The most important factor in the structural design of ships and offshore structures operating in arctic region is ice load, which results from ice-structure interaction during the ice collision process. The mechanical properties of ice related to strength and failure, however, show very complicated aspect varying with temperature, volume fraction of brine, grain size, strain rate and etc. So it is nearly impossible to establish a perfect material model of ice satisfying all the mechanical characteristics completely. Therefore, in general, ice collision analysis was carried out by relatively simple material models considering only specific aspects of mechanical characteristics of ice and it would be the most significant cause of inevitable errors in the analysis. Especially, it is well-known that the most distinctive mechanical property of ice is high dependency on strain rate. Ice shows brittle attribute in higher strain rate while it becomes ductile in lower strain rate range. In this study, the simulation method of ice collision to ship hull using the nonlinear dynamic FE analysis was dealt with. To consider the strain rate effects of ice during ice-structural interaction, strain rate dependent constitutive model in which yield stress and hardening behaviors vary with strain rate was adopted. To reduce the huge amount of computing time, the modeling range of ice and ship structure were restricted to the confined region of interest. Under the various scenario of ice-ship hull collision, the structural behavior of hull panels and failure modes of ice were examined by nonlinear FE analysis technique.

The implosion phenomena of pressure vessels operating in deep water under extremely high external pressure have been well known. The drastic energy release to ambient field in the form of pressure pulse is accompanied with catastrophic collapse of shell structure. Such a proximity shock wave could be a serious threat to the structural integrity of adjacent submerged body and several suspected accidents have been reported. In this study, basic research for the occurrence and development of shock wave due to implosion was carried out. The mechanism of pressure pulse generation and energy dissipation were investigated, and a simplified kinematic model to approximate the collapse modes of circular tubes which can be generated by external pressure and implosion was examined. Using the simplified kinematic model, the process of energy dissipation was formulated, and the magnitude of released pressure shock wave was estimated quantitatively. To investigate the validity of developed kinematic model and shock wave estimation process, the results from a nonlinear FE analysis code and collapse test carried out using pressure chamber were compared with the results from the developed kinematic model.
Components manufactured from composite materials are frequently subjected to superimposed mechanical and thermal loadings during their operating service. Both types of loadings may cause fracture and failure of composite structures. When composite cross-ply laminates of type [$0_m/90_n]_s$ are subjected to uni-axial tensile loading, different types of damage are set-up and developed such as matrix cracking: transverse and longitudinal cracks, delamination between disoriented layers and broken fibers. The development of these modes of damage can be detrimental for the stiffness of the laminates. From the experimental point of view, transverse cracking is known as the first mode of damage. In this regard, the objective of the present paper is to investigate the effect of transverse cracking in cross-ply laminate under thermo-mechanical degradation. A Finite Element (FE) simulation of damage evolution in composite crossply laminates of type [$0_m/90_n]_s$ subjected to uni-axial tensile loading is carried out. The effect of transverse cracking on the cross-ply laminate strength under thermo-mechanical degradation is investigated numerically. The results obtained by prediction of the numerical model developed in this investigation demonstrate the influence of the transverse cracking on the bearing capacity and resistance to damage as well as its effects on the variation of the mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion. The results obtained are in good agreement with those predicted by the Shear-lag analytical model as well as with the obtained experimental results available in the literature.

Magnetoelectric (ME) composite is composed of a piezoelectric material and a magnetostrictive material. Among various ME structures, 2-2 type layered ME composites are anticipated to be used as high-sensitivity magnetic field sensors and energy harvesting devices especially operating at its resonance modes. Rosen type piezoelectric transducer using piezoelectric material is known to amplify a small electrical input voltage to a large electrical output voltage. The output voltage of these Rosen type piezoelectric transducers can be further enhanced by modifying them into ME composite structures. Herein, we fabricated Rosen type ME composites by sandwiching Rosen type PMN-PZT single crystal between two Ni layers and studied their ME coupling. However, the voltage step-up ratio at the resonance frequency was found to be smaller than the value calculated with αME value. The ATILA FEA (Finite Elements Analysis) simulation results showed that the position of the nodal point was changed with the presence of a magnetostrictive layer. Thus, while designing a Rosen type ME composite with high performance in a resonant driving situation, it is necessary to optimize the position of the nodal point by optimizing the thickness or length of the magnetostrictive layer.

Reliability growth analysis was conducted for a guided weapons system. In the development phase, reliability management activities were continuously carried out by identifying failure modes and causes and analyzing faults found during the testing. The missile system consists of an all-up-round missile and a launcher, and the analysis was carried out according to the test results of each system. The test results for the all-up-round missile were obtained with discrete data, which were success and failure as a one-shot-device. The test results for the launcher were obtained with continuous data by operating the equipment continuously in the test. For each test result, the reliability growth model was applied to the Standard Gompertz model and the Crow-Extended model. The models were used to identify the growth analysis results of the test so far. It was also possible to predict the reliability growth results by assuming the future test results. The study results could be useful in achieving the desired reliability goal and in determining the number of tests. Then, the planned test will be confirmed and the growth analysis of the missile system will continuously be conducted.
The coal-fired power plant is operated by a combined operation method, which is operated by sliding pressure operation under low load and by fixed pressure operation under high load for improved efficiency. The combined operation is divided into two and three valve open modes. Each plant is operated by selecting the turbine control valve mode in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendation, but is not really operating at the optimal sliding pressure operation according to load range, also Load range of each plant is configured differently. The internal efficiency of the high-pressure turbines is reduced due to loss of the turbine valves and the plant efficiency is reduced. To solve these problems, In this paper, the optimum load range is selected through the analysis method of thermal performance by each load in order to improve the optimum variable pressure operation load range by turbine control valve mode.
The radar installed on an aircraft has various operating modes depending on tactical purposes, allowing for the configuration of search areas according to each mode's operational objectives. active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar emits search beams sequentially according to a predefined search beam grid within the designated search area specified by the pilot to detect targets within it. It is crucial that the radar can stably search the area designated by the pilot for target detection, even as the aircraft's attitude changes. This paper focuses on stabilizing the search pattern in the air-to-air operational mode of aircraft-mounted radar to ensure stable target detection during roll and pitch maneuvers of the aircraft. The paper demonstrates its performance by simulating aircraft maneuvers and targets in a system integration laboratory (SIL) test environment.
This study suggested a method of forecasting market-share of each mode after introducing new urban rail transit lines. The study reflected the observed market share of presently operating urban rail transit into forecasting process in order to improve accuracy in predicting market share of each modes. For more realistic representation of the forecasting model, we categorized O/D pairs according to attributes of trip distance, access time and number of transfers. The analysis results of traveler's mode choice behavior with observed data showed that the trip distances are longer, the share of urban rail tends to be higher, and that the number of transfers is fewer and the access times are lesser, the share of urban rail also tends to be higher. Then, incremental logit model was used in estimating mode choice probabilities for O/D pairs along with rail transit lines while utilizing observed market shares of each modes and differences in transit service level. As the next step, the market share of rail transit after introducing new rail transit lines was forecasted by using incremental logit model with the intial share values calculated the previous analysis step. It also reflected changes in level of service for automobile in highway due to changes in highway systems and changes in mode shares after introducing new lines of rail transit. It can be expected that the proposed method would more realistically duplicates phenomena of mode choice behavior for rail transit and that it would be more theoretically logical than the typical existing methods using SP data and incremental logit model or using addictive logit model in this country.
A new diagnostics of plasma electron temperature and plasma density is introduced with the observation of the light emission along the tube of external electrode fluorescent lamps. With two different methods operating an external electrode fluorescent lamp of outer diameter 4.0 mm and length 860 mm for the back-light source of 37-inch LCD-TVs, the lighting modes and the plasma properties are investigated. In the center balance operation, the light-emission propagates simultaneously from both sides of the high voltage electrodes to the center of the lamp, while in conventional operation the light-emission propagates from the one end of a high voltage to the other ground electrode. In the operation value of luminance $10,000{\sim}15,000cd/m^2$, the electron plasma thermal energy $(kT_e)$ is about $1.3{\sim}2.7eV$ with the electron density $(n_e)$ is about $(1.6{\sim}3.6){\times}10^{16}m^{-3}$.
