  • Single-mode propagation conditions of X-ray waveguides are investigated by numerical calculations in order to understand the importance of waveguide design parameters, such as core thickness and the optical constants of waveguide materials, on the transmission and coherence properties of the waveguide. The simulation code for mode analyzing is developed based on a numerical solution of the parabolic wave equation. The initial boundary value problem is solved numerically using a finite-difference scheme based on the Crank-Nicolson scheme. The E-field intensities in a core layer are calculated at an X-ray energy of 8.0 keV for air and beryllium(Be) core waveguides with different cladding layers such as Pt, Au, W, Ni and Si to determine the dependence on waveguide materials. The highest E-field intensity radiated at the exit of the waveguide is obtained from the Pt cladded beryllium core with a thickness of 20 nm. However, the intensity from the air core waveguide with Pt cladding reaches 64% of the Be-Pt waveguide. The dependence on the core thickness, which is the major parameter used to generate a single mode in the waveguide, is investigated for the air-Pt, and Be-Pt waveguides at an X-ray energy of 8.0 keV. The mode profiles at the exit are shown for the single mode at a thickness of up to 20 nm for the air-Pt and the Be-Pt waveguides.

  • Fabrication process of strain-induced channel waveguides in $LiNbO_3$ was developed using strain-optic effect and compressional strain due to ~1.4 $\mu\textrm{m}$ surface Mo/Pt metal film. Characterization of the channel waveguides revealed a single transverse and depth mode in both TE and TM polarizations. Measurements showed total insertion loss of 6.2 and 7.7 ㏈/cm for TM and TE polarizations. respectively. Electro-optic intensity modulators with 11 mm long electrode length and 21 $\mu\textrm{m}$ electrode gap at $\lambda$ = 1.15 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$have been produced in $LiNbO_3$ substrates using strain-induced channel waveguides. Modulation depth of 100% at $\pi$-radian voltage of 16.1V has been demonstrated. Also, 1$\times$2 on/off power splitters at $\lambda$ = 0.63 $\mu\textrm{m}$ have been produced using strain-induced channel waveguides. On/off voltage of $\pm$ 25V has been demonstrated.

  • When femtosecond laser pulses are focused inside the bulk of transparent materials, the intensity in the focal volume becomes high enough to produce permanent structural modifications. This technique has been applied to fabricate three-dimensional photonic structures such as optical memory, waveguides, gratings, and couplers inside a wide variety of transparent materials. In this paper, we review the fabrication of optical elements in glasses with femtosecond laser pulses, including the fabrication of waveguides, couplers, Bragg gratings, zone plates, holographic memory, and micro holes.

  • Taking the normal mode transmission direction perpendicular to the substrate, an alternative equivalent network formulation is developed for the analysis of optical strip waveguides. All kinds of mode couplings between the normal modes are included in this formulation. Compared to the previous equivalent network formulations, the calculations are simplified especially when the thickness of the uniform slab is thin enough such that no well guided modes are available along the uniform slab waveguide.

  • We present an experimental and numerical study of spectral profiles of effective group indices of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) waveguides and of their chromatic-dispersion effect on the four-wave-mixing (FWM) signal generation. The a-Si:H waveguides of 220-nm thickness and three different widths of 400, 450 and 500 nm were fabricated by using the conventional CMOS device processes on a $2-{\mu}m$ thick $SiO_2$ bottom layer deposited on 8-inch Si wafers. Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZIs) were formed with the a-Si:H waveguides, and used for precise measurement of the effective group indices and thus for determination of the spectral profile of the waveguides' chromatic dispersion. The wavelength ranges for the FWM-signal generation were about 45, 75 and 55 nm for the 400-, 450- and 500-nm-wide waveguides, respectively, at the pump wavelength of 1532 nm. A widest wavelength range for the efficient FWM process was observed with the 450-nm-wide waveguide having a zero-dispersion near the pump wavelength.

  • Photonic crystal structures have been received considerable attention due to their high optical sensitivity. One of the techniques to construct their structure is the dip-pen lithography (DPN) process, which requires a nano-scale resolution and high reliability. In this paper, we propose a two dimensional photonic crystal array to improve the sensitivity of optical biosensor and DPN process to realize it. As a result of DPN patterning test, we have observed that the diffusion coefficient of the mercaptohexadecanoic acid (MHA) molecule ink in octanol is much larger than that in acetonitrile. In addition, we have designed and fabricated optical waveguides based on the mach-zehnder interferometer (MZI) for application to biosensors. The waveguides were optimized at a wavelength of 1550 nm and fabricated according to the design rule of 0.45 delta%, which is the difference of refractive index between the core and clad. The MZI optical waveguides were measured of the optical characteristics for the application of biosensor.

  • Polymeric multi-mode optical waveguides were fabricated for parallel optical interconnection. Waveguide structures were molded by a Ni mold master using a hot embossing technique. The Ni mold master was manufactured by LIGA process. Multimode optical waveguides with a 48$\times$47 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$$^2$cross-section were produced by a simple two-step process. The propagation losses of the multimode waveguide measured at 0.85 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 1.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ wavelengths were 0.38 dB/cm and 0.66 dB/cm, respectively.

  • This paper describes the development of a new type of an integrated optical filter using the frequency characteristics of a directly-connected directional coupler with a Rib waveguide. It has been designed for multiplexing and demultiplexing light froups in different wavelength regions. Also, the effects of higher modes, couplings between input waveguides or output waveguides, and dispersion of material are considered.

  • In this paper, we have designed and fabricated optical waveguides based on the Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) for application to sensor. The evanecent-wave sensor based on the MZI principle has sufficiently high sensitivity to measure the change of the refractive index on surface of a waveguide. The waveguides were optimized at a wavelength of 1550 nm and fabricated according to the design rule of 0.45 delta%, which is the difference of refractive index between the core and clad. The fabrication of MZI optical waveguides was performed by a conventional Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) fabrication process. The fabricated MZI optical waveguide device was measured. According to the measurement result, the insertion loss of MZI optical waveguide device was below 3.5 dB and the polarization dependent loss (PDL) was within 0.1dB. In addition, we analyzed optical properties of MZI sensor according to the refractive index change of the sensor arm.
