This paper shows results on the application of optical fiber sensors(OFS) for locations of ultrasonic signals in silicon insulating oil. The OFS system based on the principle of Sagnac interferometry has been designed and established for this work. The hollowed cylindrical mandrel wound by single mode optical fiber was used as a sensing component and ultrasonic signals which simulate the partial discharge In the oil have been generated by PZT actuator operated with function generator. The experimental results shows that the OFS has a excellent performance for the PD location with resolutions less than 1$^{\circ}C$ error range in the miniature insulating oil tank.
Optical fiber sensors have been used to detect small amounts of chemical species. In this work, a new thin polymer-clad fiber sensor is developed. Polyaniline is chemically synthesized and thin clad layers of the polymer are easily deposited on optical fiber by dip-coating technique. The optical property of polyaniline as a sensing material is analyzed by UV-Vis-NIR. The light source is stabilized He-Ne laser at 635 nm wavelength with 1 mW power. The light power transmitted through the optical fiber is measured with a spectrophotometer. By selecting a fixed incident angle, variation of transmitted light intensity through the optical fiber can be detected as gas molecules absorbed in the polyaniline clad layer. Among the various gases, the fabricated optical fiber sensor shows good sensitivity to $NH_{3}$ gas. The optical fiber sensors was shown more improved properties than polymer based sensors which measure conductivity changes.
When raining or snowing, windshield wiper system is very important for safety of driver. However, manual wiper system frequently needed to be controlled for sufficient visibility and it was very uncomfortable. So, rain sensor which controls automatically was developed. This rain sensor technology uses optical sensing technique sensed the rainfall by receiving reflected light of rain dropped on the windshield. The technology used optical sensor was simple and easy to implement as a rain sensing system in the car. However, it is sometime shown low accuracy to measure rainfall on the windshield when affected by ambient lights from surroundings. It is also given inconvenience to the driver to control the car. To solving these problems, we propose a rain sensing system using image sensor and the fuzzy wiper control algorithm.
Volcanic ash (VA) can be estimated by remote sensing sensors through their spectral signatures determined by the inherent optical property (IOP) including complex refractive index and the scattering properties. Until now, a very limited range of VA refractive indices has been reported and the VA from each volcanic eruption has a different composition. To improve the robustness of VA remote sensing, there is a need to understanding of VA - radiation interactions. In this study, we calculated extinction coefficient, scattering phase function, asymmetry factor, and single scattering albedo which show different values between andesite and pumice. Then, IOPs were used to analyze the relationship between theoretical remote sensed radiation calculated by radiative transfer model under various aerosol optical thickness (${\tau}$) and sun-sensor geometries and characteristics of VA. It was found that the mean rate of change of radiance at top of atmosphere versus ${\tau}$ is six times larger than in radiance values at 0.55 ${\mu}m$. At the surface, positive correlation dominates when ${\tau}$ <1, but negative correlation dominates when ${\tau}$ >1. However, radiance differences between andesite and pumice at 11 ${\mu}m$ are very small. These differences between two VA types are expressed as the polynomial regression functions and that increase as VA optical thickness increases. Finally, these results would allow VA to be better characterized by remote sensing sensors.
The utilization of multispectral imaging systems (MIS) in remote sensing has become crucial for large-scale agricultural operations, particularly for diagnosing plant health, monitoring crop growth, and estimating plant phenotypic traits through vegetation indices (VIs). However, environmental factors can significantly affect the accuracy of multispectral reflectance data, leading to potential errors in VIs and crop status assessments. This paper reviewed the complex interactions between environmental conditions and multispectral sensors emphasizing the importance of accounting for these factors to enhance the reliability of reflectance data in agricultural applications. An overview of the fundamentals of multispectral sensors and the operational principles behind vegetation index (VI) computation was reviewed. The review highlights the impact of environmental conditions, particularly solar zenith angle (SZA), on reflectance data quality. Higher SZA values increase cloud optical thickness and droplet concentration by 40-70%, affecting reflectance in the red (-0.01 to 0.02) and near-infrared (NIR) bands (-0.03 to 0.06), crucial for VI accuracy. An SZA of 45° is optimal for data collection, while atmospheric conditions, such as water vapor and aerosols, greatly influence reflectance data, affecting forest biomass estimates and agricultural assessments. During the COVID-19 lockdown, reduced atmospheric interference improved the accuracy of satellite image reflectance consistency. The NIR/Red edge ratio and water index emerged as the most stable indices, providing consistent measurements across different lighting conditions. Additionally, a simulated environment demonstrated that MIS surface reflectance can vary 10-20% with changes in aerosol optical thickness, 15-30% with water vapor levels, and up to 25% in NIR reflectance due to high wind speeds. Seasonal factors like temperature and humidity can cause up to a 15% change, highlighting the complexity of environmental impacts on remote sensing data. This review indicated the importance of precisely managing environmental factors to maintain the integrity of VIs calculations. Explaining the relationship between environmental variables and multispectral sensors offers valuable insights for optimizing the accuracy and reliability of remote sensing data in various agricultural applications.

Three different applications for monitoring displacements in underground structures using a BOTDR-based distributed optical fiber strain sensing system are presented. These applications are related to the strain measurements of (1) instrumented PVC tube designed to be attached to tunnel side wall and ceiling as a sensor; (2) rock bolts for tunnels; and (3) shotcrete lining under loading. The effectiveness of using the proposed strain sensing system is evaluated by carrying out laboratory tests, in-situ measurements, and numerical simulations. The results obtained from this validation process provide confidence that the optical fiber is able to quantify strain fields under a variety of loading conditions and consequently use this information to estimate the behavior of rock mass during mining activity. As the measuring station can be located as far as 1 km of distance, these alternatives presented may increase the safety of the mine during mining process and for the personnel doing the measurements on the field.
A fiber-optic temperature sensor utilizing InP as a sensing medium was implemented and tested to determine the dependance of the optical characteristics of InP on physical parameters for the use as design parameters in this type of sensors. The optical absorption coefficient of InP has been determined through the experimental measurement of the fundamental optical absorption characteristics at various temperature points. The transmission characteristics of light source at three temperature points($249^{\circ}K$, $298^{\circ}K$, $369^{\circ}K$) are computed from the optical absorption coefficient for a fixed length of InP. A series of measurement concluded that optical absorption edge moves to longer wavelength region at a speed of 0.42 nm / $^{\circ}K$ as the specimen gets hotter, and that increasing the thickness of the InP sensing layer shifts power density curve to lower temperature region.
We investigated the detection properties of nitrogen monoxide (NO) gas using transparent p-type $CuAlO_2$ thin film gas sensors. The $CuAlO_2$ film was fabricated on an indium tin oxide (ITO)/glass substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), and then the transparent p-type $CuAlO_2$ active layer was formed by annealing. Structural and optical characterizations revealed that the transparent p-type $CuAlO_2$ layer with a thickness of around 200 nm had a non-crystalline structure, showing a quite flat surface and a high transparency above 65 % in the range of visible light. From the NO gas sensing measurements, it was found that the transparent p-type $CuAlO_2$ thin film gas sensors exhibited the maximum sensitivity to NO gas in dry air at an operating temperature of $180^{\circ}C$. We also found that these $CuAlO_2$ thin film gas sensors showed reversible and reliable electrical resistance-response to NO gas in the operating temperature range. These results indicate that the transparent p-type semiconductor $CuAlO_2$ thin films are very promising for application as sensing materials for gas sensors, in particular, various types of transparent p-n junction gas sensors. Also, these transparent p-type semiconductor $CuAlO_2$ thin films could be combined with an n-type oxide semiconductor to fabricate p-n heterojunction oxide semiconductor gas sensors.
In this study, the effects of embedded optical fibers on the static properties under tensile load and dynamic properties under fatigue load of composite laminates were investigated by experimental tests and finite element analysis. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the embedded optical fiber sensors do not have significant effects on the structural integrity of the smart composite structures except when the sensors are embedded perpendicular to the adjacent reinforcing fibers under fatigue loading. An intensity-based optical fiber sensor was embedded in the crossply composite laminates to monitor the fatigue damage by detecting the stiffness changes of the laminates. The result of this experiment has shown that the intensity-based optical fiber sensor has large potential to monitor the fatigue damage of composite structures by detecting the stiffness changes of the structures with simple and inexpensive instruments and without complex post-processing of measured signals. In addition, the optical fiber sensor showed good resistance to fatigue loading and wide sensing ranges of stiffness.

Nowadays, the utilization infrastructure of domestic satellite information is expanding rapidly. Especially, the development of agriculture and forestry satellite is expected to drastically change the utilization of satellite information in the forest sector. The launch of the satellite is expected in 2023. Therefore, NIFoS and academic experts in forest sectors have prepared "Special Issue on Forest Management Research using Optical Sensors and Remote Sensing Technologies" in order to understand new remote sensing technologies and suggest the future direction of forest research and decision-making. This special issue is focused on a variety of fields in forest remote sensing research, including forest resources survey, forest disaster detection, and forest ecosystem monitoring. The new research topics for remote sensing technologies in forest sector focuses on three points: development of new indicators and information for accurate detection of forest conditions and changes, the use of new information sources such as UAV and new satellites, and techniques for improving accuracy through the use of artificial intelligence techniques.
