermal, non-steady state metal forming is presented. In this approach, the optimal design problem is formulated on the basis of the integrated thermo-mechanical finite element process model so as to cover a wide range of the objective functions and design variables, and the derivative based approach is adopted for conducting optimization by design iteration. The process model, the formulation for process optimal design, and the procedures for the evaluation of the design sensitivity and for design iteration for optimization are described.

  • This objective of this paper is to develop an efficient method with small memory requirement for a feed-mixing problem on a micro computer. First this method uses the decomposition principle to reduce the memory requirement. Next, the decomposition principle is modified to fit the problem. Further four different variations in solving subproblems are designed in order to improve efficiency of the principle. According to the test with respect to the processing time, the best variation is such that the dual simplex method is used, and the optimal basis of a previous subproblem is used as an initial basis, and the master problem is (M +1) dimensional. In general, the convergence of solution becomes slower near the optimal value. This paper introduces a termination criterion for a sufficiently good solution. According to the test, 5%-tolerence is acceptable with respect to the relation between the processing time and optimal value.

  • In this paper we show that for each finite frame for a Hilbert space there are two orthonormal elements related to the optimal lower and upper bounds of the frame. Based on this we show that an orthonormal basis is naturally associated with every finite frame. We then analyze the relationship between such an orthonormal basis and the given finite frame.

  • In H/W implementation for the finite field, the use of normal basis has several advantages, especially the optimal normal basis is the most efficient to H/W implementation in $GF(2^m)$. The finite field $GF(2^m)$ with type I optimal normal basis(ONB) has the disadvantage not applicable to some cryptography since m is even. The finite field $GF(2^m)$ with type II ONB, however, such as $GF(2^{233})$ are applicable to ECDSA recommended by NIST. In this paper, we propose a bit-parallel multiplier over $GF(2^m)$ having a type II ONB, which performs multiplication over $GF(2^m)$ in the extension field $GF(2^{2m})$. The time and area complexity of the proposed multiplier is the same as or partially better than the best known type II ONB bit-parallel multiplier.

  • Fenton reaction with zerovalent iron (ZVI) and $Fe^{2+}$ ions was studied to treat pharmaceutical wastewaters (PhWW) including antibiotics and non-biodegradable organics. Incremental biodegradability was assessed by monitoring biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) changes during Fenton reaction. Original undiluted wastewater samples were used as collected from the pharmaceutical factory. Experiments were carried out to obtain optimal conditions for Fenton reaction under different $H_2O_2$ and ion salts (ZVI and $Fe^{2+}$) concentrations. The optimal ratio and dosage of $H_2O_2$/ZVI were 5 and 25/5 g/L (mass basis), respectively. Also, the optimal ratio and dosage of $H_2O_2/Fe^{2+}$ ions were 5 and 35/7 g/L (mass basis), respectively. Under optimized conditions, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency by ZVI was 23% better than the treatment with $Fe^{2+}$ ion. The reaction time was 45 min for ZVI and shorter than 60 min for $Fe^{2+}$ ion. The COD and total organic carbon (TOC) were decreased, but BOD was increased under the optimal conditions of $H_2O_2$/ZVI = 25/5 g/L, because organic compounds were converted into biodegradable intermediates in the early steps of the reaction. The BOD/TOC ratio was increased, but reverse-wise, the COD/TOC was decreased because of generated intermediates. The biodegradability was increased about 9.8 times (BOD/TOC basis), after treatment with ZVI. The combination of chemical and biological processes seems an interesting combination for treating PhWW.

  • This paper deals with the perishable inventory models with uncertainties of demand functions. The traditional perishable inventory costs of holding and stockout are incorporated into the cost function. The average expected cost will be minimized to find the optimal quantile estimator. After three candidate estimators are proposed on the basis of order statistics, they will be evaluated by the simulation results and statistical analysis. Then the transition procedure algorithm using this estimator will be proposed to make the optimal decision under uncertainty.

  • Motion estimation plays an important role for video coding. In this paper, we derive optimal search patterns for fast block matching motion estimation. By analyzing the block matching algorithm as a function of block shape and size, we can find an optimal search pattern for initial motion estimation. The proposed idea, which has been verified experimentally by computer simulations, can provide an analytical basis for the current MPEG-2 proposals. In order to choose a more compact search pattern for BMA, we exploit the statistical relationship between the motion and the frame difference of each block.

  • The design and application of optimal control technique to the rotary shearing system is mentioned in this paper. To maximize the accuracy in both shearing length and blade speed at shearing, time-varying gain patterns for closed loop control are designed on the basis of fixed terminal time constrained optimal regulator. The performance accuracy in real application has greatly improved than the conventional way of shearing control.

  • The original tolerances, which are assigned by designers on the basis of handbooks and experience, cannot always be expected to be optimal or feasible, because they may yield an unacceptable manufacturing costs. So the systematic tolerance design considering manufacturing costs should be done. Therefore, this research analyzes the tolerance within the tolerance design using Monte-Carlo simulation method and sensitivity analysis and using genetic algorithm by tolerance allocation method. The genetic algorithm was developed for allocation of the optimal tolerance under the manufacturing limitation cost.
