  • The submersion monitoring system based on a reflective side-polished optical fiber submersion sensor with an optical fiber mirror was shown to be an effective alarm system with remote monitoringwhen the drainage capacity of a common utility duct is exceeded due to heavy rainfall. The proposed sensor was connected to an existing installed optical fiber network at a height of 250mm in a common utility duct, and then tested under sample materials(distilled water, river water, sea water, foul water, muddy water, petroleum, edible oil) at a distance of 1km from the sensor for remote sensing. In experiments, the proposed real-time sensor system reduced maintenance cost and improved monitoring efficiency by using a reflection-type side-polished optical fiber submersion sensor efficient for remote monitoring of a common utility duct.

  • Newly suggested hybrid LED package can reduce the number of LED processes and enhance light efficacy in virtue of its integrated optical patterns. Square-type pyramid pattern was chosen for the integrated optical pattern in this study, and it was proved that the pattern enhances illuminance about three times and luminance about two and half times by optical simulation. Square-type pyramid patterns of 0.02mm height and 0.04mm pitch were successively machined on a copper mold which is necessary for imprinting the integrated pattern. Hybrid LED package with integrated optical pattern will be manufactured with ultra-fine machined mold in future study.

  • The optimization of the specifications of vertical silicon on insulator (SOI) slot optical waveguides suitable for integrated-optical biochemical sensors was performed through computational analysis of the confinement factor of the guided mode distributed in the slot in addition to analytical examination of the TE mode. The optimized specifications were confirmed based on sensitivity in terms of the change in the refractive index of the biochemical analyte. When the slot width, rail width, and height were set to 120 nm, 200 nm, and 320 nm, respectively, the confinement factor was evaluated to be about 56% and the sensitivity was at least 0.9 [RIU/nm].

  • The aerosol extinction vertical profile and surface visibility have been derived from the Microtops-II sunphotometer observation during the winter 2011 intensive observation period (IOP) at Seoul, Korea. Using models of degradation of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and aerosol scale height, we have performed extinction-visibility modulation to determine the height dependent aerosol extinction and visibility. It is shown that the aerosol loading is relatively low during IOP (mean $AOT_{550}=0.22{\pm}0.08$, ${\AA}$ngstr$\ddot{o}$m exponent=$1.14{\pm}0.26$). Modeled extinction by use of Microtops II sunphotometer data shows good agreement with measurements by the Multi-wavelenth Polarization Lidar (MPoLAR), and the derived surface visibility are consistent with data from the transmissometer. These results emphasize the use of a vertically resolved extinction from AOT to predict visibility conditions at ground level.

  • The shallow depth of focus in conventional light microscopy hinders the observation of the whole image when the object is thicker than the depth of field. Most of the existing techniques measured the object distance, which is not necessarily the actual distance of each pixel in the image. We implemented a means of determining the "best focus" of each pixel and located the height of object points by sectioning at different sample heights. Combining the height information and its gray values together, we obtained an image where the blur from the finite depth of focus is eliminated. Limitations of the technique are discussed together with composed images.ed images.

  • In this paper, attenuation characteristics of silica-based variable optical attenuator (VOA) with heat insulating structures are investigated by variations of structural parameters and heating power at wavelength 1.55${\mu}m$. The characteristics of power dissipation and attenuation at this VOA was optimized in terms of heating insulating width, under-cladding height and over-cladding height. The optimized maximum attenuation of this VOA was achieved about 31dB at heating power 150mW.

  • In ac plasma display(PDP), an image quality mainly depends on the contrast ratio. And the contrast ratio is affected by the driving condition and size of discharge cell. In this study, the electrical and optical characteristics during reset, address and sustain discharge were investigated as the height and width of barrier rib were varied in order to obtain the highest contrast ratio. As a result, the optimum rib height and width were 140${\mu}m$ and 600${\mu}m$, respectively.

  • The further development of information, communication and digital media technologies requires the use of advanced, miniaturized semiconductor chips that operate at a high frequency. Die bonding and wire bonding methods for semiconductor packaging have been replaced by direct attachment to the substrate after forming a bump on the chip. However, the height of the bump or ball is an important factor for defects during assembly. This paper proposes an algorithm to measure the height of the bumps or balls in semiconductor packaging with greater accuracy. The performance of the proposed algorithm is experimentally validated. Non-contact 3D measurements of a shiny round ball is quite difficult, and it is not easy to obtain accurate data. This paper thus proposes an optical method and technique to improve the measurement accuracy.

  • This paper describes the surface form measurement of a spherical smooth surface by using single shot off-axis Fizeau interferometry. The demodulated phase map is obtained and unwrapped to remove the $2\pi$ ambiguity. The unwrapped phase map is converted to height and the 3D surface height of the surface object is reconstructed. The results extracted from the single shot off-axis geometry are compared with the results extracted from four-frame phase shifting in-line interferometry, and the results are in excellent agreement.

  • In conventional photogrammetry, three-dimensional coordinates are obtained from two consecutive images of a stationary object photographed from two exposure stations, separated by a certain distance. However, it is impossible to photograph moving objects from two stations with one camera at the same time. Various methods to overcome this obstacle were devised e. g. taking the left and right scenes simultaneously with one camera using a beam splitter attached to the front, thus creating a stereo scene in one image. A beam splitter consists of two outer mirrors and two inner mirrors. This paper deals with research where the optical principles of the beam splitter were evaluated based on light path phenomena between the outer mirrors and the inner mirrors. A mathematical model of the geometric configuration was derived for the beam splitter. This allows us to design and control a beam splitter to obtain maximum scale and maximum base-height ratio by stepwise application of the mathematical model. The results show that the beam splitter is a very useful tool for stereophotography with one camera. The optimum geometric configurations ensuring maximum scale and base-height ratio are closely related to inner and outer reflector sizes, their inclination angles and the offsets between the outer mirrors.
