  • The luminance properties of FFL(Flat Fluorescent Lamp) backlights have been investigated in detail for the first time. The on-axis luminance gain as well as viewing-angle characteristics on various combinations of optical films were obtained from FFL backlight and compared to the results of conventional CCFL(cold-cathode fluorescent lamps) backlights. It was found that the on-axis luminance gains achieved by using optical films in the FFL backlight were lower than those in the CCFL backlight indicating that the recycling processes occurring between optical films and light sources/reflection sheet are not so effective in the FFL backlight due to the much larger area of, and thus higher absorption probability of the FFL. This result suggests that new optical films should be developed for FFL backlight and other flat-lamp backlight technologies.

  • Graphene is very interesting 2 dimensional material providing unique properties. Especially, graphene has been investigated as a stretchable and transparent conductor due to its high mobility, high optical transmittance, and outstanding mechanical properties. On the contrary, high sheet resistance of extremely thin monolayer graphene limits its application. Artificially stacked multilayer graphene is used to decrease its sheet resistance and has shown improved results. However, stacked multilayer graphene requires repetitive and unnecessary transfer processes. Recently, growth of multilayer graphene has been investigated using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method but the layer controlled synthesis of multilayer graphene has shown challenges. In this paper, we demonstrate controlled growth of multilayer graphene using a two-step process with multi heating zone low pressure CVD. The produced graphene samples are characterized by optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Raman spectroscopy is used to distinguish a number of layers in the multilayer graphene. Its optical and electrical properties are also analyzed by UV-Vis spectrophotometer and probe station, respectively. Atomic resolution images of graphene layers are observed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM).

  • We study on the optical and electrical properties of indium-free ZTO(ZnSnO)/Ag/ZTO (ZAZ) multilayer electrodes for the low-cost transparent electrode. In the first step, each single layer was deposited using rf magnetron in-line sputter with various working pressure based on $O_2$/$Ar+O_2$ ratio (0~3%) and power at room temperature. Secondly, we studied the optical and electrical properties by analyzing the refractive index, extinction coefficient, transmittance and resistivity of each layer. Finally, we optimized the thickness of each layer using macleod simulation program based on the analyzed optical properties and fabricated the multilayer electrode. As a result, We achieved a low sheet resistance of $11{\Omega}$/sq and anaverage transmittance of 80% in the visible region of light (380~780 nm). This indicates that indium-free ZAZ multilayer electrode is a promising low-cost and low-temperature processing electrode scheme.

  • Electromagnetic interference shielding and near-infrared cutoff filters for plasma display panel application were designed and fabricated by radio frequency magnetron sputtering. Three types of the filters were prepared: the basic structure of type A consisted of [$TiO_2$ Ti Ag $TiO_2$]; type B, of [$TiO_2$ ITO Ag $TiO_2$]; type C, of [$TiO_2$ ITO Ag ITO $TiO_2$]. Ti and ITO layers deposited on Ag layers were employed as barriers to prevent the oxidation and the diffusion of Ag film into the adjacent oxide layers. Optical, electrical, chemical, and structural properties were investigated, and the result shows that the filters with the ITO barrier layers provided an enhancement in transmittance in the visible owing to a lower absorption of ITO layers than Ti layers. Type C filter showed better optical and electrical performances and smoother surface roughness than Type B and C filters: the average sheet resistance was as low as 1.51 $\Omega\Box$ (where $\square$ stands for a square film), the peak transmittance in the visible was as high as 78.2 %, and the average surface roughness was 1.48 nm.

  • ITO-Al-ITO multi-layers were deposited at room temperature by RF magnetron sputtering on polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The films were deposited at various pressures of $8\times10^{-4},\;1\times10^{-3},\;4\times10^{-3},\;8\times10^{-3}\;and\;1\times10^{-2}$ Torr. A correlation between microstructure and electro-optical properties was studied. Films deposited? at low pressure have higher transmission, and lower reflectance and resistance than film deposited at high pressure. Sheet resistance, transmission, and reflectance were $141.6\Omega/\Box\;88\%\;and\;6.8\%$ resectively when the deposition pressure was $8\times10^{-4}$ torr, that was the optimum condition.

  • We have considered the effect of electron irradiation energy of 300, 600 and 900 eV on structural, electrical and optical properties of $In_2O_3$ films prepared with RF magnetron sputtering. In this study, the thin film crystallization, optical transmittance and sheet resistance are dependent on the electron's irradiation energy. The electron irradiated $In_2O_3$ films at 900 eV are grown as a hexagonal wurtzite phase. The sheet resistance decreases with a increase in electron irradiation energy and $In_2O_3$ film irradiated at 900 eV shows the lowest sheet resistance of $110{\Omega}/{\Box}$. The optical transmittance of $In_2O_3$ films in a visible wave length region also depends on the electron irradiation energy. The film that at 900 eV shows the higher figure of merit than another films prepared in this study.

  • Strip casted and rolled magnesium sheet is become exiting material for car manufacturer, due to its better formability and specific strength compare with conventional extruded sheet. TWB technology was attractive for car body designer, because it saves the weight of the car without strength loss. In this study, the laser welding performance of magnesium sheet was investigated for Mg TWB panel manufacturing. The material was strip casted and rolled magnesium alloy sheet contains 3 wt% Al and 1 wt% Zn (AZ31). Lamp pumped Nd:YAG laser of 2kW was used and its laser light was delivered by optical fiber of 0.6mm core diameter to material surface with focusing optics of 200mm focal length for TWB welding. The microstructure of weld bead was investigated to check internal defects such as inclusion, porosity and cracks. Also mechanical properties and formability were evaluated for press forming of car body. For the results, there was no crack but inclusion or porosity on weld at some conditions. The tensile strength of weld was over 95% of base metal. Inner and outer panel of engine hood were press formed and assembled at elevated temperature.

  • Lithium ion batteries are generally manufactured by laser and etching using aluminum thin sheet. These processes are relatively expensive and have low productivity. In this study, blanking process of aluminum thin sheet for lithium ion battery was employed to replace laser cutting and etching process, all to reduce the production cost and improve productivity. Mechanical properties for aluminum and coating were determined by experimental results and rule of mixture for FE analysis of blanking process. Normalized Cockcroft-Latham criteria was also applied to describe shear behavior and critical damage values were determined by comparison of analytical and experimental result. We performed FE analysis to investigate the effects of clearance and punch-die radius on sheared surface of aluminum thin sheet and to determine optimal process condition. We manufactured the die set using the determined optimal process and conducted an experiment to confirm the feasibility of blanking process. The sheared surface of manufactured product was observed by optical microscope. As a results, the proposed process conditions successfully achieved the dimensional requirement in production of lithium ion battery parts.

  • This study is concerned with the surface quality of products according to the material and coating condition of the forming tool in incremental sheet forming. Three forming tools, SKD11 with and without diamond-like-coating (DLC) and polymer tool tip, were used to form conical and pyramidal geometries to take into account the influence of friction between the forming tool and the sheet on the surface quality including geometric accuracy of deformed samples. Each test was performed using SUS304 with a thickness of 0.4 mm according to different incremental depths per lap of 0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, and 1.5 mm for the contour tool path, considering the increase in normal force which is associated with the frictional behavior during local deformation. The surface quality was then investigated through surface roughness measured with KEYENCE VR-6000 and relative strain distribution including deformed shape analyzed with ARGUS which is a non-contact optical strain measurement system. Differences between 3D CAD surfaces and captured geometry from experiments were evaluated to compare the effect of friction on geometric accuracy. From comparisons of experimental results, it was revealed that the polymer-based tool tip can improve surface quality and geometric accuracy by reducing the undesired material flow due to local friction in the increment sheet forming process.
