  • The purpose of this study is to explore the number and type of proverbs known by elementary school children and explain what variables might influence the proverbs' perception. From Seoul and Chonbuk areas, 632 forth, fifth, and sixth graders at elementary school participated. They completed an open-ended questionnaire asking them to list as many proverbs as they know and probing their experience in the use of proverbs with grandparents, parents, and peers. The results showed that the participants listed a total of 185 proverbs, at an average of six proverbs each, and that 63% were a concrete proverb consisting of only concrete and visible nouns. Children reported relatively different ratios of concrete/abstract/complex proverbs according to their grade. Sixth graders perceived more proverbs which included nouns than other graders. Multiple regression analysis revealed that children's grade and using proverbs with peers influenced their proverb perception. These results may suggest a possibility of relationship between figurative language and cognitive development related to thinking of late school-age children.

Also, 32 weekly menus were sent to analyze in this study. Results of this study showed that dietitians considered specially energy, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fats for recipients's health conditions and daily RDA. However, dietitians wanted more information about right menu plan manuals for psychiatric patients. Analysis of weekly menus showed that milk and milk products were th most insufficient serving food group in these institutions. • Purpose: This descriptive study was conducted to identify the level of knowledge of stroke symptoms and risk factors among older adults. Methods: A total of 200 older adults over 65 years of age were conveniently recruited from out patient departments of two hospitals and a health care center from October to November 2008. The level of knowledge was assessed using both open-ended questions and a structured questionnaire based on semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed by t-tests and ANOVA using the SPSS program. Results: 52.5% of the sample had hypertension and 30% had diabetes. The mean knowledge scores for symptoms and risk factors were $8.4{\pm}3.1$ (out of 15) and $9.5{\pm}3.9$ (out of 16), respectively. The older adults who had lower education, lower family income, and who lived in rural areas were more likely to have less knowledge of stroke symptom and risk factors (p < .05). There was no significant knowledge difference between the older adults who had at least one risk factor and those who had no risk factor for stroke. Conclusions: Educational intervention should be focused on informing older adults who are at risk for stroke about the early symptoms and management of risk factors, especially those who have low education and low social status.

  • This study was conducted to determine the appropriateness of the indicators and items on teacher evaluations for professional development and to provide insight for their improvement. To accomplish this, the perception of the importance and performance frequency of 318 nutrition teachers regarding their roles inherent in the indicators and items were evaluated through a survey questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired t-test. In addition, the reflective analysis and constant comparison method were employed to analyze the responses to the open-ended questions asking problems in the indicators and items. The results revealed that the mean scores for the importance and performance frequency of most indicators and items were over four points, which implies that most indicators and items are appropriate for evaluating the job tasks of nutrition teachers. However, it was suggested that a few items be revised or removed for their improvement and appropriateness. This study concluded that nutrition teachers should have more chances to provide nutrition education for students to enable them to perform as teachers and not simply dietitians.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine theoretical underpinnings of housing adjustment as applied to residents of Korean folk housing. On random and voluntary base, 66 households of the Andong Haboe folk village were asked to participate in the present study for a self-administrated questionnaire survey as well as open-ended face-to-face interviews. Some valuable results were obtained as follows. In spite of the legal barrier to change in physical conditions of housing, first, a huge amount of adjustment actually took place in the rural folk village. Satisfying basic amenity or shelter needs turned out to be the basic role of adjustment. Second, the number of adjustment works previously done was not effective anyhow in predicting the level of housing satisfaction. Speare's (1974) satisfaction theory of housing adjustment was largely supported by the present study. Highly dissatisfied residents with their housing were more likely to expect adjustment works of their own. Additionally, age turned out to be the most powerful predictor of housing adjustment. Finally, housing satisfaction was positively correlated with community attachment (Kendall's $\tau$ =.35 ; p 〈 .001). Residents satisfied with their house were more likely to be proud of being a member of community. Overall, though, community attachment was not related anyhow to the willingness of housing adjustment.
