  • An electrical balance of plant(EBOP) of a 600kW molten carbonate fuelcell (MCFC) has to transit from grid-connected(GC) mode to grid-independent(GI) mode when a grid is in a fault conditions. A minimum transition time is limited by four cycle for a 600kW MCFC to ride through a grid fault. In this paper, we propose a control algorithm of a 600kW EBOP for a MCFC system. The EBOP has three operation modes, i.e., GC mode, GI mode, and grid-synchronized(GS) mode. The EBOP controls output currents in a GC mode and regulates output voltages in GI or GS mode. GS mode is defined as an interface between GC mode and GI mode to make a mode transition smooth, i.e., limitation of inrush currents, regulation of output voltages within ANSI standard. Simulations and experiments carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

  • The observed characteristics of magnetic oscillations in L-H transition and disruption are described. Two kinds of MHD magnetic probes are used in order to cover broadband frequency range from 1.3 kHz to 300 kHz in the H-mode. Depending on the probe's position and frequency, different characteristics are observed. Precursor like oscillation in L-H transition, and the difference between sawtooth and ELM are discussed. All disruptions during the current rising phase are related with m=2 or m=3 mode. Different disruption characteristics for different operation conditions could be found in the MHD probes.

  • The characteristics at the intermediate operation point of the turbopump-gas generator(TP-GG) coupled test were investigated by analytical method. The pump outlet pressure, gas generator mixture ratio, gas generator pressure, and temperature were examined considering risk minimization of test. The engine system shows different behavior from the TP-GG coupled test at the intermediate operation point since the combustion pressure feeds back to the flow rate in the lines. The advanced valve changes in the combustor line helps less risky mode transition.

  • This paper proposes a novel soft starting algorithm by using PWM inverter technique to control an amplitude of the motor starting current at a single-phase induction motor (SPIM). Traditional SPIM starting methods such as a Split-Phase, Capacitor-Start, Permanent-Split Capacitor (PSC), Capacitor-Start Capacitor-Run (CSCR), basically cannot control the magnitude of starting current due to the fixed system structures. Therefore, in this paper, a soft starting algorithm based on a proportional resonant (PR) control with a variable and constant frequency is proposed to reduce the inrush current and starting up time. In addition, a transition algorithm for operation modes is devised to generate a constant voltage and constant frequency (CVCF). The validity and effectiveness of the proposed soft starting method and transition algorithm are verified through experimental results.

  • In the microgrid, inverters for energy storage system are generally constructed in a parallel structure because of capacity expandability, convenience of system maintenance, and reliability improvement. Parallel inverters are required to provide stable voltage to the critical load in PCC and to accurately share the current between each inverter. Furthermore, when islanding occurs, the inverters should change its operating mode from grid-connected mode to stand-alone mode. However, during clearing time and control mode change, the conventional control method has a negative impact on the critical load, that is, severe fluctuating voltage. In this study, a parallel operation control method is proposed. This method provides seamless mode transfer for the entire transition period, including clearing time and control mode change, and has accurate current sharing between each inverter. The proposed control method is validated through simulation and experiment.

  • This paper proposes the improved transition scheme for a sensorless drive of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). In order to operate the IPMSM, the current controller can be used until 300 rpm for the initial operation. After that, the control method of IPMSM is changed to the speed controller for the sensorless control method. At that point, the rotor speed overshoot is generated due to the rapid change of the current reference for the speed controller. The proposed algorithm is able to reduce the overshoot of a rotor speed by compensating the estimated feedforward value to the speed controller. The feedforward value of the current reference is estimated by using a coordinate transformation and is approximated to the current reference after the transition of the control mode. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by experiments using an IPMSM drive system.

  • In this paper, a unified control strategy using the current space vector modulation (CSVM) technique is proposed and applied to a bidirectional three-phase DC/AC converter. The operation of the converter changes with the direction of the power flow. In the charging mode, it works as a buck type rectifier; and during the discharging mode, it operates as a boost type inverter, which makes it suitable as an interface between high voltage AC grids and low voltage energy storage devices. This topology has the following advantages: high conversion efficiency, high power factor at the grid side, tight control of the charging current and fast transition between the charging and discharging modes. The operating principle of the mode analysis, the gate signal generation, the general control strategy and the transition from a constant current (CC) to a constant voltage (CV) in the charging mode are discussed. The proposed control strategy has been validated by simulations and experimental results obtained with a 1kW laboratory prototype using supercapacitors as an energy storage device.

  • In this paper PU control scheme is presented. The proposed scheme has following features. The one is oft-starting method which is used for preventing to flow large current in motor phase winding when motor starts. The ther is the selection of the level of the over current. The first feature is implemented by increasing the PWM duty lowly, the second feature is implemented by limiting the magnitude of the phase current level by which the over heat f motor by copper losses and magnetic saturation decreases. By the analysis using FEM considering load condition, the peed of mode transition from PW to single pulse control is selected and confirmed by simulation that there is no ver current occurs during the mode transition. For the verification of proposed scheme, the simulation using MATLAB Simulink with considering non-linearity of inductance profile from FEM analysis is performed and the experiment with SRM drive system which has the DSP controller and single Phase SRM are peformed.

  • In this paper, we designed a reduced height waveguide(WG) to microstrip mode converter with a short transition length. The mode converter is composed of a mode converter using E-plane probe and a modified impedance transformer. The mode converter was designed using a probe shorted to top of a 50 ohm ridge WG. The modified impedance transformer was designed to connect the mode converter to the reduced height WG. For wide bandwidth operation, the coupling of the two parts was tuned. The structure of the mode converter was optimized for low loss and wide bandwidth, and the optimized mode converter was fabricated. The performance of the mode converter was extracted using the thru and line S-parameters for back-to-back connections, and the connector loss was calibrated. The mode converter has a right angle structure and short transition length, 7.2 mm. The mode converter shows excellent performances; the insertion loss of 0.12 dB at 15 GHz, and the return loss above 10 dB for the full Ku-band.
