  • Since 1989 the number of nationally licensed ophthalmic and refracting opticians in Korea have increased. Currently, they are being educated in four universities, twenty six colleges and three graduate programs. It is innevitable that the growth of optometric education in Korea will be progressively influnced by worldwide influnces such as the World Council of Optometry(WCO), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Trade Organization(WTO). However, currently no standards for optometric education exist in Korea. Thus, the Korean Professional Councils of Ophthalmic Optics(KPCOO) must develope and provide standards for optometric education programs.

  • Purpose: To investigate request for optical shop startup education of ophthalmic optics students as a basic source for startup education. Methods: Total of 287 students' from three ophthalmic optics college in Kyung-gi region was surveyed and analyzed the data using SPSS analysis. Results: Most students didn't have experience of optical shop startup business education (94.4%). However, the request of startup education was very high (89.9%) and there was significant difference according to grade (p<0.01). The most wanted education for the student who want to opening a shop was a lecture related to finding best place for the shop. For importances of select a site and purchasing information of frame, lens, contact lens in startup education were significant difference according to correction of visual acuity (p<0.001, p<0.05) and optician family present (p<0.05, p<0.001). For importance of customer management and publicity activities was significant difference according to correction of visual acuity (p<0.05). Conclusions: For request of optical shop startup education was very high and need to having startup education.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how optics concepts and activities have changed according to the revision of the national science curriculum. For this purpose, the optics achievement standards presented in the middle-school science curriculum of the 7th curriculum, 2007 revised curriculum, 2009 revised curriculum, and 2015 revised curriculum, and the optics content presented in the textbooks developed for each curriculum, were compared and analyzed. The optics content is classified into four concepts: the process of viewing an object; light and color; reflection and refraction; and the image from a mirror and a lens. The main results are as follows: First, according to the revision of curriculum, some optics concepts have been added or removed. In particular, big changes have appeared in the concepts of "process of viewing the object", "dispersion", "reflection and refraction" and so on. Second, the content for 'image formation by a mirror and a lens' was gradually reduced, according to the revision of curriculum, and the level of activity was also adjusted. Third, attempts to present the content of textbooks in conjunction with the phenomena and tools that students can experience in everyday life have increased gradually. In addition, based on the analysis of the content of curriculum and textbooks, the implications for optics education have been discussed.

  • In this study, we presented a research about the development of the phoropter simulation program for education using the 3-D virtual reality in order to study the ophthalmic optics rather efficiently. Especially, by putting the facility such as the refractive error analysis of the eyeball in the cyber tutor inside, we have made the learner to learn and confirm the present situation of refractive correction through refractive power of principal meridians. By organizing the system which induces the active involvement of the learner and showing the result of the execution to the learner intuitively, the implementation of the more efficient education-environment can be possible. Consequently, it is expected that this program will be greatly helpful for the optician training as well as the ophthalmic optics education. As a next phase of study, we will develope the development technique of this simulator more and extend the cyber tutor contents more and make the web service version of this program to be provided through the internet network in order to inspire the learning desire of the learner more and more.

  • In this communication, we present an expression to determine thermal lensing in isotropic materials. The heat equation is analytically solved when a Gaussian spatial laser beam profile is introduced to a cylindrical geometry of optics using a complete set of Bessel functions. This expression permits explicit calculation of variation of focal length induced by thermal lensing and allows thermal effects for various material parameters on the optics. We applied our model to a high absorption material (Ti:sapphire) and also transparent material (thallium garnet or TGG) and found that the thermal lensing can be reduced more than 4 times by adjusting the laser beam waist and optics dimensions. Our analysis is completely general and applicable to any optical system.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate and analyze understanding and knowledge of the eye in biological science education for middle and high school students in Busan. Methods: A total of 821 middle and high school students from four different schools participated by self-administered questionnaire test. The results were compared and analyzed by grade and gender. Results: In the survey of the understanding about the eye in the biological science curriculum, the results indicated that the more learning of the eye in biological science lecture led to the more understanding of the role of the eye. The difference of understanding the eye between learned and unlearned students in biological sciences lecture was significant (p<0.01). In the survey of the knowledge of the eye, students did not know about myopia and astigmatism (average value <50). Conclusions: As biological science education is one of the major factors to understand the role of the eye, this result suggests that more information about the eye in the curriculum of biology is included.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate some implications for optics education and improvement of the Examination for Appointing Secondary School Physics Teachers (EASSPT), by analyzing the problems in EASSPT. For these purpose, we analyzed 38 optics problems of the EASSPT from the 16 school years of 2002 to 2017. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, optics problems were presented in 10.8% of the physics subject area, which was least frequently. Second, many problems have addressed specific areas such as Snell's law, image of a single lens, or interference. Few problems were found in many other evaluation areas, including optical instruments and aberrations. Third, compared to other areas, optics problems were presented as relatively easy questions, and the problems were presented in more laboratory contexts than daily-life contexts. In addition, we have discussed implications for EASSPT and in-service physics-teacher training.

  • In this paper a very brief review of historical development of optical science and technology in China is presented. More attention has been pain on Modem Optics, which developed since 1950s. The recent development of optical science and technology in following fields are introduced. 1. Optical engineering and instrumentation (tracking theodolites, high speed cameras, satellite laser ranging systems, satellite flying attitude control, cameras for remote sensing, astronomical optical instrument) 2. Applied optics (adaptive optics, optical metrology, infrared optics, optical processing, optical holography) 3. Laser science and technology (ultrashort pulse lasers, UV-X ray lasers, high power laser facilities and laser fusion, laser isotope separation) 4. Laser and nonlinear materials (rare earth elements doped laser glasses and crystals, tunable laser crystals, borate series and organic nonlinear crystals) 5. Optoelectronic science and technology (Optical communication, optical data storage, optical computing) The current situation and developing prospect of optical and optoelectronic industry in China are presented. Furthermore it points out that the optical industry could be developed vigorously only if products development capacity is enhanced and new products industrialization is heightened. The main research and education institutions in the optics field in China, as well as the Chinese Optical Society (COS) are introduced.

  • In this study, we explored the meaning of science education in an inclusive education setting tram the view of the epistemological approach, and discussed the principles and theories for constructing an educational program. Also, we explored the possibility of inclusive education in science education by suggesting principles for practice: accommodating science curriculum macroscopically, adapting science curriculum microscopically, considering diversity in science instruction, sharing the differences in science teaching and learning, and restructuring the assessment system in science education. We also reviewed the case on learning basic concepts in optics for the visually impaired according to the principles discussed. In conclusion, we discussed the considerations for the practice of inclusive education in science education and inferred further research problems.
